February 13th already? Goodness, a year ago I was nerdingbout over LoZ: Majora's Mask!
But in honor of MH4U turning 1, I want to know...
How did you get into the series? What are your favorite aspects of it? Favorite monster? If you own 4U, are you still enjoying it and why? C'mon, let's celebrate this milestone!

Mine and Netherweave's roommate back in Austin, Texas introduced us to the series with his imported copy of one of the Monster Hunter games for his Wii. C: Netherweave was taken with it, though watching him play it admittedly put me to sleep before we got our hands on our first copies of MH3U when it was released. ; v ;
Overall, I like the battle aspects of it and the teamwork when you and some friends are at the Gathering Hall. Playing with friends is a really important feature for me in a game like Monster Hunter, so being able to share the experience with friends, namely Netherweave, is what kept me playing it at the time. Otherwise I would have gotten frustrated and left it alone for a while.
When MH4U came out, I was so super excited about playing with the Insect Glaive. I got to use it in the demo that Nintendo distributed to a handful of email addresses. It's my go-to weapon these days, and now I'm currently attempting to master the Charge Blade. I'm actually really happy with the Charge Blade now that I know how to actually... well... charge it.
My favourite monster, however... is one that isn't even in the states yet. I really like Tamamitsune because it's so pretty and cute. ; v ; As for ones that I've fought against: Barioth! ò A ó! Barioth fights were so fun, and I'm looking forward to them in X if we get a western release. ; v ;
Lately, I've taken a break from Monster Hunter in order to hunt Shinies on my Pokémon Omega Ruby. ; v ; But I might pick it up again to see about getting some Esurient Mail and some other armour collections I have yet to complete. Curse that Desire Metre.

I think I got it because you (Coppah) said I should try it, then it turned out a lot of my forum buddies here liked it as well. I can't really remember to be honest.
My experience is is not really unique: I picked it up, liked it, and started researching like mad. I'm around 200 hours in, I'll probably eclipse 400+ by the end of the month. My experience is significantly marred by the fact I am forced to play solo since I don't have Internet at my house - it's slowly leaving a bad taste in my mouth, sadly.
I'll probably import MHX as well. If I do, I might try to rig together a Let's Play for the forum or give you guys in depth looks at it, if you wanted. I kind of like the challenge of getting the translation patch flashed on it, and getting home brew stuff on my 3ds because I'm a huge NEEEEEERD.

I learned about Monster Hunter a long while back. But none of my friends back then showed interest in playing it, so I never picked it up until a few years ago when a youtuber named Projared released a comprehensive, enjoyable and detailled guide on how to play mh3u. After that I decided to give the game a chance, regardless of my friends playing it.
I fell in love with the series instantly, but I grew frustrated by the lack of mobility and those god damn underwater missions. Despite the sea featuring the Lagiacrus, one of my favourite beasts out there, I didn't enjoy it as much as I could.
Now mh4u improved on all my gripes with the last game and made me fall in love with the series all over again! Everything improved and I can't think of one moment I didn't enjoy about it, despite only playing singleplayer due to no friends playing the games still. Well, except for the time I had to hunt the Rathalos like 20 times for that rare drop.
It's hard picking my favourite monster, but I'll have to go for the Najarala, because it's an intimidating giant snek and I love sneks. He's closely followed by the Zamtrios and Lagaiacrus.
Though I have to admit I am also strangely drawn to the Congalala. Something about a giant pink babboon farting and burping all over my hunter during combat endears me. Don't ask me why.

I remember one of my brothers whom I shall call Blondie, Dad, Mum and I saw an ad about Monster Hunter: Tri on T.V one night, and because our father took interest, Blondie went and got it. So Mum and Dad played a little of the Arena, while Blondie and I played through the game's story. Because I didn't find a weapon I was particularly good with, I was stuck on... I think Rathian? I don't know. But soon, the 3ds came out, and we both got one, and Blondie got his beloved WiiU. And look what else came out? Monster Hunter: U. So yeah, we got that, I was still a little loss, you know. But, seeing the new few weapons, I actually got decent with one: The Bow,
Fast-forwarding time, Monster Hunter: 4U came out, but, I didn't get it when it got out. I was a little salty with games because Etrian Odyssey got corrupted because my 3ds wouldn't keep the game in the slot.
But soon, Blondie gave me his old one, getting the 'New' 3ds. So, we went out and got the new game, where more frustration than I have every experienced in my life happened, because the new monsters are such a pain in the neck. Plus I got pretty good at Gunlance~
My favourite aspect? Not sure if it entirely counts, but the jump/mount feature. It's so fun when, say, a Rathalos, knocking it to the ground. Because honestly, I never knocked over a monster with my bow unless I got really lucky while shooting it while it was leaving, but that's it. Plus, mounting things like Gog is awesome~!
Favourite monster, 'ey? I have a few... To list some, I'd say Kut-ku, Chameleos, Gogmazios, Golden Rathian, (Stygien) Zinogre, Jehn Mohran, Miralis and Gigginox. At least Gigginox should've stayed, I say. He was a cool monster.
I'm still enjoying it, though I can't play it for like 2+ hours straight without breaks. My patience with the game only goes so far you see. I don't like all of the insta-kills nor fighting giant snakes. The Giant Snake boss could just go burn in a fire for all I care.

Well, I'm glad I don't have to provide too much context on my experiences with Monster Hunter. Jay usually ends up including my experiences in her own post, as well.
But, for a little bit of depth on my side, I think I was first intrigued by MHTri from our roommate. The strong itch for battling larger-than-life creatures from my Shadow of the Colossus days were what greatly attracted me to the game series.
And because MH3U was a month away from release, I decided to get it for myself day one on the 3DS. Got on the 3DS because we didn't exclusively own a WiiU, and it would occupy my time on bus rides to work. So a lot of my learning and playing were during hour-long commutes. Fun as it was, it would only be a few short weeks before Jay wanted to play the game, as well. And having some sense of multi-player into the mix really helped to lengthen the lifetime of the game after I've achieved G-rank.
Greatly anticipating MH4U, I noticed that mounting was going to be enjoyable (again, it was one step closer to SotC.) By the time MH4U released, we were eagerly grinding through all the content and quickly recruiting other friends into playing the game with us. Now that MH4U had multiplayer on the handheld, we've been able to experience quite a bit through the online content.
Now patiently anticipating the release of MHX (or MHXU) to the states, I'm quite exciting to utilise all the new support items. As well as experimenting with the different hunting arts to find which one really flows well with my style of hunting.

Goodness, look at all of these extensive histories & experiences! I'm having a blast reading them.
To answer my own questions, my first experience of MH was the public 4U demo on the e-shop. I found the experience infuriating and the camera clunky.
But a few months later I had store credit from an employee error, so I got the game since it was a no-pay risk, and I learned to love it! Finding the circle pro function for the camera helped.
Now I'm hooked. I even picked up 3U, although I enjoy & play 4U way more.
I love mounting and the vertical aspects of 4U, but my favorite aspect overall is the stories. I find 3&4's storylines and characters endearing.
Which leads me to my favorite golden monsters, Seregios & Shagaru Magala! Soooo shiny.
