Throughout the series there have been a number of incredible monsters that have been both introduced and recurring through each game. And with new monsters being introduced with every new iteration, there are always bound to be favorites. Whether it be through their design, the battle arena, or the manner in how they move.
What monster, or list of monsters, have you most enjoyed hunting, and why?
What monster, or list of monsters, have you most enjoyed hunting, and why?
Noticed there were a number of people listing their favorite monsters. And because my own list could encompass its own thread, I decided to share the space for fellow hunting stories about your favorite list of monsters.
My list has no particular order, simply which ones come to mind, and are most remembered.
1) Nargacuga
Introduced in the Monster Hunter Tri series, this monster became a new favorite among Japanese players, and it quickly become one of mine. Most of my hunting style settled strongly around dodging and position, and once I had been introduced to the fast movement of this monster, as well as the armor set that easily boosted dodge mechanics. I knew it would be the standard monster that I would judge others in how slow their attacks were.
It also helped that Nargacuga's design is sleek and mysterious. The armor set was also not half bad and shared the same "ninja" style presence as the monster. While somewhat disappointed Narga was not in MH4U, I was glad to know the armor set could still be crafted through trade materials. And I'm obviously very glad to know Narga made its comeback in MHX (and hopefully MHXU).
2) Deviljho
One of the monsters that separates the novice hunter from the pros, and was expressed so when this giant behemoth appears out of nowhere in your Low Rank quests in MH3/U. Deviljho exudes the intimidating feature of all teeth and muscle, while hulking its way around the map wherever it pleased. While the design was not too interesting, and its online moniker of looking like an "angry pickle" in the States. I think my love for the big pickle was after crafting the armor set that greatly bolstered my Attack, and even had pretty decent defense to boot.
Significantly slower than Nargacuga and other smaller monsters, a number of bouts will quickly reveal the obvious telegraphed attacks Jho has to offer. I also like the fact that Deviljho has the staple strategy of dropping status-afflicted meats on the ground for it to devour. Sleep-meats and large bombs to the face is the tried and true technique, and not many monsters require that hunters bring these nifty tricks to the table.
3) Brachydios
Aside from Deviljho, Brachydios was introduced in late MH3U and boasting the new status ailment Slime, or Blast for MH4U. Which brought to the table a rather "broken" method of cutting and breaking parts off monsters. Honestly the design of this monster was not too great in my opinion, but the battle of dancing around slime puddles while Brachy flew across the field like superman to ground pound a random hunter was always fun!
The armor sets were nothing great to write home about either. Instead, it was the weapons that were coveting for the Slime/Blast status. A great option for those seeking part-breaking specific items, and the weapons always came with decent attack, as well.
And this is just the short list.

My favorite at the moment is probably Deviljho.
I remember encountering him for the first time as an unstable monster in one of the 7 star caravan quests in ancestral steppe, and I just sort of stared at him briefly before running away like a scared little kid. I didn't see much of him after that, and only just recently (last week I think?) killed my first one (the frenzied jho quest).
It gave me such an amazing charge to fight it - in my mind I had built it up to being some kind of earth shatteringly strong force, so to actually be taking it down made me fall in love with the game again.
I must really hate myself because my number two is Yian Garuga.
Garuga was one of those times where I went in with too much confidence in my skills, and the purple death metal dragon bird SWIFTLY brought me down from the heavens. After learning that it can rage out basically whenever it wants, I began to respect it more, and a part of me really loves to hunt it. I can't go on autopilot and not pay attention - I have to work for my carves, and I love that. Yian is extremely frustrating and hits like a God damn truck, but its design is pretty good and it's cry is...something else. SCCCRRRRAAAAAWWWW!!
I also like Barioth, Teostra, and Lunastra. It's the flying kitty wyverns :B! Haven't fought em yet, but look forward to it.
Tamamitsune is also alright I guess. lulz

While I am quite fond of the Magalas and Seregios...
I must admit, Barioth has a special spot in my heart alongside them. I've always had a fondness for things catlike, so the saber toothed wyvern is dear to me. Plus his fight is pretty darn fun!

My favourite monsters are Barioth, Barchydios, Grand Chameleos, Teostra, Zinogre, and Kirin. @ v @
They're all relatively fun fights, in my opinion. ; v ; And fun fights are usually what win me over. :'D Plus, some of the armour sets from these ones are some of my mains from 3U and 4U. I'll always love my S. Barioth set and my Mizuha sets. ; v ;

My first true challenge, Qurupeco. Tri was my first MH game, and Quru really showed me what the game had in store, and its quirky design has inspired me to this day. I mean look at it, it's a chartreuse duck pterosaur with a trumpet face and fan tail, complete with probably the most creative use of Fire in the entire franchise (sorry Glavenus), and they pulled it off flawlessly! For the most part that is. It still suffers from the repetetive moveset of birdwyvernitis. Charge, peck, peck, spit, charge. But when the fight gets good, it gets good. Explosions, colors, buffs, and even the chance of getting a monster dropped on your head. Whatcha gonna do buddy? Use a sonic bomb to flinch the duck out of her song, or go full Brooklyn on that juicy exposed weak point? And the feeling of progress when all those parts you bounced off of when you first faced off no longer being an issue with the weapon you got after so many hunts, against your first true monster. It's perfect, all of it. To the wyvern that showed me that any design can be pulled off it feels just right. May you find your way into the mainstream another day, Qurupeco.
Or Tzitzi because he's just a chill hunting partner. Always hate having to bash his photophores in. Way better than Gypceros, and slightly above Gobul.
