So I've been tossing around the idea of possibly importing Monster Hunter X. I'm giving my pokemon Y themed 3ds xl to one of my nephews (when asked if he wanted to watch pokemon on Netflix, he responded "Yes, but the real one! I want real Pikachu!", which is adorable since he's only 4) and picking up a new 3ds.
I'm mildly hesitant to import it because of the insanely stellar success the game has had in Japan - it's sold over 3 million units, I think? - could lead to a western release; however, it seems more like a really big expansion pack and lacks G rank. However, if the west does get it, it would probably be in a year or so or MHXG/MH4U.
I am also aware that I'd need to get the translation patch that's out for it - I'm no stranger to modding and homebrewing my consoles and electronics, I've been doing it for years. I even made a small post of what I did to my Xbox 360 here on RPR a few years ago.
So what do you guys think?

That's entirely your choice, and it's definitely one way of staying ahead the curve by knowing all the gameplay ahead of the others.
Personally, I have no interest in trying to import MHX for the whole reason that I would have to buy a JP-exclusive 3DS to play a JP-exclusive game. Import all the patches and connecting to the JP servers for multiplayer.
With the success that MH3U and 4U have in the states, alongside the good sales happening in JP with MHX, it just seems like a given that a MHXU-equivalent would come to the states (eventually). They usually end up packing more content within these international releases to make up for the wait time necessary. And usually are superior to the initial release.
I think 4U still has a little bit of life within it to sustain western fans just a little longer.

I'm not terribly knowledgeable about these things, but a lot of people in the FB group I'm in have done it and seem to be enjoying it. So if you can do it, go for it. If MHXG/U is made & released, you'll probably still have the moolah to buy it if you want!
I'll probably do it to be honest. I mean, I'm a guy who imports car parts from Japan (get me on a rant about old Toyota or Datsuns, or even the box of stuff you can't get in America that I just have laying around in my room like it's no big deal) on the regular and I love breaking warranties.
Alternatively, I may just buy all the western MH titles to get a true feel for the series. When I commit to a series, I commit to a series. Heard that plesioth hip check was killer

MH2 or MHTri, I believe, the best Plesy hip checks.
GUYS. MHX IS TO BE MONSTER HUNTER GENERATIONS. WE'RE GETTING IT!
This is going to be a good year for 3ds releases: Pokémon Sun and Moon, along with mhx, plus some other good stuff probably in the pipeline. I wonder if it'll have a G rank, not that it matters much to me. I might have to save up and get a new 3ds for it.
