Tl;Dr can't beat gold rath...tips and halp? R I a scrublord? Can beat toaster lion but not this?

I don't know what it is, but I've hit a total wall at the gold rathian quest, Ring of the Golden Lune. Out of the six or seven times I've done, I managed to break it's head and sub quest out once, and the longest I've lasted with running around is 25mins. I mean, I get it: G. Rathian is essentially a larger pink rathian that can bounce attacks on her head area w/o minds eye or a gs charge, but I think I've reached the point where I can't do it by myself. I'm not that bad of a hunter, its just... Like... I can't do it by myself anymore. My equipment load out gives me 412def and Razor sharp, HG earplugs, and two other things, with the seregios gs (864 dmg). It's a basic yian garuga s set with some tweaks.

From what I can tell, the gathering hall monsters have around twice the health and hit about twice as hard as offline monsters. Kushala? Finally beat it. Not very pretty but I have its moves down, and might switch to my poison sns for it specifically. Teostra? Man, Toaster is super fun. I beat the guild quest version of it before the Caravan version, so it was cake offline. I even took on offline silver rathalos w/o carting, and barely got hit (granted I was totally in the zone at the time).

Should I just shelf the game for a while to cool off? I can't even tell what I'm doing wrong. Or do I just chug down a helping of Git Gud Scrub? This is just really wearing me down. *Eats Doritos and mountain dew with teostra.*
It's actually been a while since I've fought Gold Rathian... Um... Well you're not wrong that it's pretty much a slightly tougher Pink Rathian variant. A team can bring down G. Rath fairly easy, but a solo run definitely requires some preparation.

If you don't already have them unlocked, I would recommend setting up a steam bomb for poison, and the occasional fire status. Otherwise, 400+ defense sounds pretty good to survive a couple direct hits from her bulk or her fire breath. If you find that you're having more problems with her fire, I would try building an armor set more geared toward fire resistance (even perhaps eating for additional fire resist). And vice versa, for having problems dodging that pesky tail of hers.

She's definitely rather tricky if you're not familiar with her movements. And sometimes the game space can be a hindrance when dodging or blocking. But it's always important, especially for these tougher monsters, to time your attacks and knowing more to block or dodge before striking. Priority needs to focus on dodging and position before you can grow more confident in attacking.

That's about the basic inkling of advice I can provide without knowing more details about your build, resistances, attack patterns, etc. The best thing is to have patience and have fun during the hunt! And I wish you the best of luck on your future hunts!
I ran with a Pink Rathian armour set decorated with Null Poison jewels when we farmed Gold Ratian and most of Silver Rathalos. Also, thunder / electric weapons that can afflict some paralyse effects might also be good. I used the Tigerstripe Zammy Insect Glaive most of the time. I don't know what monster in MH4U gives mats for water weaponry off the top of my head, though. But if you can, I'd suggest that as well.

Also, Steam Bombs, Antidotes, Flash Bombs. So satusfying when you bomb them out of the air with a Flash.
I will say, the advice the others gave are pretty good~ Though, 412 sounds pretty low to me (Might be biased because I use Gunlance and whatnot and because I fight goddamn giant snakes and oil dragons, but whatever). Have you maxed out your Armour as much as you can? Perhaps a little more Defense could keep you in longer? Do you foght with cats? If so, what Forte do you have them with? Skills and stuff? (Just saying, a 3-Heal 2-Armour works for me, but again, might be Gunlance/Bow bias) I understand I'm terrible with the skill side of things, since I'm more of a 'Slash at it till it dies' kinda dragon, but these small things could be the key to your answer, friend~!
@Netherweave, Grand Poobah of the Cosmos:
I think my greatest weakness is mostly just my mindset. In reality, I've been tanking quests meant for 2-4 players relatively well, and I've overcome all the walls I've come against in time. My playstyle tends to change on my stamina: hyper offensive when I'm in a good mood and don't care too much if I tank a hit or two. Then, as I get worn down, it begins to slide into a more conservative proper greatsword ethos - IE, Circle your foe relentlessly, get in there when you can, and don't pop off lvl3 charges without an opening. If I get scared or run low on healing items, I tend to go into circle the enemy but stay very far away mode: they don't damage me, and I don't damage them. I'm going to temper myself a bit today when I play again and keep a level head. I appreciate the insight you gave, and I'll keep it mind c:

@FreeJayFly, Silent NinJae of the Mist:
I totally spaced out gemming in poison immunity. My set is HG earplugs, quick sheath, critical draw, and razor sharp but I have a nargacuga mixed set w/evasion +1 and 8 open spots I might try today. Might also farm Toaster a bit to get my confidence up, then see what I can do with the gems and sets I have. You know, I have a ton of flash bombs but never have good luck with them :v! Also have to farm up some max/ancient pots and nutrients. I learned real fast that I can't take on guild hall stuff with gimp ed health. Thanks for the reminders, I get tunnel vision really easily.

@SINDragon, Pro Gogmazios Wrangler:
Well, 400def is good for what I have unlocked, which is rare 6 and some rare 7 stuff. The best I could do is probably a kushala/silver rathalos set in terms of defense. My palico set up is 3 healing 2 fighting, with my main cat and a fighter deployed. I'll probably switch it up to a healing cat deployed with my main. For greatsword, it is semi skill dependent - like, you need critical draw and sharpness +1 or razor sharp, and ideally focus (which I don't have). Quick sheath is also useful. The biggest pain in the rear right now is that I'm creeping up to the point where I need better Def and atk, but I've maxed my armor out for my current rank, I can't access the monsters I need for upgrading, and all that fun stuff. I mean, I COULD farm 6* Caravan quests for heavy armor spheres but its like a 8% chance per quest and I'm about to get to G rank anyway, you know what I mean? Thanks for a glimpse into your gogmazios slaughtering, I'll get the chance to spice him up myself eventually ;).
