2012
Earth is struck by a massive solar flare. The EMP given off by the solar flare destroys the aging global power grid, causing the Global Blackout Event. The armies of the world immediately collaborate through the use of experimental non-electric means of communication. Martial law is temporarily established to keep order. Oil companies, producing fuel for generators to power essential structures, start buying up smaller oil businesses to better organize the vast wealth contained within the oil market. Reconstruction on the power grid begins very promptly, with the help of major healthcare providers and smaller civilian businesses.
2014
Several dozen "spring-companies" appear world wide; these corporate enterprises no longer specialize in particular areas of business, but vary widely in their services and specialties as a result of either premeditated or random buying of smaller companies.
2014-2025
The Unity Renaissance. With the entire world having to pull together to rebuild, the world undergoes a revitalization of common sense and decency. Major technological advances are made during this time as many scientists and researchers work on humanitarian projects. Several mega-corporations slowly phase out national governments and establish their own borders. The two biggest of these companies are Kalamity, covering the North American continent, and EuroMonchy, covering Europe and parts of the Middle East and North Africa. Though previously a secret project, the publicizing of the corporate world is met with some mixed feelings, though slowly becomes a more casual - and even better way of life. With super-expansive corporate trade now possible, areas of poverty experience unparalleled wealth, and areas of wealth achieve much better balance between the rich and the poor. Smart trading balances imports and exports closer together than they've ever been. Major mega-corporations establish armed forces of specialized battalions for all purpose warfare, though no true army is mobilized.
2026
A third party attack on EuroMonchy headquarters is taken as an act of war and blamed on Kalamity. Sensing an attack coming, Kalamity mobilizes and deploys troops in preparation. Alan Turco: a Kalamity assassin, is captured on a mission but rescued by a comrade later. Alan is debriefed upon his return and his contract is terminated. Alan, for his own reasons, starts spreading word about taking down the very corporations that were providing for the people. Word spreads quickly through subtle channels, and the Opera Coalition is formed of roughly 60,000 anarchists, former employees, and soldiers of the old world of all species. -

Technology (as of 2026)
Transportation
See morePersonal transportation is much easier to come by. Megacorporations have different styles and parts for their vehicles, but the common fuel source of hydroelectric engines mastered over the Unity Renaissance provides clean, efficient travel without sacrificing performance. The lowered price of the vehicles and the almost total lack of the need to buy fuel means that single and double seated vehicles are the most common because of the size of the engine. Covered motorbikes (think Tron, but less sleek) have become rapidly popular, as have narrow, two passenger cars. Mass transit, such as trains and planes, have remained intact, with trains taking a vast leap in importance after the Blackout Crisis.
Weaponry
See moreWeaponry has not shifted too much farther than "guns shoot bullets". However, the ease of use for weaponry has become paramount, to make training quicker and achieve greater results. From pistols with wrist lockers to folding, carbon-fiber rifles, weapons are easier to use than ever. Bladed weapons have made a comeback as well. Laser-refined, titanium katana that use a mechanism similar to police batons to allow for easy storage and quick drawing. Several specialty weapons have been created over time by different species, though the humans have made the greatest technological advances.
Laser and plasma weaponry are very experimental, and are two big for even the Jek to wield. Instead, they are mounted on mechs mainly, and sometimes tanks. Thanks to the Renaissance, several weapons designers came up with rather creative weapons, including many intended for nonlethal purposes of varying usefulness. Body armor has become much more effective. Ceramic, overlapping scales over kevlar is common place among shocktroopers, often making careful, tactical trapping and sniper fire the deciding factor in battles.
Communication
See moreAdvances in communication have made hands free HUDs a reality. Small and inconspicuous, head-mounted devices that present a screen that tracks eye movement are commonplace. Thanks to such massive upgrades, however, older technology is very difficult to track by current conventional means. -
Weapons
GUNS
Many manufacturers of weaponry were bought and called upon to make standardized guns for corporate security and later military forces.
Kalamity Munitions and Ordinance
Kalamity weapons excel at durability and versatility. They are simple, tough, and often times parts from similar Kalamity weapons are interchangeable to easily adapt to different scenarios.
