Rory and Rose head to the police station to see what they can learn about the girl who was ridden.
Rory walked through the aisles of the store.
White board… check

Files, tabs, multi-colored stickers, blah blah blah. Check, check and check. Ok now that the shopping cart was full, and everything was checked off the list but the last item it was time to head over to the print section and have the plotter print out a nice big map of the area.
Well this should be everything. Now to head back home and set up their living room into an organized place for doing a review of whatever Rose and the others feed into the product.

Rose showed up for work her usual perky self. Outwardly, that is. She smiled at the appropriate times and made the proper sounds in response to polite queries about her well being. All that while she was wondering how to convince the detectives who had been assigned the case involving the ridden girl to let her see the file and evidence. Rose knew the guys who had been given the case. Neither would be interested in helping her with a favor. She shrugged. Well, she thought, I just won't ask then. She had arrived at work early enough that Price wasn't in yet. Or at least, he was not at his desk.
Taking advantage of her solitude, she typed quickly, pulling up the case file on her computer. Not much else had been added since she had been told to hand over the case to the detectives. Apparently, they weren't doing too well with their investigation, she mused smugly. She quickly pressed the print button on the file anyway. Then she did a search for the drugs. Rashid had asked her to find out if any new busts had been made or if the cops knew of any dens near the damage and damned if she wouldn't deliver. So engrossed in her work was she that she didn't notice the presence behind her until a voice that was much too close spoke low in her ear and in a conversational tone asked curiously why a homicide detective was looking up crack houses.
Rose gave a small yelp and jumped 3 feet in the air. She hurriedly closed the window as he strolled around her desk and took his seat. "Oh, Jesus, Price! Why do you insist on sneaking up on me? When did you come in?" She tried to make her voice match his casual tone; instead she sounded squeaky and panicked.

”I was swapping the donuts for a tray of fresh fruit in the break room. I’m pretty sure they put crack in the powder so I sent some down to the lab for testing.” he said conversationally so that she wouldn’t be able to tell if he was serious or not. ”I didn’t just sneak in, you were staring so hard at that computer screen that Bigfoot could have snuck up on you. So what’s going on O’Keefe?”
Things had been a little odd between them ever since the incident with the assailants in the alley. Or he should say assailant because he could have sworn there were two but only one body was there when reinforcements arrived. The whole thing had bothered him, if there had really only been one guy, how had she gotten blood all over her face from the bullets into the one he shot? There were a lot of unanswered questions but every time he asked, she’d start deflecting just like she was doing now by asking him questions in return instead of answering his.

Rose glared at him. "That's you?? I can't survive on that...that stuff!" Her voice dropped to a whisper as she added, "Besides, the entire precinct will use you for target practice if they find out you're the one who keeps forcing healthy shit on us." While she babbled on about sugary sweets vs healthy foods, she cast around in her mind for an explanation that sounded at least somewhat plausible. Rose wasn't blind to the tension that came off him in waves every time she avoided a question. In the end, she opted for the truth. A version of it, anyway.
"As for what I was doing when you so rudely peeked over my shoulder", she paused to glare at him but he stared back, unabashed. Sighing, she continued, "I can't get that girl from the other day off my mind. I know, don't say it. We handed the case off, it's not ours and we have-", she motioned vaguely, referring to the cases they both knew they should be working on. "But still, I can't help it. She's so young! I figured for sure that she was on a really bad trip so I just thought I'd look up what might be near where we scooped her up." Rose shrugged, she knew it sounded stupid. She braced herself for his response, certain he'd tell her to leave it and get back to work on what actually mattered.

Price set his Area 51 coffee cup that Alicia had bought for his birthday a few years prior, it had a chip in it but he loved it so much he couldn't throw it away. Her excuse was flimsy, but it didn't so much bother him what she was lying about but that she was lying to him. They were supposed to be partners and she was better than some of the ones he'd had before, plus her weird mannerisms were growing on him.
”O'Keefe, I know what you're up,” he said standing up to go back and lean on her desk. ”I think sometimes you forget that I've been a detective longer than you have. We picked that girl up by the community center where you volunteer. I get it, you're worried about the neighborhood and there was definitely something off about that girl. Call it instinct or what have you but that didn't seem like a normal druggie.” Price thought about it for a moment before speaking again. ”You know what, our Rabid Killer case has gone cold. Don't look at me like that, Werewolf Killer is overused, what else was I going to call him? Anyway, he hasn't ripped into a body ever since they drug that cut up one out of the bay. Why don't we take a break today and see if these guys missed any more of that drug coming in? It's possible the beat cops have busted people with it and didn't put it in the computer right. Hell, I'll even ask Wayne in evidence about his prized Shih Tzu while you go in and look around for other samples. You know how that man can talk about that damn dog. Then we can can drop some pins in map see how much in circulating near where you volunteer. Would that make you feel better?” It would also give him a chance to look into the drug too, he had a weird feeling about the girl and his hunches were rarely wrong when they came to him about things like that. If only he could prove them half the time.

Rose worked her jaw as she listened to Price say pretty much exactly what she wanted to hear. That is what made her so suspicious, of course. He was right, however, about there being no leads on the "Rabid Killer", as he'd dubbed him. They did have other cases that weren't nearly as cold though. He could have suggested working one of them.
A thought came to her then and her clouded eyes cleared a bit. Was this the wolf blood in him, sensing something off and struggling to figure it out? She suddenly tapped the desk as if coming to some sort of final decision and quickly stood. "Well, let's see if we can unravel some of the mystery surrounding this mess. First stop, evidence room. And seriously, Price, thanks." Rose flashed him a genuine smile.

He grinned at his partner and snatched his coffee cup back up motioning her to follow him. Maybe if he helped her with this thing so she could rest easy about the community center being away from drugs she'd open up to him a little more. It was a long shot but worth talking to a guy about the breeding habits of a mop for a half an hour.
Wayne was pushing around some papers when he got to the basement and Price casually strolled over.
“Mornin’ Detective Price, what can I do for you?” the veteran officer grinned over at him.
”Are you busy? I just stopped by to ask a few questions. You see, Alicia wants to get Lacy and dog and she's been looking at beagles, what do you think of them?” Price said as he leaned against the wall with his coffee in a way that it would slightly block the man's view.
“What? Those nasty yodlers? What you need is a nice small dog, but not too small that has the personality….”
Price settled in, he knew he'd be there for awhile.

Discreetly observing Price and Wayne as they talked about the "correct" breed Alicia should get made Rose chuckle. Price was clearly dying to be anywhere else but he was doing this, for her. Well, maybe also for his own curiosity but Rose decided to ignore the little annoying voice in her head telling her that Price didn't care about her.
With a start, she realized that she needed to stop daydreaming and move her ass if she was going to do her share. Rose slid by them, appreciating how well Price had covered her arrival. She slowly closed the door behind her and breathed a small sigh of relief. Rubbing her hands together, Rose surveyed the evidence room and wondered how the hell she was going to find anything. She spotted a computer and gave a triumphant smile, sure that it would tell her exactly where to locate the files she wanted. Tapping the keyboard brought up a password screen. She cursed under her breath and kept searching for some sort of organizational system. Finally she started opening random boxes and briefly scan in the contents list of each one before carefully placing it back. This continued for several boxes and she was getting nowhere. Then she heard the conversation begin wrapping up and knew she was out of time.
Spewing forth every curse word she knew and inventing several more on the spot, Rose placed the lid back on the box she was holding and set it down where it belonged. Then she opened the door and slid out. Wayne's back was turned away from the door now. The door shut with a faint click and he turned as if he heard a sound. She made as if she had just arrived behind him (well, in a way, she had done just that) and said, "Wayne, I heard you're the guy to talk to about dogs. My neighbor has this dog that won't stop doing his business in my yard! I'm getting so annoyed. Any tips to keep him out?" Wayne was only too delighted to offer his wisdom on the matter and immediately began offering a myriad of solutions. Behind him, Price raised an eyebrow in silent query. Rose gave a tiny, imperceptible shake of her head to let him she had come up empty. Price punched Wayne on the arm in that way guys do and told him thanks for his help. Meanwhile, Rose wondered how long she'd have to stand there and listen to him describe exactly where to hide the squirt guns in preparation for the next time her next door neighbor's imaginary dog tried to come poop on her lawn.

Price was about dogged out by the time he saw O’Keefe sneak by out of the corner of his eye. She shook her head like she hadn’t found much of anything so he said detached himself from Wayne and headed back to their office.
”So you didn’t find anything?” Price asked when his partner finally escaped from the dog guru. ”Well, let’s get a map of Federal Hill out and drop pins with what is already in the database. We can add to it later if anyone shows up with more of those drugs.”

Rory looked over the large map of the city. He then pinned up the first of the stack of mylar overlays- the zoning areas (residential, commercial, industrial), population density, notable locations, property value, and more, pretty much every bit of public domain information he could gather was plotted onto their own Mylar sheet. He liked computers for crunching algorithms and rendering models, but for analysis, give him a whiteboard anyday.
He left a note for Rose that he'd be back and stepped out.
Later...
Rory opened the door an the apartment still hadn't been touched. He hadn't expected her to get off early, but still.
Rory pulled out his notepad and started in on a fresh Mylar sheet. After a good hour of measuring, marking and checking notes Rory hung up the overlay he was most proud of, the main points of interest of the hisil. They at least had the specifics for the main features. He would probably have to spend the next week or so really getting into the weeds to get the detail he wanted though.

Dropping her head on her desk in agony, Rose groaned when Price tried to confirm that she had not, in fact, managed to obtain any useful information from the evidence room. "Ugh. That could not have gone worse. Well, I mean I guess it could have, but still. Who knew the evidence room was a confusing mess??? Someone needs to organize that shit. Maybe Wayne should spend less time talking about dogs and more time doing his job." Her voice was bitter and annoyed. Price started to speak and Rose waved her hand. "Ok, fine, I'm not actually mad at him. I'm furious with myself and he's an easy target. Tell me we have an alternate method of getting the information we need, Price. I could use some good news."
She raised her head and surveyed him briefly. He opened his mouth to talk, again and she jumped in once more. "Just so we're clear, I'm not expecting you to solve everything. I pull my own weight. Even on hunts-" Rose broke off, stumbling over her words as she tried to recover her momentum. Price stared at her. "I mean, um. Yeah, sometimes I go hunting. With other people. Some friends of mine. ANYWAY, what's our next move?" She held her breath, hoping he wouldn't pursue the topic.
