IC Laws
There are no slaves in New Petra. New Petra is a freeperson's city. As such, slavery and the ownership of slaves is not permitted within the city's walls. Those caught smuggling slaves in or out of the city are punished on a first, second and third offense basis. Upon the first offense, the guilty party's crime is announced publicly. They are then sentenced to a day in the stocks. Upon the second offense, the guilty party is imprisoned for a week (or longer, depending upon the number of slaves in their possession). Upon the third, the guilty party's properties and holdings are seized by the House, and they are banished from New Petra. Upon every offense, all slaves found in the guilty party's possession are granted their freedom.
A Note: Though outright slavery is illegal in the city, indentured servitude is not. Many slave-owners visiting the city work their way around this law by referring to their chattel as indentured servants. Even the Lords of the House are said to keep indentured servants.
The poor are welcome. The impoverished and homeless in New Petra pay no taxes, nor do recently freed slaves. Members of the middle class (merchants, craftspersons, et cetera) pay ten percent in taxes. Members of the upper class (nobles and the particularly wealthy) pay fifteen.
A Note: Workhouses are open to the poor and homeless. Therein, they are provided with apartments, food, and a small income in exchange for work. Upon reaching the point that they are able to leave the workhouse, they will begin to pay taxes. Those who are not living in a workhouse have two weeks to find employment within the city before they are removed from New Petra.
Order will be kept. The offenses which would be illegal in any city are likewise illegal in New Petra; murder, thievery, and so on. Most crimes are dealt with on a first, second and third offense basis. Upon the first offense for thievery, for instance, punishment is announcement of one's crime and a day in the stocks. Upon the second, a week in prison. Upon the third, removal of a hand. Punishment for murder differs somewhat, in that it instead occurs on a case by case basis, as murder is common in the Pit.
A Note: A convicted criminal may make an appeal to the Council or the Lords of the House to avoid or alter their punishment. They are not guaranteed success.
The House and the Council are law. On paper, only the Council is law. In practice, the Lords of the House have just as much sway. In addition to the Council members, the Lords may act as judges in any dispute. Both the Lords and the Council have a hand in writing the laws of New Petra.
A Note: It is broadly understood that both the Council members and the Lords collect a small share of the city's taxes. -
OOC Conduct
Group rating. Both Furcadia's Group and Dream Standards and ToS apply to New Petra. Players are expected to be familiar with both. New Petra is an A18+ rated group. Therefore, all rules associated with the A18+ standard apply.
A Note: Players and characters under 18 years of age are not allowed in New Petra. Erotic themes are allowed within New Petra (with exceptions, see below). However, no sexually explicit content is permitted in public spaces. Players should be prepared to encounter moderate non-sexual violence, explicit language and adult themes.
Setting. The setting and timeline for New Petra are largely low-technology. Steampunk themes and magitech are allowed, but modern technology, items and affectation are somewhat out of place.
A Note: As New Petra is home to several inter-dimensional portals, we can be a bit flexible on this. However, we prefer that characters fit the overall theme of the group.
Courtesy. This one is something of a given. Be respectful of and courteous to your fellow players.
A Note: This rule does extend to your posts. Please avoid behaviours such as passive-aggressively insulting a player or character in your post in a manner which that player/character can't actively respond to in-universe. This means things like making derogatory comments in your narrative, but not having your character give any outward sign of their thoughts or feelings.
Respect staff authority. As it says on the tin. Staff are volunteering their time to make this group a pleasant place for everyone to RP in. Respect them, as well as the authority they've been given.
A Note: If you believe a staff member is abusing their authority, you can approach either the Englishman or Azzaroth with the issue.
God-Moding. Don't.
A Note: Seriously, don't.
