A battlefield during the Omnic Crisis, the city was later identified as a hotspot by Overwatch after the conflict.
Decades after the Omnic Crisis, Calado and the Vishkar Corporation were in competition for (re-)development of the city. Rio's mayor favoured Calado's proposal over Vishkar's, due to the company's history with Rio. This was in the midst of protests from Rio's townsfolk, protesting against any re-development of their neighbourhoods. However, as the Calado building was destroyed in a detonation, the contract went to Vishkar. Months later, Rio had a new city centre.
Unknown if it was part of the original deal or otherwise, Vishkar secured a contract to redevelop large tracts of the city. The people were told that the development would improve their lives. However, that promise never became a reality. Instead Vishkar imposed controls on the residents in the name of building a more orderly society: enforcing curfews, cracking down on what the company perceived as lawless behaviour, and exploiting the populace as a cheap labour force.
Sonic technology was employed to suppress the people. However, city resident LĂșcio Correia dos Santos stole this technology and used it against Vishkar, leading a popular uprising that drove the corporation out of Rio de Janeiro.
