The most serious crimes are to be heard by the Court Officials. The accused will have to face trial by ordeal to decide whether they are guilty, or not guilty.

    Ordeal by Fire:
The accused has to pick up a freshly heated piece of steel, and walk with it three or four paces. Alternatively, one may choose to walk three or four paces across hot coals, this is often reserved for trade/craft folk who need their hands. The wounds will then be bandaged and they will be ordered to return to a Court Official after three days. If their hands show signs of healing, they are innocent. If they do not, they are pronounced guilty. (OF)

    Ordeal by Combat:
Noblemen will fight (usually to the death) in combat with their accuser. The winner of the battle would be considered to be in the right. Champions ARE NOT ALLOWED, because champions are for wussies. (OC)

    Lesser Crimes:
Lesser crimes will be determined based upon the impact of the crime. (LC)

-Dungeon time: Normally reserved for untrustworthy suspects awaiting trail, can be used for unruly drunks/drugged folks to come down.
-Flogging: Lashes across the back, in sets of three
-Stocks: A Day or two in the stocks will straighten you out! Free rotten food given out to be thrown at you the entire time.
-Indentured servitude (To pay off damages type of thing): Based on the damage done, and the hours forced to work by the victim, aka they may want you to work 16 hrs a day, or 4. All depends on the victim's desire!
-Branding on the Brow (Symbols or letters to mark an unrepentant criminal.)
    - Banishment: It does not warrant death, but due to disruptions the individual would cause by remaining they are to be permanently banished.

    Oh, ohhh it's magiiic... y'knoooow

    Magic and The Tree
    • The tree enhances magical energy on the island as well as absorbing the excess magic it produces. It acts as a filter as well as recycling system in essence, 'cleaning' energy to return it to a 'normal' or baseline state.
    • The tree has limits on the amount of magical transfer that can occur; Success is not guaranteed, similarly failure is not guaranteed. If there is an excess of energy attempting to be used the extra is shunted off out to sea as a self-preservation mechanism.
    • Flora and fauna are affected by the elements Water and Earth, the weather and how many storms occur is effected by Fire and Air magic for heat and storms. For Example: If there are more earth and water mages on the island than the plants bloom faster & more exotic plants are likely to bloom! If there are more air and fire mages more storms will come to the island!

Moe Atua formally recognizes four elements, the others are unknown to the islanders as this is not a place where magical scholars travel often. The islanders believe that all other magic on the island contributes to the daily chaos normally found around the ocean. (This is not to say other magic does not exist! It does, the local islanders won’t know what to call it or how to place it icly.)

    Shaman

To be clear right off Shamanism is magic, but not exactly the same. It follows the same stresses, costs, preps (sometimes more), and negatives as normal magics. Technically it's classified as a type of 'hedge mage' otherwise defined as an untrained magic user. Shamanism doesn't quite fill this qualification all of the time because most shamans receive training from mentors or spirits.

A shaman's main advantage is that they tend to have a better and more friendly relationship with spirits and elementals (on average) by methodology. A normal magic user would attempt to prove dominance and even while not using an overt threat their reputation and power is an implied consequence to elementals. Shaman more often seek to treat elementals and spirits as entities of a different species that follows different rules.

Here's an example: A traditional mage and a shaman get an invite to the same party with a +1. The mage calls his favorite elemental and says, "We're going to this party." The shaman calls his favorite friend spirit and says, "Hey there's this party we're invited to, if you want to go that would be cool."

While a shaman enjoys a more amicable way of communication this also means that spirits can refuse for any reason, to which a skilled shaman uses a tactic similar to, 'Alright, if you don't want to I'll keep looking." This can mean a higher failure rate if a shaman is trying a 'quick and dirty' method for their type. Usually they employ longer rituals which when broken down are geared to debate or coax (favors or gifts in exchange for a service) to counteract the lessened chance of success. A good guideline to go by is to add 30-50% more time to any action using shamanism. Cut that short and your luck starts to slim down.

Now a shaman is as well versed at protection and what they would call 'a brute force method' which is draining, mostly taboo and not suggested. Instead of spells for protections a shaman would use more physical components to their work such as charms and fetishes. When a spirit is friendly enough with a shaman they may bestow some energy or minor effect into fetishes and charms to help protect their mortal buddy. Shaman believe that spirits can see just as good as we can, (they do, it's a little different, and requires more effort) and in reality there's little difference but they think it works so they do it.

A shaman can employ one 'quick and dirty' solution but it requires that they be at least 50% physical wellness/energy levels (with some leeway for 'dying breath' moments, no fakers) and it WILL drain them for a couple of days leaving them bedridden. This is more or less cashing in spare favors as well as expending all of one's remaining energy. Mages use the same system.

As for what exactly a shaman is capable of, the short answer is as long as they have the training, know-how, and experience: Anything a mage can do. What you need to remember as a shaman is that your magic is more organic and natural. You work with spirits and nature, appeasing instead of showing strength. Though just like a powerful furre powerful shaman will eventually gain spirit 'enemies' that work against them to a degree. One cannot make strong allies without garnering strong enemies.

    Good & Evil
    • Good and Evil on the island are defined as things that help or hurt the island as a whole or the individuals settled on the island.
Evil intent to the land or citizens will be targeted with an almost sentient like directive. Should a spell be cast with the intent or an effect that would damage the island or citizens (i.E pestilence or famine) the caster would have their magic drained with greater force than the typical drain that happens naturally on the island. This is not to say that other smaller more subtle spells won't slip through the island's notice. Overt and obvious damaging magics are the ones targeted.

Depending on their proximity to the Tree it's self they will hear whispers, a soft indistinct murmur that would become a howling scream of rage that drowns out all outside sound if actually in the grove while casting.
    • Should a spell of ill intent be directed at the tree, the ground will vibrate across the Island and all of the trees over five paces tall will begin to 'shriek' in unison. The tree is essential to the island’s way of life and so the tree will warn all those who use it.

    Preps
    • Due to the nature of the island when magic is cast small changes will occur in the localized area that the energy is being gathered for a spell. Fire magic will warm an area, Earth magic will cause plants to become more vibrant, water magic might cause small waves to come in, and air would stir up a breeze. The amount of magic used directly correlates with the side-effects.

1 Prep: Cantrip, minor spell will only create changes noticeable within about 10 paces.

2 Prep: Minor spell, creates negligible damage or small beneficial affect, side-effect range of 20 paces.

3 Prep: 'normal level' spell, creates some damage or moderately beneficial effect, side-effects range at 40 paces.

4 Prep: Potent spell, cripple a limb or a definite advantage from the spell, side-effects range at 80 paces.

5 Prep: Gain admin approval as spells of this level or higher could effect structures on the map or cause a widespread side-effect that would warrant an emit.

    Things to Note
    • A pace is one square of the dream so a single step.
    • This is a small Island in the middle of the ocean not a major trade hub, supplies are limited to what LV brings in or what players import (AFTER checking with admins).
    • The hunting grounds are on a separate island and require a boat or wings to travel to as there are dangerous sea creatures inbetween the two.
  • Rules: General

    Dream rating: A18+
"A" stands for Adult. This means our dream is best suited for adults who are at least eighteen years of age due to content.

Players under the age of 18 are not allowed here, no exceptions are made.

Coarse language, sexual discussion, violence, and adult themes may be encountered.

Extreme violence and extreme (non-period) sexual content is not allowed. This means your character cannot just run around naked all the time. While occasional nudity is fine, it has to have an IC purpose. Otherwise it will not be tolerated.

    Character balance clause
Due to the nature of the Island and the players within certain things cannot be allowed in characters to keep the dream in balance. Invulnerable cannot be anywhere in a character. Relations to Primes (as in family, blood, parent) cannot be allowed. Demons/Angels are too powerful for the community we have here. Demi- or God cannot be allowed either. There are very few 'powerful' characters allowed in the dream as this is a small island of tribals and the possibility of being steamrolled would only be fun for the one doing the destruction. There is no need for exceptionally powerful beings here, this is not Metropolis and we do not have the budget to rebuild the village every other week.

    Medieval Only
This is a medieval based dream, in the year 1176. Being in medieval times, this means your description and your character must be acceptable for this type of roleplay. Your character isn't going to walk in wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and carrying a gun. Those are a few examples of things that do not exist. If you have questions on what exists, please ask a member of staff.

    IC and OOC.
IC and OOC should be kept separate at all times. Do not take OOC into IC, and do not take IC into OOC. Problems with a player OOC should not have any affect on how your character acts around theirs, unless there is an IC reason for the characters to dislike each other.

Along with this, all OOC comments need to be separated in brackets. Only make OOC comments if it is absolutely necessary. Otherwise, OOC will not be tolerated. This is a strict IC dream. OOC should only be done in whispers, or in the OOC room. To get to the OOC room say @idle. You will be moved to the OOC room for constant OOCing, and if it continues, ejected.

    Respect
Have respect for the dream admin, staff, and it's patrons. Disrespect may lead to ejection, depending on the severity. We respect you, so please return the favor.

    Be adults
Do not get yourself involved in petty arguments over, say, an IC fight. Please try to deal with these situations in a civilized manner, and by yourself. Do not flood the screens with OOC comments, resolve issues in whispers, with only the parties that need to be involved. Don't bother the admins with things that you're fully capable of dealing with yourself. This is a game, and we're all just here to have fun.

    RP etiquette
Please be aware that your character is where you put the avatar, ICly. If your character is not there, do not put your avatar there.

If you step into the tavern and there are people rping, it is common courtesy to make an entrance post. Even if it's just to say your character pops in, looks for someone, and pops back out. Having your character run back and forth by active rp is offensive to other players.

Posting an entrance also prevents you from being accused of OOCly spying.

Having your character lurk around without posting isn't allowed. If you're going to place your character in a high rp area, make sure to post an entrance. Be sure not to just idle after that post, though, if you're in an area where rp is happening, please be part of the rp.

This will not be tolerated as we are a strict roleplaying dream.

    Descriptions
An acceptable IC description is needed, on the first click. Rarely does anyone really want to spend the extra time to go to a web page instead of just reading a description on Furcadia. Having a description, and then an extra link added in is perfectly acceptable. But you must have a desc on click.

Not only that, but there is a requirement for descriptions. Your description must be at least five lines in length. If it is not, you will be asked to write one that is at least five lines.

On the topic of descriptions, they are to describe what some other furre will see when looking at your character. If someone wouldn't know the information by glancing at your character, then it should not be in the description.

    God moding
Absolutely no god moding. Characters should not be so powerful that they cannot be defeated- your posts will most likely be ignored if this happens. Most players will consider this twinking if your character takes no hits, or doesn't react to a certain hit. So please, if you're going to play a high-power character, make it somewhat realistic. Keep it under control so that we don't have to make more limits on what we allow in the dream. Nobody wants more limits.

    Permission to play
If you are trying to receive permission to play one of the restricted characters, we will most likely ask you to post a character sheet and wait for permission from owner/co-owner. This does not mean you have permission. This only means we are allowing you to post a sheet for further review. We reserve the right to ask anyone we think might not fall under our RP guidelines to post a sheet for review. If you do not wish to post one, this is at your own discretion, and you may be asked to no longer rp the character in Kumu Niu until you've allowed your character to be reviewed.

    Blocking doors
Not exactly a rule, but something that makes moving around the dream a lot easier. Please do not block stair ways or doors. If your character is standing in a doorway or on the stairs ICly, please just move them to the side so that others can still slip through.

    Advertising
Advertising other dreams through our dream/forums is a no no. It's pretty offensive, not to mention rude for how much work has been put into Kumu Niu.
