An Alternate World

  • Alternative Energy Sources

This is a 'what if' type of thing. It is a parallel universe that the biggest share of the inhabitants chose a different path to walk on instead of what they were walking on. The 'what if' is what they choose to used an Alternative Energy Sources instead of gas and Bell's electricity. Tessla wanted one where people got free electricity and we run on steam for nearly all things. Read below what the energy sources are.
Tessla's idea of electricity did not get much support. It is there in small amounts here and there.

This age turned to Alternative Energy Sources. These being Physical, Steam, Solar, Wind and Magicks. Each Energy Source has its advantages and disadvantages. In this section, I will describe each Energy Source, how it is made or found, advantages and disadvantages.
    Physical Energy
Physical Energy comes from the human or animals. The actual strength varies between each being and the being can wear out from overwork. The advantage is that the Physical Energy is easily renewed but the disadvantage is that it can wear out just as easily requiring many humans or animals that must be fed, housed, clothes and have medical needs.
    Steam
Steam is the next oldest Energy Source and the easiest as well as the most reliable. It requires 3 things- a steam engine, water and heat. The advantages are that Steam can do the work of 10 or more men. The disadvantage is that Water and Heat must be replenished as it is used or the engine will stop. Many humans also consider Steam to be messy and noisy.
    Solar and Wind

Solar was developed at the same time as Wind. Both Energy Sources have the same advantages and disadvantages. They come from unpredictable sources- the sun and the wind which is the main disadvantage. The advantage is that both Solar and Wind are free for all who uses them. There are now Batteries that can store some of the excess Energy but the Energy dissipates with time.
  • The Magickal Energy Sources

Magicks is a good source as long as there is someone who can 'Wield the Magicks'. Only 20-25 per cent of the humans have this Magick Source. Most of these do not become strong enough to withstand the rigors of acquiring the necessary education so that the skills can be learned for a degree. Out of every 100 humans, 20-25 will have the ability. Out of the 20-25, only 10-12 will have the finances to go to the Academy. Out of the 10-12, there will be 8-10 who can withstand the rigors of that the Academy puts a Magician (the student) through on a daily basis. 1-2 will stay with the Academy to either teach or as a scientist of one kind or another. The last 7 or 8 will leave each year to find jobs in the world. These humans are called Sorcerers or Sorceresses and they will have the ‘k’ on their magic resulting in Magick.

There is one thing that I must point out here. There are two kinds of humans that can do Magicks. Those who are born with the Ability of Wielding Magicks and those who have Ability of the Magique.

To be able to Wield Magicks are those who must train to be able to Pull the Energy from a source. They are not as common as those who have what is called Inherent Magic born with an Inner Magicks Source. No one has figure out exactly what this Inner Magicks Source is but it suspected to be part of their Essence of Life or their ability to live for there is a high mortality rate among the Inherent Magic Class.

About half of those who are born to those with Inherent Magic die within the first 5 years of Life. Each passing year, the child grows stronger. Once it reaches 5 years old, it is considered old enough to actually train. And that is why many parents do not name their children for the first 5 years. But when they do, the whole village celebrates with many gifts and festivities for several days.

But those that have not reached their 5th birthday do not celebrate but is kept inside the home during these parties in order not to overtire or stress the child. Someone watches over them and the villagers take turns in this duty. Many villages now have a community home for these children and they do not live with their parents until their 5th birthday.

The child is now named by someone who knows the child well. Then the named child will live with the parents for 5 years before starting their apprenticeship to their parents or to someone who is willing to train the child.

The training begins with figuring out which Inherent Magic the named child has. Inherent Magic deals with the four elements- Fire, Earth, Water, Air/Wind-plus Mental and Weather.

Now let’s talk more specifically about the other 2 groups of that do not attend the Academy. Training is how the two groups learn their ability that is the difference.

The most common is the Apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship starts at the age of 10. The Apprentice is now considered to be able to tell the difference from right and wrong. It is expected that the Apprentice will be obedient to the one who is training. It will start out with Book Learning and Experience or in other words specific chores. Each Apprentice will have his or her own room, desk, shelves for books and a place to put their belongings. Many times the bed is above other items to conserve space.

The Apprentice’s day starts early with a few chores which must be done before breakfast. This is to teach the Apprentice to ignore some hunger pains and heightens the appetite for breakfast. It is a large meal for the Apprentice will only have a light lunch on the go consisting of bread and milk, possibly fruit or cheese added if he or she has done well.

The Apprentice is usually allowed to have drinks at the desk if he or she is careful while studying. Depending on the personal schedule, the morning or afternoon is given to studies in their room with the door open.

After 5 years, the Apprentice becomes an Assistant or if has not learned enough, goes home to be wedded.

An Assistant is given a larger room with a bed on the floor and more responsibilities. Their desk and possessions are moved into this room and a week is given so that he or she is refreshed for the new position. For the next 2-3 years, the Assistant takes on the full work load of an adult plus more studies. A several new born lambs are given to the Assistant for his or her own Sheepskins.

The Sheepskin tells what the Assistant has accomplished over the years with the Mentor. The reason why the Assistant must raise the new born lamb is to emphasize that with every skill learned, a sacrifice must be made.

By the time the Assistant is finished with his or her training, she or he will have written at least 25 or more books. Some are copied word for word, some are put into their own words while yet many are copied in both. They also write a daily journal and their own discoveries as well as their own opinions of things. All of them written on Sheepskin and bound with Leather that the Mentor has prepared for the named child through out its training.

When they are near graduation, they are taught how to use Void Magic which is a very closely guarded secret as well as the making of Magickal Sheepskin. Many say that great teachers are known for their own way of Void Magic and Magickal Sheepskin. These are closely guarded secrets which is written on Sheepskin in a Blood Oath to the teacher swearing that as long as they both shall live, the Assistant will not tell anyone of the secret except to pass it down to the next generation providing that they are deserving of the secret.

The Assistant last assignments are to make a special trunk for his or her own books as well as their own Magical Sheepskin. The design is up to the imagination of the Assistant.
They will attain the title of Wizard or Wizardess. Sometimes if the named child has done exceeding well, they might be given a copy of The Sacred Books.

The lowest class of all Magicks is the Wildcatter. This person does not have any training at all. They have stumbled on the books left unguarded or have experimented with their Ability of the Magique. These humans are rare for they normally have mishaps that take their lives. Those who do survive are simply called Magic Users.

    The Topic of Magickal Energy

All Magicks use Magickal Energy. There are several ways to get Magickal Energy.
Those who go to The Magickseum to study use Energy Stones and Personal Strength.
Those who go into Apprenticeship use Inherent Magic, Power of Essence and Personal Strength.
There are some who use Power Stones as well as Inherent Magic, Power of Essence and Personal Strength.

Energy stones wear out with use. More can found at special Nodes across the world.
Power of Essence is the inner personal power that those with Inherent Magic may draw off to do Magicks. It can be shortened to PoE. If you run out of Poe you will faint and will need to rest a day or even more depending on your Recovery Rate and Energy Expense.

Energy Stones can replenish your energy but they are costly. Only those without the Ability of Wielding Magicks can ‘harvest’ these stones but it is a dangerous work because of the fact the Sorcerer or Sorceress is used to absorbing Magick Energy.

Also the Harvest Clusters (where the Energy Stones can be found in caves in clusters) are hard to find. One needs a small well trained dragon (called Hunter Dragon ) which is also very difficult to attained and train. Usually a team of a Sorcerer or Sorceress and their non-magical bond servant will do the work.
Sometimes a Wildcatter or a Wizard or a Wizardess will stake a claim on one of these caves so they can ‘harvest’ the Energy Stones for their own benefit whether it is for the Energy or to sell to others. They will also train Hunter Dragons and may have their own breeding farm.
