Name: Renee Talras
Race: Elf
Age: 26
Appearance: Standing at 5'2", Renee is all compact, narrow muscle and pointed features. She has dark olive-brown skin, and her faded vallaslin (half-complete, and only later finished with a more Orlesian touch) is a shade of brown that comes close to blending into it in poor light. She keeps her dark hair cropped short. While she endures the rigors of the field, she takes the best care she can of her appearance, seeming to treat cosmetics as a sort of war paint for both social and martial encounters.
Class & specialisation: Rogue (Archer) - Bard
Preferred role: Warden-Ensign
Brief History: Born in a Dalish clan in the wilds of Orlais, Renee--named Sarel by her parents--lost all her family but her younger sister Halen at the age of 11, when some Ferelden refugees decided to try their hand at banditry against the tiny clan of elves. Sarel and Haren were taken in by a traveling bard, Cerise, who gave them Orlesian names, Renee and Lucile, and gave Renee in particular basic training in the bardic arts. They served as assistants, distractions, and exotic bait for Cerise for years, until the young heir to an Orlesian barony took the bait too thoroughly and Renee cut his throat to defend Lucile.
Cerise was neither able nor willing to defend her charges from the consequences, not when she had her own skin to preserve, so Renee and her sister were forced out on their own again. They struggled to fend for themselves, but between Renee's musical skill and Lucile's ranger abilities, they survived one day to the next for long enough to get picked up by a mercenary band. At this time the unrest that would become the War of the Lions was providing plenty of work for groups such as this one, the White-Wood Band.
Unfortunately their commander, a Captain Vivien, chose the wrong side in the war. He considered himself a father to his men, and he feared that they would suffer retaliation, whether subtle or overt, from the victors. In light of this he dissolved his company and reached out to a contact in the Grey Wardens, inviting them to recruit among the skilled soldiers who had been under his command. Lucile refused to consider recruitment, declaring her intention to become Halen again and find the other remnants of her clan; while it hurt to part from her after all their lives together, Renee found that the Dalish didn't hold such a strong pull, and Halen encouraged her sister to stop living as her protector and follow her own path. Renee eventually chose to volunteer for the Joining, and survived it.
She spent the time afterward training, then going on missions under the command of her senior Wardens. When the Wardens of Orlais decided to send some of their own to bolster Vigil's Keep, Renee went out of the way to avoid the assignment--to no avail. She went reluctantly, gritting her teeth but following orders.
