A fairly new phenomenon, mutants have begun to emerge in areas bombarded by radiation during the war. Mutants are entirely human-- save for the varied ways in which they are deformed and disfigured. They can be found in the kind of impoverished ruins no one has bothered to clean up, or highly toxic locations like Midian.
Mutants are not meant to be pretty though some may look very human, nor do they have any special powers. Their bodies are in a state of constant degeneration and flux. While some of them embrace their new station in life, most are desperately seeking a way to stay alive. Considering how many scientists would love to get their hands on a mutant, seeking that cure can be extremely risky.
While playing a mutant allows for a broad creativity in appearance, stay within reason.
Mutants. You hear rumors about them all the time. It’s only in Midian they turn out to be true.
After the Last Great War the toxins of the bombs used filtered heavily in the Midian soil. The area was almost unlivable, and it was made only worse when Midian began to gain a population. Chemicals from hospitals and labs worked into the sewer water and bled off into the ocean. Most people were unaffected, but an unlucky few might have had a bad reaction.
Those who did not become mutants by way of the mildly toxic landscape met their fate in other ways. Through experiments on Midian or the mainland, or by way of genetic work gone wrong. On the mainland these sick creatures would be shunned, pushed aside, and forced toward the edges of civilization. Pushed toward Free Cities.
In Midian, their life is no different. Mutants who are obviously deformed are often treated as freaks and monsters. Those who are less obvious would be shunned like the sick. Their life is unwelcoming and lonely. But at least they are alive… For now.
Empty lands always become a focus for the criminal, and slowly people began to bleed back into the city earlier than even the World Union expected. Sometimes, they got sick and died and then there were others. The toxic environment forced them to adapt. The saying goes “nature will find a way”. It did. Those who had to adjust rapidly to the harsh elements of the island found that their bodies began to attempt to rapid evolve in unwanted ways.
Mutants are not often pretty, though some can look startlingly normal. There are still others who look a lot like the creatures you’d see in old horror flicks. They are a well kept Midian secret. Not by their choice, mind you, there are just not often thought to actually exist. Rumors still float around, however, that someone was attacked by strange creatures from the sewers. Freakish looking things, with a whole variety of illness.
Still, they remain elusive.
Mutants will often stick to the lesser populated areas of Midian. They haunt the sewers and tend to try and stay away from people. Those who look too odd might only come to the surface when they desperately need something, as they never expect the welcome to be warm.
The Mutants who look more human might try to fit in with people, passing for as human as they can. Very few are open about what they are, and those that talk about it might not get the best reception. They may even find themselves hunted down by extreme humanist groups.
Having been a recent occurrence, they have not had much time with each other to develop their own outright culture, and many of them are still in the mindset of the Human Culture they were born of. The only question that remains is what kind of Mutant will you be?
Mutants are only as rare as people who play them. They are also a very genetically voile race. While playing a Mutant you will often have side effects of either being very sickly, having odd allergies, or possibly being mentally deranged. Some of them are lucky enough to only have deformed limbs or features.
A mutant is classified by anyone who is not human, replicant, or hybrid. If a lab has done work on you and edited your genes beyond humanity, then you are a Mutant.
As a Mutant, it is important to realize that you are still bound by the Midian city avatar rules. Meaning you have one head, two arms, one torso, and two legs and feet. You are not really granted any special abilities as a mutant beyond appearance. If you have mutated into an animal like creature, please review the Hybrid Information section and abide by those rules. This does not mean you have decided to play a character with a crab like arm, that’s still human. However, a mutant who has a face like a cat and developed their abilities would probably want to consider the hybrid section.
In the cases of human looking mutants, remember you cannot be both fast and strong. You need to pick one or the other. This is to encourage fair play. You also will not likely have any random abilities appear. Most of your time will be spent trying to keep yourself alive and stable, not being an X-men style super hero. Though, I can relate to wanting to play that. I think they’re cool too.
Mutants, as they are commonly played, tend to be ugly monsters for people to fight, or misunderstood freaks.
As a misunderstood freak they inspire both fear and pity in most players because their deformities belie a perfectly normal, if not noble, personality. The pathos associated with this trope is the implication that they could easily have become a well-adjusted member of society if not for the hideousness that they are powerless to remedy. Some Mutants may have had mental illness leave them with no clue they're a monster. They're a member of a species that traditionally does nasty things to people if Hollywood is to be believed, but for them it just never crossed their mind. Folks tend to scream and run away, which is rather disheartening and lonely, but they don't really understand it.The defining trait of these types of mutants is their "hideous appearance belies a gentle personality" that is doomed to mistreatment because of society's shallowness.
The ugly monster angle normall comes in because people sympathize less with others who have a physical defect. This is in essence a deliberate trip to the Uncanny Valley, and people will find them selves alarmed and prone to shunning your mutant character. However, sometimes the trope is deconstructed and it's possible for character to start out a decent, normal people, but became evil because of being bullied or mocked for the deformity in question.
These set ups are the most common you'll see for any mutant characters, however out of the box ideas are always welcome.
