Hybrids are creatures that have been genetically altered. They often have animal ears and a tail of some sort. They can also come with a selection of odd traits like strange colored skin, longer nails, or naturally, think skin they can use as a type of armor.

These characters are a central trope of sim setting. Often tribal in nature, they embrace a lower tech lifestyle and often run across problems much akin to early American racism as they are not considered human on the mainland. The only areas they are allowed to roam without owners are Free Cities like Midian

Hybrids were made from the produce of gene therapy on humans in an effort to create a disposable person. Due to their animal nature, they began to work into society as slaves and house pets. Where allowed to roam freely they began to create a subculture. Most of the records of their in-depth creation are classified, however, the below log entry from one of the creators has been leaked.

Review by a gene therapist on recent hybrid uprising

Hybrids. They were a scientific problem. The common issue of human's technology advancing faster than its legal process. They were originally created as a type of pet during the legally loose area provided to scientists during The Last Great War. They were meant as a living slave, something that we could use once or a twice, and throw away without having to face any real legal ramifications from World Union laws over the quality of life. And when gene-therapy and genetic structures had taken a bit of a futuristic edge and the line between people and animals began to blur a little? Well. We decided that humanity was defined by a basic set of DNA. If there were more genetic differences between a set of apes than amount races of people well the law only applied to those who fit the genetic profile within a reasonable percentage.

The rest? Well. They were animals. They didn't fit the idea of humanity, and so they were less than people and treated as such. The real problem came in when the idea of basic rights was something they tried to imply to themselves as well as to actual humans. Because they could think. Because they can feel. Like that mattered to us. We began to lose most of the control. They claimed were not just over developed house cats and cattle. They said they were not working animals made to make our lives easier but really, thinking and living things that were a part of humanity.

Worse, people began to believe them.

Supporters for this would get genetic enhancements, done through labs, who were feeding in on the weird fetish subculture of people who enjoyed being stripped of rights and living among the animals yet still hungering for the protection of life being human offered. There was always a reason to have people with a pair of faux ears and a tail when they were trying to pass as some sort of whatever in the eyes of the masses. They called it to protest. You always knew the real hybrids, however. They moved like an animal. There was just a wild sense of beast to them that no human in disguise could mimic. Something that always echoed around them even after they had their ears and tail surgically removed and tried to pass off as human. They were wild. They were tribal. And they were something exotic beyond the normal. It’s hard to describe the basic difference between human and hybrid, but it’s was always obvious. They had that bit of animal nature that no matter how elegant the social structure set up to work around animal mating habits or nature, the views were still obviously there.

These animals are something dangerous and should be controlled. Especially when left to their own breeding and ideas in the depths of a Free City. Their people have gotten rid of the WU laws blocking these creatures from being one with humanity and they go exist as normal people along side of humans.

There, they form groups and cause trouble, as only you would suspect animals would do when not controlled by humans. Like roaming wildlife, they form groups and make family attachments, get into fights, beat people in public and live in a generally absurd way until they are caught by human authority and put through correctional reprogramming like every other creature. They have an always will be animals and no amount of advancement in technology can change that. Do not believe their lies.

The Ten Hybrid Laws

1.) No anime or furry characteristics. No prim hand-paws or prim muzzles

2.) No Non-land mammalian hybrids (aside from reptiles), or mythological or extinct (as of 2012) creatures.

3.) No characteristics not inherent of your animalistic side.

4.) Hybrids may not severely compound attributes such as agility with augmentations. This means no setting off the fact you're small with cyber limbs to make you stronger. The limbs would have weight and slow you down. No offsetting being slow with cybernetics either. No amount of "Reflex enhancement" will change the fact that you are still a large amount of weight to move around. The tech required to offset this would weigh even more, and make you too large to fit the size requirements on sim.

5.) You cannot have the ability to shape shift or transform.

6.) Though hybrids are stronger or faster than humans, you are not superman. That means no leaping across sims, falling from great heights and not being harmed, leaping tall buildings in single bounds, dodging bullets, super powers or magical attributes.

7.) No Powerplay with Scent! Hybrids noses ARE powerful but scent does not work that way. Though people can be recognized by the combination of scents they frequent (such as people who work on the docks can smell of salt and their soap, or smoke is they partake of tobacco) it is very hard to pin down a person's "scent" unless you have something they have been wearing very recently. You'll also want to keep in mind all the harsh garbage, sludge, and smells of the city would overpower the scents of others. This means you cannot smell them from across the sim and show up beside them. Please be aware this goes for Lizard hybrids as well with their tongue. This concept also applies for hearing. Most hybrid hearing ranges are about 15 meters. That means if something is whispered on the edge of your chatrange (you know, where the font goes grey instead of white) you didn't hear it.

8.) Absolutely NO flying or gliding. Any wings/flaps/whatever must be rudimentary (shorter than your character's forearm) and non-functional. This rule also applies to any poisonous mammals. No hybrids will excrete any natural poisons or chemicals. This means if you get a lizard approved, your skin is not toxic.

9.) You CANNOT Change species. Period. You can have Ashagi change your ears and tail, or outward appearance, but it is only cosmetic.

10.) You lose ALL hybrid attributes when you are forced into a different racial state. Ex. Vampirism, Lycanthropy, Severe cybernetics. Because the vampire blood only recognizes the human genome, a hybrid can be turned into a vampire but their tail, ears, etc do fall off in one week due to a breakdown in the genetic code, causing the old appendages to slowly rot off. This may be roleplayed as a hybrid virus (resulting in decomposition of the appendages on a genetic level) running rampant to enable the player to still be involved in the hybrid community but not exposed themselves as supernatural.

While the genetic code reverts them back to a human looking state, they may opt to obtain reasonable likeness to their previous hybrid inspired looks through external prosthetics or cybernetics only. The key difference is that these are external features for show only and are NOT woven in or created as living flesh. The vampiric blood only recognizes the human genome and those naturally occurring and not that which has been created by man in a lab. The transformation is essentially sending living tissue into an undead supernatural state. This is not reversible. The alternative for those who want to go back is to have a logged role-play of sorts saying they had their character cloned prior to the “turn". Keep in mind it’s a consent based sim and nobody can make you turn into a vampire against your will.

Hybrids are not just people with ears. We can only have land mammals, and land reptiles. Hybrids must have humanoid avatars without overly prim sized head, feet, or hands. We do not allow furries. If you’re not sure if it fits send a mentor a picture.

When playing your hybrid you'll want to remember you are humanoid, but because of the razzle-dazzle of gene splicing you may come with a bit of an extra skill. The technological workings are complex, and to be honest with you, we’re not here to recreate the science. What I do know is these abilities are meant to be reasonable. They're meant to be something as more a side effect that you have learned to use in your favor, and they're not to make you super-human.

Points of being a hybrid:

· Being a hybrid does not just mean wearing ears and a tail.

· Consider not only the cosmetic aspects of your hybrid, but how having your particular genetic make-up would affect your hybrid’s personality, place in society, and general playability.

· You cannot be both fast and strong. Nope. Don't do it. Don't try it.

Abilities are not what make a character cool—the way you play that character creates the cool factor. A cat hybrid may use her abilities to always stay on her feet or to make her a particularly skillful dancer. Or an extremely double jointed rodent hybrid has noticed his ability to wedge himself into odd areas comfortably has provided him with a profitable business in selling information.

These additions will be subtle. That means you probably don't often /meow/ after you speak, nor would canine hybrids find themselves oddly drawn to sniffing asses.

Below I have made a list of hybrid abilities and a chart by which you may select from these abilities when forming your own character for roleplay in Midian. Try and branch out! You are not human, but a subtly enhanced creature with an exterior that reveals you as such.

You’re odd. You’re a science project.

HYBRID ABILITIES

You may choose to select one from the overall traits. These are basic advantages that are simply one of the pros of being a genetic monster of a creature who doesn't look enough like the general population to be treated as a real person anywhere but Midian.

So, you may pick one to focus on (strength or speed). After this you may focus on specialty abilities some of which are listed in the following sections as a way to guide you in the right direction. It is not mandatory to pick these traits if you happen to want to make your character weak, you can deny both of them. The traits are there to remind you to try and focus on strength or speed. It’s obvious a rhinoceros hybrid would pick strength unlike a bunny hybrid that would pick speed. Use common sense. Also keep in mind, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE SAME EXACT ABILITIES OF THE ANIMAL YOU ARE SPLICED WITH. If you are a cheetah hybrid, you do not run super fast. You don't have the skeletal structure or musculature for it. Use common sense.

Traits

Above average strength- This means you're stronger than a human can be. Now, let's go ahead and just slow you down now. That does not mean you need to run to google and look up world records and then bring me back a number telling me you are going to beat me in a fight because you can lift seven hundred pounds. This means, when you are interacting with inanimate surroundings you get to be surprisingly strong within reason. Strength is a skill made to be used as something a bit shocking. It is being able to lift heavy couches easily, it is having the ability to really put some heat behind a shove and get people out of your face. It is the small girl who has a grip like a vice. A bear hybrid might want to think about taking this trait.

OR

Above average speed- Humans are fast. If you select this, you can be faster. Do not try and use this trait to say you can dodge a bullet, okay? No one can do that. It's not possible, you are not a “blur of speed,” and you are not “faster than the eye.” You are spooky fast. The type that comes out when you find yourself in a foot race with a human and begin to overtake them on the track field like they haven't be training in the off season and you have. If they were going to try and take a stone from your palm, the human will never be quick enough, but he almost is. Being faster does not mean you have ninja like reflexes but it does mean you can recover a little faster from some things. You were just born to move a little sooner. A bunny hybrid may want to think about taking this trait.
ABILITY GUIDE AND INFORMATION ABOUT HYBRIDS

Once you have selected one trait (strength or speed), then it’s time to move on to selecting two abilities to specialize in. You should choose one from section 1 and another from section 2 for your specialties. Please make sure you try to pick the two abilities that compliment the type of hybrid you are. If you pick retractable claws and night vision for a cat hybrid, it does not mean your hearing totally sucks or can not be remarkably sharp. It just means that your specialty traits are probably strongest and best fit the type of hybrid you are. You can still also have claws if it fits the type of hybrid that you have picked, those claws will just not perform as well as someone who takes specialty ability from the claws card more than likely.

Another example is a hyena hybrid happens to choose strength as a trait. Then that hyena hybrid chooses to have a bone crushing bite (it’s mandibular and maxillary as well as teeth) suited for chewing on bone but not to the same extent as an actual hyena due to biology. Then choose to specialize in advanced smell, again not to same extent as an actual hyena. While it may appear that bone crushing and advanced smell is ALL it can do now, it could also still have thick, claw like nails and excellent hearing. It’s a loose system and once again the specialties just mean you are likely to be strongest in that area. We are not completely ignoring other traits that hybrid may have due to the biology of the animal its being spliced with. Just keep in mind, your hybrid can have abilities you would think common for the trope and class of hybrid it is (such as cat hybrids having slightly better hearing, or better balance than humans) but any extraordinary abilities are limited to the list below. Your character will be very powerful as long as you give the traits some thought before picking them.

We also will NOT allow combinations that do not make sense. You may not pick a dog hybrid and then have venom. Use logic. All abilities are also based upon consent. To clarify this further, it means that just because you are super strong does not mean that if you are in a power match with someone you can assume you will over power them. They may choose to emote that you have not, thusly consenting out of the ability. Even with advanced hearing you cannot listen through walls or into closed rooms. You may also not hear people whispering unless they consent for you to do so. It should also be noted various hoofed animals may have their horns but would need slightly thicker skulls and extra muscle mass around the neck to support such if used for ramming. This is however still a poor attribute given the drastic difference in human bipedal anatomy and those of the quadruped kind. Remember that before you go and try goring or ramming people with pointy things atop your head.

Different hybrids are made for different purposes and all hybrids are not equal. Some key areas that hybrids are created for include, labor intensive projects, big game (hybrids created just to be hunted for sport), cosmetic reasons, and slaves sexual or otherwise. Some are also fitted for stealth and others are created or bred for fighting much like dog rings where humans can bet on them. They were not created in any case to be super soilders. A bovine hybrid or gorilla hybrid might be better at labor due to a stocky or muscular build. A bunny hybrid might make a good pet for a human owner. A turtle hybrid might make for a totally bad ass ninja hybrid. Just saying.

Some basic gene percentages or rather the amount of animal DNA spliced into a human, as a guide:

· 20% Looks nearly human with minimal animal traits( Most hybrids fall in this category, human looking skin, features, eyes, ears and tail but no further substantial changes).

· 40% Still look human but more drastic traits such as scale and fur may occur along the body( May or may not have change in musculature and skeletal structure in addition to minimum changes as listed in the 20%).

· 60% more heavy behavioral changes and changes in musculature and bone occur within the sim rules. They sacrifice much humanity for this. They are more in tune with nature and their animal senses based on the changes in their environment.

· Anything more than 60% the hybrid is completely unstable and unfit for play. Decomposition on the genetic level may occur with a breakdown of the cells. This is again a common sense guide, no a 60% hybrid cannot automatically be more powerful than a 20%. This is a consent based sim.

· ALL HYBRID MUST STILL BE HUMANOID WITH NO PRIM HEADS, NO FURRIES or ridiculously large avatars. If you aren't sure then send the mentors a picture.

· Remember, land mammals and reptiles only.

Simplified examples for those who need guidance since there are too many hybrid types and abilities to list:

· Lion Hybrid: 1) Retractable claws 2) Night Vision

· Snake Hybrid 1)Venom 2)Infrared Sight

· Hyena Hybrid 1) Crushing bite 2) Advanced Smell

· Rhino Hybrid 1) Thickened hide 2)Advanced Hearing

· Alligator Hybrid 1) Scaled hide 2)Holding Breath

· Badger Hybrid 1) Digging Claws 2) Advanced Smell

· Turtle Hybrid 1)Shell/Armor 2)Holding Breath

· Bear Hybrid 1) Digging Claws 2)Advanced Smell
