"So Cathy's in Texas," Tony repeated back into the phone. He took a big swig of his beer as he propped his feet on the kitchen table and slammed the bottle down. "It certainly took her long enough to call. I was beginning to wonder if we needed to slip the mailman a coupla Andrews, too."
There was a pause as he listened to the person on the other end of the line. "So she asked about me? She's worried for her mama? That's so sweet! Maybe I should have stirred some shit up a little more! I seen her looking out the window at me a couple of times when I drove by. I was wondering if she ditched the Firebird and was sneaking in and we weren't seeing her."
There was another pause.
"No, we don't want to get the law involved here... I don't care about her... We'll let mama bear think she run me off..."
The caller on the other end cut him off.
"A snake in the grass?" Tony chuckled.
There was laughter on the other end of the line.
"She says the sweetest things about me," Tony laughed. "Sounds like she misses me! So where is she shackin' up?"
"A job as a carhop and a reporter for a newspaper? Bull shit! She's walkin' the streets..."
There was another interruption. Tony took a swig of beer and spit it across the kitchen.
"Oh, her mama straight up asked her?"
Tony burst into laughter.
"Of course the little whore denied it. She ain't gonna tell her..."
"Shackin' up with someone named Gary? Chunky what? A kid's pizza place? Never heard of it..."
Tony took another sip of his beer as he got the next bit of news. This was the good stuff.
"Needs money and lost her keys? She's lying her ass off about workin' then. She's only been gone a few weeks. You got that Gary guy's address, though, right?"
Tony clapped his hands together with glee.
"Good job, buddy! I knew I could count on you! All that sittin' by the phone paid off! We need to figure out what part of Texas this Teal Cove's in. You know what they say about that place right? It's full of steers n' queers. At any rate, I need to gather me a posse. Sheriff John T. Alfonso, Texas Ranger, is on the case! We have us a fugitive on the run that needs to be brought back to answer for the theft of one black Pontiac Trans-Am and a load of blow. That bitch better not have snorted or sold any of it or there is gonna be hell to pay!"
There was another pause.
"You too! I'll call you in a little while. I got a few things to figure out here on my end..."
Tony hung the receiver back on the wall and stared off as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Texas, huh? Sneaky, sneaky Cath. But you can't escape me. I don't care how far you run..."
