Basics
This guide has been created to lead you through creating a character for Shadows of Austin. This guide is the most basic version, but each venue may have their own specifications listed in their House Rules section of the site.
This guide assumes that you have joined our Facebook page already, and have created an RPR account. -
Step 1: Contact Storyteller
To start off with, you're going to want to contact the folks running the group! Their profiles are listed at the top of each venue's page, and in the sidebar of the Facebook page.
Pick which venue you would like to join -- each player may have up to 2 characters in separate venues -- and contact their ST on Facebook (either by PMs or by posting on the main page) to see if there's a spot open!
Once you've confirmed there is, you may now begin pitching your character. Give them a basic rundown (no stats or long backstory yet!) of what kind of character you would like to play, and what you're looking for in the game experience. Ask them what their vision for their venue is, and together come up with something you both consider a good addition to our cast of characters. -
Step 2: Character Sheet
Once you've talked to your ST and have gone over your character concept with them, now is the time to start putting dots on your sheet!
Blank text sheets can be found in each venue's House Rules page.
Character creation follows the standard CofD character creation in each book, with venue-specific house rules presented in each venue's pages. Please note that certain traits (such as clan, or some Merits) will affect other traits. If that is the case, you will record those in the notes section of your character sheet.
In addition, no PC may enter play with their Power Stat (Blood Potency, Primal Urge, Wyrd, Gnosis...) higher than 3. -
Step 3: Starting XP
The universal XP floor for new characters is 15. However, one's starting XP can be raised in a few ways:
Past Characters -- if half of your previous character's XP (rounding up) was greater than the XP floor, you may elect to instead take that XP.
Narrators -- For each scene you've Narrated (maximum of 2 per month), you may apply an additional 1 XP to a single new character.
STs -- For each month you've STed for SofA, your XP floor (either from past characters or the default) will raise by 2 XP. For each scene you've STed (maximum of 2 per month), you may apply an additional 1 XP to a single new character.
These bonuses do stack. -
Step 4: Character RPR Profile
Create a profile for your character, and then request to join SofA with that character. Your profile should consist of your character's full (known) name, and an icon displaying your character's appearance.
Fill out the application form in its entirety, and then let your ST know that you've officially submitted your character. They will then choose to approve this character and add them to the venue roster, or deny this character and request some edits.
(Optional) You can also fill out your character's RPR profile with information that STs, Narrators, and other Players can view and use. While this is not necessary, keeping an attractive profile is encouraged, as it will draw more people to our game! -
Step 5: Discord Thread
Once you're ready, contact your ST and have them set up a Discord thread. This is where your character sheet will be stored, and will serve as your bluebooking thread (used for handling downtime--or offscreen--actions), as well as your XP tracker.

Opening Day
Posted By Tzimiskes on Aug 23rd 2018
As September is fast approaching, we are getting ready to launch. It looks like in the beginning we will have Vampire and Mage venues open for submission.
In order to submit a character, just make their RPR page as normal and apply with them -- this time filling in a text version of their character...Hello, World!

Just testing out the features of RpRepository. Shadows of Austin has been created, and is slowly being prepped and getting ready to launch. So sit back, get comfy, and enjoy the show! Once we're ready for play to start, we'll announce it. -
