The Expanse (C&C)

  • Tiberium Dawn

SYSTEM: We will be using the rules as available in The Expanse tabletop ruleset. ( Books link ) (Fillable Character Sheet)

Additionally, we will be use the #age-dice channel in the Quest Connection Discord to roll. Please make sure to include the reason for the roll in your post.

    Example roll:
    Quote:
d6+2d6+2 Gerald, Heavy Pulse Rifle attack vs Raider 1

The dicebot will display the results, with the first d6 rolled representing the Drama Die. Include the roll outcome in your post, with any spent Fortune in parantheses. Remember that altering the Drama Die costs 2 for each point!
    Quote:
    Example roll outcome: 4, 4, 2.

We will be using the @tiberium tag in the Discord, with the #tiberium-chat channel hosting OOC discussions, and combat initiative posted in #tiberium-initiative. On the forums, the game is posted in the Homebrew section.

SETTING: This game will be taking place within the world of Command & Conquer, during the Tiberium Wars (Timeline). Specific point in timeline forthcoming.

The campaign will be from the perspective of people living outside of the GDI's Blue Zones (World map with Tiberium Zone Classifications), in a Yellow Zone in the American Midwest.

Characters will be created starting with the base statistics in the Core Rulebook, with the following changes:

Instead of Earth, Mars, & The Belt as origin points, players will be able to choose between Blue Zone, Yellow Zone, & Red Zone Borderlands origins. As these do not come with mechanical advantages/disadvantages, it will be a primarily roleplay change.

Attributes will be rolled, and then assigned at your choosing instead of in the order in which they are rolled. Exceptionally low average rolls may be corrected by the DM.

Backgrounds, professions and the like may be chosen directly instead of being rolled for, with the usual limitation that you must choose within your social class, or below it (with a +1 income as per the book) and cannot choose higher than your social class. The exception to this is your Social Class, which must be rolled for according to your Origin.

    A typical red zone.
Tiberium infestation has rendered 30% of the planet totally uninhabitable. Large swaths of the Earth's surface have been designated as "Red Zones" - areas that are desolate, swept by storms, and contaminated by vast amounts of Tiberium. Venturing into, over, or even near these wastelands can be extremely dangerous.

Beyond the Red Zones, Tiberium contamination has caused varying levels of environmental damage in another 50% of the Earth's populated areas. In the ecologically compromised and war torn Yellow Zones, Tiberium fields are common - growing in the middle of cities, on farmland, and throughout the environment. Tiberium-related climate change has caused an endless cycle of droughts, floods, and severe weather of all types including spectacular Category 6 hurricanes, tornadoes with wind speeds of 500 miles per hour, and exceedingly violent thunderstorms. Especially destructive Ion Storms occasionally rage out of the Red Zones to wreak havoc on cities and towns in the borderlands.

Only 20% of the Earth's surface is in relatively pristine condition. Blue Zones suffer from minimal Tiberium infestation and have been relatively untouched by war. The populations of the Blue Zones live in relative comfort, going about their lives in high-tech futuristic cities that sit in forested valleys or nestle in pastoral farmland.

Will make a chat to collaborate on character creation, and I will also list here house rules for adjusting the setting. I am absolutely open to suggestions on this!

    Introduction

Life in a yellow zone isn't the most pleasant existence. Food and water are sometimes scarce, the occasional rampant Ion Storm tearing up swathes of landscape with devastating bomb-like lightning strikes, flash floods of unclean water bringing sickness and death. Mutant raiders cross the borders from the inhospitable Red Zones, kidnapping and enslaving, stealing resources where they can. Tiberium is a blessing, and a curse; an immensely powerful resource, a nearly inexhaustible power source, a self-replicating plague ravaging the surface of our world and simultaneously fuelling the largest expansion of human technological knowledge in history.

Tiberium: A gift or a curse?

Tiberium is a scientific curiosity, a vastly powerful resource, an unprecedented environmental cataclysm, a catalyst for war, and much more. It's like nothing we've ever seen before and it is constantly transforming itself.

We are almost certain Tiberium is extraterrestrial in origin; it is not man-made and there is no evidence of the substance on Earth prior to its first appearance half a century ago. Early forms of Tiberium were almost organic, sprouting out of the ground in what seemed to be plant-like pods, leaching minerals out of the Earth and emitting clouds of toxic gas. Over time, Tiberium showed it had the ability to evolve and change.

By 2047, most Tiberium on Earth has manifested in what we know as its most common form: A self-replicating proton lattice that turns any matter it touches into more of itself, giving off powerful radiation in the process. It can change anything it comes into contact with into more Tiberium.

Is Tiberium terraforming the Earth into a planet suitable for alien life? Is it a weapon? It is a creature of some kind? Perhaps some kind of consciousness resides in the crystal lattices, a quantum crystalline brain that grows ever smarter as it grows and grows. There are many theories about what Tiberium actually is... and why it is here. Ultimately, its origin and its purpose - if it has one - are still a mystery.

GDI has not given up on trying to contain the spread of Tiberium. With Tiberium infestation reaching critical levels and new, more sinister variants of the substance turning up, things started to look pretty grim for planet Earth in the middle of the 21st century. However, GDI has found a vulnerability in the green crystal that they have begun to exploit. GDI engineers have found the resonant frequency for Tiberium... and they have created sonic resonators that are capable of breaking up Tiberium crystals.

A high-level scientific explanation of the alien substance is included here for students, engineers, and scientists: The most recent form of Tiberium is a dense "dynamic proton lattice" held together by exotic heavy particles. When Tiberium comes into contact with other matter, the heavy particles randomly collide with the nuclei of the target matter, smashing it to pieces (in the case of smaller nuclei) or incrementally knocking off protons or neutrons (in the case of heavier nuclei). Tiberium captures a fraction of the protons that are ejected during this collision process and incorporates them into its own structure, thus transmuting matter into more Tiberium. Whenever one of the heavy particles - a muon or tauon - collides with an atomic nucleus, fission occurs, which results in the production of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation as well as other forms of electromagnetic radiation (like infra-red). During the transmutation process, nuclei that Tiberium has come into contact with may be changed into nuclei with different (usually fewer) numbers of protons or neutrons.

But it isn't all bad. Out here, there's freedom; freedom from the oppressive GDI's central authority, an overgrown tumor spawned from the old North American Military, and grown into a humongous superstate, gobbling up the identities and independence of other nations, holding back on shipments of necessary anti-Tiberium chemicals and weapons for exclusive use of their member-nations.

The Global Defense Initiative (abbreviated as GDI) is the global government of Earth. It was founded in accordance with the United Nations Global Defense Act (UNGDA), on the date of 12 October 1995, as a united military force for global peacekeeping. The GDI's initial goal was to preserve world order by combating global terrorism, epitomized by its nemesis the Brotherhood of Nod, but eventually outgrew its original mandate to become a world government.

At least, that's how we choose to see things; you see, for most of us in the Yellow Zones, it isn't a matter of choice. Refusing to burden themselves with feeding useless mouths, imprisonment has been replaced with exile, criminals cast out of the Blue Zones to fend for themselves among the many bordering communities in the Yellow Zones. Population limitations forced still others out; vast lotteries that somehow never seemed to select from among society's elite, a thriving black market selling false identities and even the chance to have someone else sent in your stead just barely keeping the gorgeous sanctuaries ahead of their resource expenditures.

To help keep the peace, the GDI have been carrying out an ongoing war with the terrorists known as the Brotherhood of Nod, an organization that has dwelled on the fringes of stable territory since the first emergence of Tiberium in 1995, just over half a century ago. To some, the differences between them are political: While the GDI believe in saving what little is left of the world, fighting Tiberium like a terrible and inevitable foe, the Brotherhood embraces it, studying the effects and uses of Tiberium to try and ease man's transition into a believed 'next step.' In practice, the GDI is responsible for oh so benevolent deliveries of aid supplies, food, water, and rugged shelters to the Yellow Zone survivors, giving them a taste of a world they can never have; the Brotherhood instead focuses on day-to-day needs, providing informal refugee centers, and helping the survivors organize themselves and learn to better survive the Tiberium-twisted landscape.

The Brotherhood of Nod, often shortened to Nod or the Brotherhood, was an organization with the characteristics of a religious movement, a multinational corporation, and a nation-state. It was classified as a terrorist group by the Global Defense Initiative.

The central tenets of Nod's beliefs included the worship of Tiberium, which they saw as the catalyst for the next stage of human evolution; the worship of Kane, Nod's charismatic leader, believed to be immortal by many within the Brotherhood; and the Ascension prophecy, a mythological reward promised to Nod's followers by Kane. In addition, Nod consistently presented itself as the voice of the oppressed masses, and worked to unite the downtrodden and the disenfranchised against the GDI, which it painted as a fascist group subservient to the wealthy western nations and global elites.

The origin of Nod is shrouded in mystery, with the group itself claiming that it existed since before 1800 BC. It rose to prominence in 1995, when a meteorite carrying Tiberium landed near Tiber river in Italy. During this period, Nod launched a series of terrorist attacks all over the world. In response, the United Nations founded the Global Defense Initiative, a multinational military alliance with the goal of eliminating multinational terrorism.

Not everyone lives a nomadic lifestyle in the Yellow Zones, but the only ones who can afford not to require outside support; between Mutants, raiders, and the varying toxicity of the soil, communities remain small and isolated, the high atmospheric ionization destroying any hope of long-range communication between the settlements themselves. Like the information-hungry nations of the second World War gathered around their radios to listen to the BBC broadcasts a century ago, we gather around to receive the high-powered broadcasts the GDI send out into the wasteland, satisfying ourselves with the distant echoes of the vibrant televised lives they show us; the high-powered broadcasts are mainly news, or propaganda, but they also air a number of shows to keep people tuning in. Thankfully, mixed in with the other noise come weather reports; both the ‘natural’ weather blowing off the Red Zones, and the ‘manufactured’ weather generated by the GDI’s weather-altering systems.

Unfortunately, the space nearest the GDI’s protective influence is paradoxically the most dangerous place to be, seeing as the raiders won’t usually trouble dirt-scraping frontiersman, in favor of quick raids on the much more resource-flush communities clinging like ticks to the edges of the Blue Zones.

With this isolation comes another kind of freedom: We don’t care who you are. Whether you were GDI and lost favor, a Brotherhood soldier who lost his faith, a criminal banished from the lush paradise of the Blue Zones, or a survivor, born out here in the Yellow Zone, as long as you do not make trouble for the community, and give back as much as it gives you, you are welcome among us.

Out here, all we have is each other.
