Todd Palma, Micah, and Chatty!
A Pokemon Watcher from the Kanto region, Todd Palma has aspirations of one day becoming a notable PokeProfessor, finding insights and discoveries never before seen, revelations never before revealed! Regrettably, he had the misfortune of being born near Fuchsia city; while the Safari Zone was a natural place for a budding researcher - 'Watcher', as he called himself - it was also an extremely popular and well-charted area. His many forays into the Zone were paid for almost entirely by his natural mechanical aptitude, recovering damaged balls from the Safari Zone, and refurbishing them, returning them to the Rangers in exchange for a small fee. It was within the Safari zone, with the assistance of a Ranger he'd befriended, that he managed to catch his first - and for a long time only - Pokemon, a Rhyhorn he named Micah. He didn't begin by capturing him, however; instead, he was studying the pack of Rhyhorns for several weeks, at the termination of which a poacher was caught in the Safari Zone attempting to hunt them for their horns. The Poacher fled, Rangers in pursuit, leaving a badly wounded Rhyhorn behind; realizing that they hadn't seen the Rhyhorn get hurt, he quickly intervened, using what first aid skills he had to stabilize it long enough for the rangers to return and heal it.
It was shortly after this that he was given a Safari Ball by one of the Rangers, and the Rhyhorn quite willingly allowed itself to be captured, its' gratitude at his assistance overcoming its' natural suspicion.
The addition of Chatty, his Cleffa, came much later; he learned from a Nurse Joy that the Clefable line of pokemon were quite intelligent, and amenable even to learning more difficult topics, such as medical care and even about other Pokemon, able to, with training, serve as able assistants. He traded a series of sketches and his services repairing a handful of Pokeballs for an 'extra' Cleffa that had been born at the Poke Center in town; with the recommendation from the Rangers and an impassioned essay about his hopes for it, the Poke Center was more than willing to allow him to adopt her, and the quite noisy little Cleffa - Chatty, he named her - took to him like a fish to water, following him around and watching him as he sketched and explored.
At the ripe age of 21, however, he was granted a surprisingly large birthday present; a brand new tent and sleeping bag, and some survival supplies, all packaged onto a very nice frame backpack; a surprising gift, given his chosen haunt didn't allow overnight camping, but one that was quickly explained by another gift; a small sum of money and a bus ticket to a town he'd never heard of before, dated for the next day. It would seem that while he was content to live at home and explore the area around Fuchsia City, his parents were less thrilled, and had decided it was time for him to begin his own Pokemon Adventure; and like a Pidgy taking flight for the first time, it began by falling quite unexpectedly out of the nest.
Of course, he wasn't entirely ready to spread his wings, and quickly wore out his welcome in this new town, finally bundling up his possessions and taking off on the path to another town, somewhere a little farther out, a little closer to nature; he consoled himself by thinking of all the new discoveries he could make, even as he rode along on Micah's back, sitting cross-legged as the squat but powerful beast ambled along. If only he had been more attentive, he might've realized that, at some point, they had quite departed the beaten path...
