In the middle of what used to be the United States of America, you can find what used to be Riverview University. Life on campus isn't exactly what it used to be, but it is drastically better than what you'd find beyond the reinforced walls...
There are more than enough dorm rooms to go around. They can house anything from a single person to a small family. Larger families are often assigned more than one dorm, but they are required to provide extra help around Riverview.
The campus offers both gardens and greenhouses. While the entire community is encouraged to learn about, and help with, the garden if they'd like, there are people who earn their keep doing nothing but that. Those people get the choicest fruits and vegetables.
They keep the cafeteria working at Riverview. People who can cook, or clean, are employed in the cafeteria. Regular meal times are from 7:00am-8:30am 12:00pm-1:00pm, and 7:00pm-9:00pm.
Guards patrolled Riverview, providing another secure career opportunity. Besides making sure people kept the peace and the walkers stayed away, they were in charge of guarding a few buildings. In particular, the Armory and the Commissary.
In the Armory, certain persons are allowed to check weapons out to take outside the gates. Others are allowed certain weapons in order to practice.
The Commissary is really just a small section of booths that individuals own. Since money holds no real value any longer, the individual vendors decide what they're willing to trade for.
Riverview also boasts a large Indoor Recreation area. There is a weights room, an indoor basketball court, a pair of goals, and a little selection of basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, hockey sticks and pucks, and frisbees. Scavenger Teams were always encouraged to find things to add. Anything that would keep morale up.
Thanks to generators that were already on campus in case of emergency, the campus provided electricity between the hours of 6:00 am and 7:00 am, and 6:30 pm and 7:45 pm.
