Bestiary

  • Creatures

Thought this worlds has most if not all regular animals, Ianua is littered with mythological or otherwise extinct creatures. Dragons, griffins, hydras, manticores, chimera and more live on the many lands of Ianua. Not many have established societies and rarely are they seen amongst humans, but bestiaries can be found outlining all known creatures of the world. Not all are listed here as Ianua is host to an ever discovered amount of mystical things. Dire animals can be born from any normal animal. They are usually much larger than the norm and can possess strange qualities such as horns or spikes.

    Dragons

Dragons are the children of magic. They are therefore some of the most magically inclined creatures on Ianua and can live for centuries. Each dragons has a unique breath weapon and build. Male dragons tend to be bigger and thicker built that their female counterparts and have more horns and a tail weapon. The females are more lithe and swift and do not have a tail weapon of any kind.

Note: Most all dragons have pulled themselves out of the world, meaning they've gone to ground or are hiding on Draakmoor, the home of their Conclave. More Chromatic dragons have been seen than Metallic in recent years.

    Metallic

These dragons are largely considered dragons of good. They include Gold, Silver, Bronze, Brass and Copper dragons. Most of these creatures are noble and wise, but do not seek the company of humans willingly. Too many dragons have been slain or persecuted by ignorant humans even in the golden ages. Some will still linger around human friends, but most are solitary creatures.

    Chromatic

These dragons are considered of the evil kind. They include Black, Blue, Red, White and Green. They are willful, condescending and vicious creatures who will take and kill as they please. These are the type of dragons who sack cities and steal precious things to hoard.

    Neutral Dragons

Lesser known than their cousins of good and evil natures are the Neutral dragons. These creatures come in colors such as Yellow and Purple and usually travel the world without regard to good or evil. Many are knowledge seekers and scribes and do not take stances in war or issue.

    Griffins

With the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle, but the rear end of a lion, the griffin is a deadly creature. Highly intelligent and worthy of respect, this noble animal keeps to itself in it's Eyrie, normally built high above human sight. Th Griffin will demand respect from all who look upon it, or its pride will force it to kill. They defend their nests to the death and pair for life. The griffin can come in any eagle coloration while the lion half is limited to tans and whites.

    Unicorns

These stunning creatures are extremely rare on Ianua. They go and live where they please but try to stay secluded as many of the other races try to hunt them for their magic. Unicorns are usually delicate horselike creatures with a lion's sort of tail: Slender and long with a tuft at the end. They have cloven hooves and a spiraling horn which grows from their forehead. The unicorn is among the most magical of creatures and has the ability to speak through minds. Unicorn horn has many and more properties which make it highly sought after.

    Satyr/Faun

These creatures of half men, half goat like animals. The Satyrs is usually short and it's lower half is covered in a thick fur resembling a goat's. They have extra joints at the end of their legs which terminate in a cloven hoof instead of a foot. Their faces are more goat-like that human in that they have flatter noses and big eyes usually with beards. Their ears are human like and they almost always have horns and a goat's tail. Satyrs are creatures of mischief and love having fun losing travelers or pursuing women of other races.

Unlike the Satyr, a faun is less hairy and usually taller. Though they still resemble a mixture of human and goat, the faun's body has less of an average look. Fauns have earth toned skin and hair from browns to greens and also have horns or antlers. However, a faun is a more magical creature who can promote growth in plants and tends to protect it's forest. While the fan can have hooves, it does not always. Some have been known to grow three pronged toes like extinct horses and long tails that split. The faun can often have vegetation growing off itself as well. Do not under estimate fauns, however, they can be fiercely protective of their homes and have been known to savage and sometimes eat wanders who cross them.

    Manticore

A creature with the body of a lion, tail of a scorpion and a face which is more human than cat, the Manticore is a frightening beast. They live in the warm volcanic lands near Saldia but have been found elsewhere in the world. They are ornery when bothered and usually do not hesitate to strike poison into those who cross them. Usually red or flame colored, the Manticore has more than one row of teeth and grows to be almost twice the size of it's lion cousins.

    Hydra

This creature is reptilian in nature and enjoys water as its home. While a hydra is born with only one head and soft leathery scales, it will grow two more heads before adulthood and a line of spines down it's back. The bite of a hydra is poisonous, but only one bite will take a long time to kill, if it does. So the hydra seeks to bite multiple times to kill its prey; hence the extra heads. Coming in a variety of colors which help it blend into it's watery home, the Hydra is most commonly found in the Inlands Seas of Meerveld.

    Cockatrice

The cockatrice is not an overly intelligent animal. But that does not lessen it's ferocity. The cockatrice resembles an overgrown chicken who can stand up to six feet tall with a serpent's spaded tail and horns. This animal usually has plumage the color of domestic roosters and teeth growing out of its beak as well as spikes on it's spine. They have wings, but are flightless and their diets consist of rocks once they mature enough to turn things to stone. When younger and smaller, the cockatrice will dine on normal chicken foods such as worms and grains. Cockatrice will attack when they feel threatened and usually live in grassy areas.

    Basilisk

A sort of reptilian cousin to the Cockatrice, the Basilisks diet is entirely rocks. This creature is as tall as a man and has the ability to walk on two or four of it's legs. The basilisk's body resembles a monitor lizard and it's gaze can turn anything to stone. However, they are not particularly violent creatures and only turn things to eat out of necessity if threatened or the rocks in the area or not good for consuming.

    Kirin

The Kirin are indigenous to Saldia, but have migrated to other parts of the world through trade. A finicky creature, the kirin resembles a sort of reptilian goat or deer with cloven hooves. They have a delicate build with plumes of silky fur on their necks, rumps, joints and long leonine tails. Scales of myriad colors grow along their sides and neck and they can either have antlers or horns growing from their heads. Kirin are in touch with the elements and are often have a breath weapon much like a dragon.

    Inyonikawu; Monkeybirds
Like many of the animals on Northern Maaneri, the monkeys are cross bred with birds. They are a loud animal with the big lungs of a monkey and the inclination to make noise like a bird. They have simian bodies with long feathered tails and flight feathers on their arms while their bodies are otherwise furry. Their faces are round with a monkey's eyes, but their mouths have a sort of beak with teeth. Extremely flexible and agile, the monkeybird is able to glide, but not fly which works out fine for them in the closeness of the jungle. They are a curious and troublesome creature and like to steal and hoard shiny objects from travelers. They came in all colors and patterns, usually bright and ostentatious.

    Inkawukati; Cat birds
The forest of Northern Maaneri holds many wondrous things, much like the Inkawukati, or cat birds. With the bodies of wild cats and the faces and beaks of birds of prey, these creatures are a deadly mixture. They are stealthy and built to stalk and hide in the forests and their main diet consists of monkey birds. Many are poached and sold for their pelts and beaks.

    Wargs

A large canine like creature, the wargs run in packs along the plains of Antallos and various other regions. They have a hulking body that nearly resembled a hyena wolf hybrid. Their races are squat with wide powerful jaws made for crunching through bone. Their ears are pricked, but small and spaced far apart on their massive skulls and their front halves are usually bulkier than the backs. They are covered in a dense, coarse fur that is usually tannish with some spotting or brindle pattern in the undercoat. Wargs are not known for their intelligence and often waste their time trying to eat Centaurs, which ends in their deaths.

The tiger warg is a smaller, more amiable version of the regular warg. Their snouts are longer, yet still fearsome and they have an overall more slender build with longer tails.

    Lehoia

Known as the spotted lion in common, the Lehoia live in the desert of Solanum. They have a body as large as a tiger, but look like maneless lions with dull semi-circle and fully closed spots. They are considered dangerous even though some young men hunt them down as a sign of coming of age. It is illegal to sell or trade them, yet their furs and young crop up all over the world.

    Musker

A musker is a broad term for an over-sized lizard. They come in many shapes and sizes and are often used for transport through the desert of Solanum. The Bizardun Musker is the most commonly used for sand cruisers and resembles a giant bearded dragon. Other muskers include the Garaztatu, which resembles the basilisk, or water dragon and used for single person mounts and the Borroka which is much like a monitor lizard and used to combat or guarding things.

    Mammoths

These gigantic elephant like creatures are covered in thick, coarse fur and live in the harsh cold lands of Crysis and Zheniya. Their faces grow up to two sets of enormous, sharp tusks as well as a formidable trunk. Foolish men seek to kill them for their tusks, but more often then not die in the harsh environment, or are trampled to death before they're able.
