All people have spirits. Each and everyone receives their martial spirit at the Spirit Awakening Ceremony at age 6. During Tang San's time, everyone receive help from the Spirit Hall. But after the fall of Spirit Hall, people organize their own awakening. Nowadays, we go to Spirit Pagoda, located in every city and town, be to awaken. People who have essence when their martial spirit has awakened can train to become soul masters.
On some rare occasions, the essence has already reached the highest level when the spirit first awakens. Twin Martial spirits is also a rare occasion. These people are born with 2 martial souls. People with twin spirits usually have Innate Full Spirit Power. There are exceptions. These are those who inquire their second martial spirits artifactually or by intelligent spirit beast after their Spirit Awakening.
It is a rare ability that most people doesn´t have . With Twin Spirits, the Spirit master can have 18 spirit rings, nine per spirit essence, and 19 if they become god. Which is still something that has only ever occured twice.
In soul lands history there has been cases where the body can't take the spirit rings added onto both spirit essences and has killed the user. It is also dangerous to the body if the two spirit essences posses opposing attributes, if they clash within the body.
A Spirit Master with Twin Spirits can't use them at the same time, but there are exception. There are also twin spirits that are weaker than the other.
