    ➠ DISTRICTS

    FbIEdSa.png
    〚As of X112〛

Step City is located on a remote artificial island in the middle of an unknown ocean. It was originally built as an isolated research facility in order to test the longterm effects of different low-frequency electromagnetic radiation on inhabitants. It's unknown what ocean it's located in, and is far off the mainland. The original experiment conducted on the island had it divided into three main districts: The Purple District, Orange District, and the Research District, which served as the island's control-group and hub for the scientists. Since then, the island has been taken over by the two main factions, Funk Mafia and the UG, taking over Purple and Orange respectively. The Research District is inhabited by Squares, a factionless group largely made up of jamdeaf individuals.

On the west side of Lightning Street, the Purple District is the domain of Funk Mafia, zealous, stuffy sticklers. The architecture is clean and organized, with influences ranging from neoclassical to post modern, with an obvious art deco flare. Personality reflected in the bold colour choices and stark contrast of its most famous clubs.

Located to the east of Lightning Street, the Orange District is the turf of the UG, one of the two major factions of Step City. The Orange District is roughly the same size as the Purple District, and favours orange architecture and open, blocky shapes, with the occasional flare for eco brutilism.

Also called the Grey District or Square District, this zone was where the original Control Group for the STEP Project resided. In the centre is Step Tower, a now-abandoned building that houses the radio antennae that caused the Vibe effect in the first place. No one is able to enter the building as it requires two key cards to unlock. As part of the 'deal' when the Factions split, one card is held by the head of Funk Mafia... The other by the head of the UG.

Located at the southern most tip of the island is a large concrete depot for train carts and trollies. It's largely innascessible, only the Lightning Street trolly line runs down that way. What surrounds it are mostly rumours: it's the HQ of the Morris Dancers. Or the Banditos as a whole. Or ghosts.

  • THE ANNEXED DISTRICT

A defunct district, this was the name given to the now-defunct southern-most part of the Orange District, east of Lightning Street. Originally Orange territory, in X108, it was captured by the FM, and the club that oversaw it--The OPP--was converted to The Hub, and taken over by Agatha. And so it remained for four long years.

In X111, during a Halloween Night Market held in the Annexed District, a brawl broke out. This culminated in a free-for-all that saw FM, UG, and Banditos alike taking territory, until--in the middle of the chaos--UG was able to wrestle back control of The Hub from Agatha.

The Stronghold--now called The OPP once more--returned to UG hands, but left the remaining area splintered into microdistricts owned by FM, Dito, and UG. Finally, in X113, UG launched a coordinated attack to retake the remaining area, and the Annexed District finally fell back into UG hands.
  • ➠ PUBLIC TRANSIT

    SKYTRAIN
The main means of fast travel in Step City is the skytrain system. This consists of rails elevated to about the height of a two-floor building, so that they're separate from ground-level tram rails and pedestrian walkways. Where the elevation of the city changes, portions of the skytrain can dip to ground and underground levels, with stations either above ground or underground.

The skytrain crosses districts, connection Purple, Orange and Grey conveniently. It's the only straightforward way of crossing Lightning Street (sans just walking), and although the trains themselves are neutral territory, faction grunts may patrol the terminal stations.

The stations are spaced out, and only located at essential hubs and city centres. The skytrain system is meant for speedy travel to downtown cores, with the tram system used to take you the rest of the way to suburban neighbourhoods. Each station is often the terminal point of several trams.

    TRAMS
The light rail system of Step City, each District has its own tram system, and none of the trams cross Lightning Street. The only exception is the Grease Lightning Rail, that runs right down Lightning Street, from the Research District to the End Terminal.

Trams run on imbedded tracks at ground-level, and aren't able to travel off of these routes unless new tracks are constructed.

    VEHICLES
There are no easy means of upkeep for automotive in Step City, so vehicles these days are exceedingly rare and most streets have been taken over by foot-traffic.

Mopeds, motorcycles, and scooters are the main personal vehicles that are still in use. What multiple-occupancy vehicles remain, are usually tied up in ride-sharing and transportation/moving companies, where they can be maintained by one of the few mechanics that remain.

    MAINTENANCE
The tram and skytrain systems are maintained by a team of bots that date back from the island's inception. How they're all still operational is its own mystery, but most residents understand that it's in their best interest not to mess with the droids, and risk the public transit system falling apart.

Human mechanics are in high demand, with less knowledge being passed on generation to generation. Sourcing parts is another headache, as Mr Vendy Tech is limited to fabricating items large enough to fit out of their slots.
