    SC Origins
    • Grand Experiment:
      Step City is set vaguely 100 years in the future on a an isolated island city. The STEP Project was originally sold as the housing project of the future!, but was secretly a massive science experiment conducted on it's unknowing citizen-subject. Roughly 25 years before the RP, the city was completely cut off from the world without warning. (Timeline)
    • V-Day
      Shortly after the island was cut off, many suddenly gained magical abilities (known as Vibe) completely unique to each individual, as well as a fanatical love of dance and music, in a world-changing event Known as V-Day. The source is still active; many born after V-Day will develop vibe. (More on Vibe)
      • Vibe
        Vibe and dance feed each other. Individuals gravitate to specific personal dance and music styles, which manifests their specific abilities when they perform to them. Strong vibe users have innately strong musical & dance ability. Vibe strength also comes with a fanatic addiction to music, and passion verging on compulsion to dance.
        Proficient users of Vibe are known as Steppers. Those unlucky few who are completely unable to use Vibe or dance are called Jamdeaf, and are on the bottom rung of society.
      • Anything with the ability to register sound can be affected by vibe- this includes animals and certain machines.

    Faction Conflict
    • Step City's main conflict stems from the ongoing struggle between the Funk Mafia (led by Don Nina) and the UG (led by Steve-O 'The Rizz') for supremacy over the Island. One of the greatest ongoing causes of the tension between the two factions are residual grudges from the War of 99, a single day, incredibly brutal city-wide war in which both Faction's founders perished, along with a vast portion of the city's population.
      • Characters do not need to be aligned with a faction, but no one on the island is unaware or unaffected by the conflict.
        Unaligned characters are knows as Squares, and may find their lives more difficult as second-class nobodies. Dancers who are found cheating are branded Roller Banditos, and are pariahs within the city. (More on Factions)
    • The city is separated into 3 districts: Purple, Orange, and Grey. Purple is claimed by the Funk Mafia, Orange by the UG, and Grey, also known as the Square or Research district, has become a neutral grounds, and slum haven to the unaligned. (Map)
    • The technology of Step City is extremely advanced, maintaining the city infrastructure, providing food and medical services for the population, as well as judging and moderating dance battles. Large vehicles are uncommon, but public transit exists.
      • Robots includes Mr. Vendies, which provides basic food and clothes, Dr. Vendies, which provide miraculous healing to those who can pay, and DJ Bots, which provide music, moderation, and monetary prizes for throwdowns between steppers. (More about Vendies)
      • Vendies require money, known as Cred, to perform all but the most basic functions. Without cred, Mr. Vendies will only provide water and vendy bars, a super gross and nearly inedible food bar containing just enough energy to sustain life. Without cred, Dr. Vendies will only provide minimal assistance to those on the verge of death.
    • Conflicts within the city are settled through dance or music battles known as throwdowns. For friendly matches, a neutral judge (city provided DJ Bot) will decide the victor and award monetary prizes, known as Cred. Otherwise, the two parties will dance until one side concedes, is put out of commission, or is killed. Stakes, if any, are offered at the beginning of each match. (More on Throwdowns)
    • Due to the specialized nature of vibe and the island's isolation, Step City has developed some very specific oddities, including vibe specific drugs, urban legends and stories, slang, card games, diseases, it's own social media networks, and religious cults.

    ➠ OOC RULES
    1. Standard RPR rules apply to both forums and Discord.
    2. Group is 18+. No minors in the RPR group nor on the Discord. Do not lie about your age.
    3. Expect themes of drug use, violence, and some provocative content. That said, there are hard rules and prohibited content (see below).
    4. Respect consent & boundaries: This RP has strong battle elements. Godmodding is not allowed; attacks are 'attempts', not gaurenteed hits. You cannot main/torture/kill another character without that player's consent. Always checkwith your partner about mature content before rping it.
    5. No harm against minors: While the RP deals with some heavy subject matter AND children do exist canonically in the City, no RP dealing with the violence against or sexual content involving minors is allowed. This includes but is not limited to: Paedophilia, romantic age gaps or dating ANY underaged characters counting as statutory rape, attacking or physically harming children, or drug use. This is also extended to any 'technical minor'--that is, any character who might by chance 'look older than they are' because of vibe, or 'look younger than they are' because of vibe. The wording of this rule may not cover all possible scenarios, and moderators will make the final call.
    6. NSFW Content: Our RPR and Discord are both rated 18+, but we ask to be respectful and clearly mark NSFW content and keep it to the designated sections. Please keep explicit material censored and tagged at the start if posted to the RPR forums, and mark Discord-channels NSFW where appropriate. A quick warning is all that's needed.
    7. This is a combination Art and Text-based roleplay taking place across Discord and RPR. Threads can be started on either platform. Some players RP via drawing comics or typed posts. Please respect both styles. Ask before posting in a style different than the opening post, even in Open RP! OP may want to keep an RP all one medium. If you are the OP, please mark your opening post with the preferred medium.
    8. We encourage players to RP in the Discord server or on the RPR forums. We strive to be an open community. With obvious exceptions for NSFW, or any scenes one doesn't feel comfortable RPing in public.

  • ➠ CHARACTER CREATION RULES
    1. Character limits: 3 Characters Max
      There's a lot of enthusiasm for playing a character in every faction, but we would like to limit your number of played characters to 3 for now. Focus on individual character development and connecting to others!
    2. Lore Age Restriction
      Step City was cut off from the rest of the world 26 years ago- including immigration! Characters younger than 26 years must have been born on the island. Characters older than 26 years will have been part of the initial study, either choosing to come to Step City as adults or traveling there as children.
    3. Human characters only
      Humans only, with the exception of the occasional droid (see next rule). Vibes cannot permanently transform your character into an animal/alien/fursona. See the vibe section for more info. The rp is set on a futuristic but parallel earth.

  • ➠ VIBE RULES
    **This is just a short overview of the Rules for vibes. For mechanics, ideas, and a more thorough breakdown, check out the Vibes Page.
    1. Power Level
      Power levels should be even for every stepper, unless a player wishes to be intentionally weak. Bosses and Leaders power levels are leagues above regular steppers. This should be taken into consideration when designing and writing your character, and when opposing Bosses or Leaders.
    2. Drawbacks
      Vibes should have limits and drawbacks, even if it's just a straightforward Pokemon Weakness. RP isn't about winning!
    3. Multiple Vibes
      In general, steppers are not allowed multiple vibe powers. Vibes can branch towards related uses, but have to roughly fall under the same umbrella. Please run new vibe branches by Mods to avoid powercreep.
    4. Transformations
      Vibes are powered by kinetic energy and soundwaves. Vibe effect that would make it harder or impossible to dance are strongly discouraged. Powers that altar one's physical appearance are limited (no anthros, etcetera). The exception is the general 'youth' that comes with particularly strong steppers.
    5. Dice
      Dice aren't required for fights, but a ruleset can be used if both parties agree to it.

  • ➠ Importing Preexisting OCS
    Designing your Character to fit the World

    Imports are absolutely allowed!

    Literally anything can be adapted to this original SciFi dance world. However, Step City is a unique setting, and we ask that you make sure your character is built FOR this world, rather than trying to import all of an OC's preexisting features & abilities from another universe.

    A good way to reshape your existing OC for Step City is to rewind and break them down a bit more to bare bones.
    Rebuilding with a focus on dance stlye/music preference/genre aesthetic before vibe effect can be a fantastic way to make them more at home here.

    If your OC previously had many powers, consider focusing on one facet and creating a vibe based around that rather than trying to use every power.

  • ➠ APPING YOUR CHARACTER

    1. Create your character's page on RPR.
      (Note: This is public!)
    2. Go to the main Step City group page here. At the veeeery top right is a 'gear' icon. Click for a dropdown and choose to "Join with a Character' or 'App Another Character'

    3. Wait for Mod Approval or feedback!
    4. Make their profile with Discord Tupper
    5. TIME TO RP! Open an RP Discord thread for them, or join an existing one!
