    𝄠

Step City is a soft-science fiction setting that takes place an unspecified amount of time in the future. Current-day happenings can be referenced in a historical context, but suffice to say nobody in the confines of the RP would have lived through them. Step City is also RPed in 'real time'; that is, time passes at a normal pace. For every year that passes OOCly, a year also passes ICly.

Because Step City has been going since 2011, a lot of time has passed. The RP began in 2011, in the year X100, and the current year in Step City is X113.

  • ➠ START

    • X071 The S.T.E.P. Project begins.
Super Scientist Jamal Bastamov lays claim to a remote island near [UNDISCLOSED LOCATION]. Work begins on the Study and Testing of Experimental Populations project.

    • X079 City construction completed, subjects are moved into the city.
Construction completes on all infrastructure and research facilities. Thousands of average people and families are invited to live on this newly developed island.

Free living arrangements, food, and healthcare are offered in exchange for participation in the STEP project. Subjects are divided into three groups - Test Group 1 in the Purple District, Test Group 2 in the Orange District, and the smaller Control Group in the Research Pavilion.

    • X084 Step City is cut off from the world. Mass exposure of the population to low level vibe frequencies begins.
The Bastamov Research Tower begins transmitting two frequencies of radio waves. Both test groups show growth in dance and musical talent, but nothing else. The project reaches it's desired population and outside recruitment stops. Without informing the subjects, all transport in and out of the island is disabled aside from the underwater tram station to the south, usable only with appropriate keycards.

    • X086 V-Day
Frustrated by the lack of results, Bastamov increases the power of the frequency. It went horribly right.

Bastamov was killed immediately, along with those in the upper floors of Bastamov Research Tower. The remaining scientists mutated into funky fresh dancing fiends and jive soul brothers. The entire population also feel these effects, to varying degrees. The ground trembles under the feet of thousands of dancers. Buildings collapse to the booming bass. They call it V-Day

    • X087 Chaos ensues
Within a year, all facilities and business that are unrelated to dancing and the night life have shut down. Some artisan chefs, tailors, etc, remain in business due to patronage of the wealthy. Vending machines and other automated apparatus continue to function despite lack of human maintenance crews.

    • X089 The Scientist's Rebellion: Famine! Battle to save the music! James Cornell and Greg Dorian become heroes.
The few scientists unaffected by the Vibe make plans to stop it entirely, and attempt to restore order to the city. They cut off power and supplies to the most unruly parts of town, resulting in city wide starvation and a severe lack of tunes as vendies go offline for the first time in the city's history. Two scientists, James Cornell and Greg Dorian, undermine their plans and restore power and food to the city. They become heroes to the population. Cornell stays in the Purple District to build the Mothership Discotheque, Dorian to the Orange District to create the night club The Deck.

    • X090 The Funk Mafia is founded by James Cornell.
The Funk Mafia is founded by James "The Don" Cornell with the purpose of building their own regime of elite Steppers while stomping out the remaining scientists.

    • X093 The UG is founded by Greg Dorian.
The research district falls to Funk Mafia advances. The Squares and Jamdeaf in the Purple District are exiled to the research district to make room for more discotheques. Some go to the Orange District. Finished with the threat of The Man, the Funk Mafia turns to their own interests, mainly improving life of the elite. Greg Dorian builds up The UG as the resistance against the growing oppression of the Funk Mafia. He renames his club UGHQ.

    • X098 The Green Thumbs.
      WIPWIPWIP

    • X099 The War of '99
After months of escalating violence and skirmishes all throughout the city, The Funk Mafia and The UG have a final, large-scale confrontation. The largest Dance-Off in history occurs in the neutral ground of the Research District. The dance battle started at sundown and went on well past dawn, until both Dorian and Cornell collapsed and perished, along with a vast portion of the city's population. The strongest survivors on each side claimed leadership and retreated, agreeing on a ceasefire.

    • X099 Aftermath of '99
The Funk Mafia is taken over by Don Bonita, James' Cornell's right hand woman and immensely powerful gravity stepper. Don Bonita moves the Funk Mafia headquarters to her mid-air club, the Mothership Discotheque.

The UG leadership is filled by Steven O'Rizzle, Dorian Greg's protégé, a seemingly young child and vibe genius who could control soundwaves.

Rumors surrounding the circumstances of their ascencion, that the new leaders fought bravely at their predecesor's sides, were perhaps involved in coups and shadowy organizations, or even chosen by the GROOVE itself to lead the city to the future, have run rampant ever since.

The War of '99, or just 99, is remembered by all in the form of viscious lingering grudges and deep trauma, and of course, annual rememberance parties as the city rebuilds.

  • ➠ ORIGINAL RP

    • evJpBBi.pngX100 (OOC: 2011, RP start) + Thriller Virus
Both factions are still recouping from the Dance War of '99, recruiting and training new members. It’s only a matter of time until one side decides to strike again… Although large scale fighting between the factions has quieted down, but an unknown agent unleashes the 'Thriller Virus' on the population (A shortlived semi-canonical virus that turned people into funky dance zombies)

    • X101 Solar Flares
On April 1st, something went horribly wrong with the Vibe (Solar Flare event). Vibes changed in form, power, and function. Powers went out of control, bosses became jamdeaf, jamdeaf became gods, all before the next burst of solar energy scrambled everything again! No one was immune! For months, the city was in chaos.
      (More Info Here)

    • X101 Solar Flares: Faction Leader Steven and Bonita's Battle
Following a day of extremely destructive earthquakes, the sky appeared to tear open.
Under the effects of the Flares, Don Bonita appeared to lose control of her powers and possibly her mind. Very few know the truth. Witnessed by many high in the air above the Mothership Discotheque, a fight broke out between herself and Steven o'Rizzle.

Following this event, both Leaders apparently retreated to their HQs, Steven withdrawing from the public eye and Bonita becoming more and more erratic in her actions and orders. Rumours swirl that Steven, Bonita or both are dead.

After a summer of confusion and destruction, the flares finally ended, but all was not right in Step City.
      The Flashback event begins....

      1tdL6ET.png
    • X102 Flashback!
(Flashback! event). Just as the Solar Flares fades, a strange new phenomenon began causing city dwellers to vividly relive their own memories, sometimes sharing life-like hallucinations with others, or even regressing mentally and physically. Flashbacks could last minutes to weeks, sometimes trapping unlucky souls in a loop of painful memories.
Weeks stretched into months as the Flashbacks continued from x101 well into x102, driving many Steppers into madness. Steppers struggled to find the source of this phenomenon, which seemed somehow connected to the Leaders' battle.

Steven and Don Bonita remain removed from society. Don Bonita makes few public appearances, and the Bosses are left to keep order. Steven continues to make occasional, sporadic appearances, usually at a distance.

  • ➠ EIGHT YEAR TIMESKIP

    • X103 Don Bonita is attacked
The Mothership Discotheque is attacked in the dead of night by DOVE, where a ferocious battle takes place. Don Bonita is injured and withdraws completely from the public eye; during the battle, the Mothership Discotheque raises into the air where it remains, spinning, for years to come. The Don refuses to speak to anyone, bosses included, except Nina. Nina steps in as Regent, Don Bonita's representative, and communicates her orders.

    • X104 G-Reg/others appointed
Steven withdraws into his experiments with building bots, with much of the work of running the Faction falling to the MCs. Finally, in one catastrophic accident, steven is killed. The UG goes through a tumultuous period with several Leaders taking his place before stepping down. The most memorable of this bunch being the particularly loud G-Reg.

    • X106 Don Bonita dies, Don Nina steps in
During the dead of night, the Mothership Discotheque is attacked again. Nobody knows what happened, only that come morning--it was gone from the sky. Rumours spread that it flew out over the ocean before disappearing. Some less credible sources talk about a Kraken rising out of the water and dragging the ship out of the sky to its murky depths. Either way, Don Bonita is presumed dead, and Don Nina has no choice but to step in officially as the FM's new Leader.

    • X108 OPP is captured by Funk Mafia
Since Steven's departure, the UG was left weakened. A revolving door of new Leaders left the faction demoralized and defenseless, the MCs doing their best to keep things together but eventually crumbling. The Old Guard of Funk Mafia--those loyal to FUNK and DISCO--took this opportunity to attack, taking the club and surrounding district closest to Lightning Street--OPP. This marked the first time one Faction had crossed Lightning Street to take territory. The OPP has since been renamed to The Hub, and remains a part of Funk Mafia, with Agatha Perry promoted to Boss to lead the venue.

This brings us up to present day.
  • ➠ CURRENT DAY

    • X110 (OOC: 2021)
      • Steven Returns - Through mysterious circumstances, Steven returns 'from the dead'. At first things are kept under wraps as he learns what has happened to the UG in his absence.
Eventually, Steven makes an Official Announcement of his return.
        ...And confronts Don Nina.
      • With Steven's return, tensions build surrounding The Hub, the UG's captured ex-club. The UG was left in disarray during his absence. With his return, comes a sense of Community, and the UG is once again unifying to take back their club.

    • X111 (OOC: 2022)
      • Hide Miyagawa is promoted to Boss, making the total number THREE after FM's expansion into UG in X108.
      • Halloween: The annexed former-south of UG breaks out in an all-out brawl following an altercation at a night-market. All factions end up involved in a free-for-all, and The Hub is torn apart as districts are broken into sub-districts. As the dust clears, The Hub is returned to the UG as The OPP! But the land surrounding it is broken into half a dozen sub-zones, each claimed by FM, UG, or Bandito...
      • During the fallout, two FM Bosses are lost. Hide is blamed for the mess, and is stripped of his rank. Agatha, having lost her Club, loses her status as well and enters early retirement.
    • X112 (OOC: 2023)
      • Don Nina's blowup over Hide proves her more and more unstable... But there might be a new rising star. There's whispers of something called the Chrome Coalition.
      • Although the Hub was returned to the UG, the southern half of the Orange District remained divided. Dubbed 'The Annexed District', it became, for a moment, a chaotic patchwork of multi-faction zones. Energetic--progressive? And anarchic, as--for the first time--the Roller Banditos held Turf. But weakened by constant border clashes, the brutal hand the UG quickly brought the fractured zones back under the fold of Orange once more.
      • But perhaps this brief taste of Power has sparked something in the Banditos? ...
    • X113 Current Time (OOC: 2024)
      • Present Day: Ongoing.
