Miyo lay in the corner of his cell, feeling the all too familiar presence of hopelessness. It had been his constant companion for several years now. How many had it been again? He asked himself. He supposed it had only been two by the marks on the wall.
The sound of footsteps roused him from his thoughts as he looked up into the dark, expressionless face of his captor. The creature, because that was all it could be called, set his food down and slid it under the bars to Miyo. The boy's eyes watered at the horrendous stench coming from the plate, and his nose scrunched up in utter disgust before he forced himself over to the plate and began eating the slop with his fingers, as they would not even allow him the simple courtesy of table ware.
Once finished he crawled back to his corner with what little strength they had left him. He closed his eyes knowing the nightmares would come soon, and then in the morning he would be forced to work.
