Black combat boots sounded on the tiled floor, followed by the click-clacking of a dog's unkempt nails. Jackie's green eyes where vigilant, a nail bat in his right hand and an almost empty backpack over his exposed freckled shoulders. His combat boots slapping the ground harshly. He grunted, the dog on his left ceasing all movement. They stopped and they listened, this was what they had been doing for a while now. Jackie didn't know much about these zombies' but, he had seen them, and he’d been chased by them. He would have been dead if it weren't for his dog, Will. He sighed, not wanting to think about it anymore and grunted at the St. Bernard and they'd began walking again. They were hungry. They hadn't been able to get their hands on any real food for a while. Jackie couldn't recall how long he and Will had stayed in that god forsaken room. He could still hear the ravenous clawing and the gurgling of choked back screams from the other side of the door. All Will did for those first few hours where wine, Jackie couldn't get him to be quiet. He twisted his fingers around the bat as they stepped toward the first isle in the grocery store. His stomach grumbling appropriately and Will whining in response.

For a moment the grocery store appeared empty. Not a single sound was heard other than the sound of the man's boots and his dog's paws. It was quiet, eerily so and as he reached the first isle, all he would notice was the flickering of a few lights on the ceiling and the state of the shelves.
Most were nearly empty as well, a few cans of beans left behind amidst some other vegetables. A bit further there was some bread on the shelf, but not the fresh kind. It looked like fresh bread hadn't been baked here for days and the smell that lingered in the store wouldn't really cause any hunger. Not for those that were alive at least, although the dead could perhaps fill their stomach with whatever it was some bodies at the end of the isle contained.
Most of those bodies were drained with bullets, a clear sign that these people had been slaughtered by the army rather than torn apart by the zombies. A single one here and there, further down the store would show chunks of flesh that were ripped out. Still, the lack of movement remained so far and there was no human or zombie in sight. It seemed that most had taken what they desired and left what they deemed unneeded.

Jackie looked over the mostly empty shelves, his unexpressive face now marketing a small frown. Walking passed the shelves, his eyes going over each row, desperate for some form of food. The sight of blood stealing his attention for a split second. His hunger now at the back of his mind. His gaze splayed across the floor much like the blood that covered each floor tile. His eyes seemed to be pleading as he focused on the bodies that laid about the isle. Emerald tears trapped behind his eyes. His boots stopped moving for a moment, just for a short glance. Not bothering to wipe the tears from his eyes as walked closer to them, his boots becoming heavier with each step. This wasn’t the first time the brute had seen a body and it wouldn’t be the last but, he felt it hard to move from this spot without paying some respect. It made him think back to that room and his grandmother. Jackie felt it cruel to leave them like this but, he understood. “No time”, he mumbled. He stood over the body closest to him, a woman with bullet holes all over her. The only way he could tell it was a woman was the tattered clothing she wore. He wondered who she was, a mother? A sister? A daughter? His green eyes focused on her dead ones. There was nothing in them. Tears fell down his cheeks but, he made no sound to indicate he was upset. For Jackie the constant death would stand as a reminder. Will stood next to his owner, softly barking at him to get himself together, pawing at his boots and nudging at his hip. Jackie knew he couldn’t stick around to mourn for these strangers who lost their lives so early in whatever this was. His stomach once again trying to get his attention, this time loudly. His frown deepening with frustration. He didn't even want to eat anymore. He turns away from the bodies, silently apologizing for leaving them like this. He still needed food.

Beyond the first pile of bodies were a few more, scattered here and there and showing clearer bite marks. It was a sign that these bodies in particular were a tad fresher and that they'd been feasted on by the plague that was slowly infesting the town rather than shot by the soldiers. No bullet wounds were seen on their frames, except for on the one of an elderly man who had a single bullet wound in his head and a gun near his right hand. It seemed that this man in particular had chosen to die faster than the zombies would let him, which would've likely saved him a great amount of pain.
More shelves filled the rest of the store, one more empty than the other and luckily it seemed like overall, it was easy enough to fill a few bags with food if one wished to. There was soup, toast and salami as well as bottles of water and some tubes of syrup and hazelnut paste. Aside from more food, there were also enough products left for self care. While people had clearly been taking what they could carry, not all of the store had been raided and in the latter isles, there was more to be found. The reason for this was probably the fact that most would've had a full bag by the time they were halfway.
The buzzing sound of the door rang through the store and it opened to a group of youths that were armed to the teeth and carrying guns, knives and makeshift swords that looked like they'd once been decorations in a chinese restaurant.
The four of them seemed to be in their early twenties and they were as loud and obnoxious as they appeared they would be. They loudly chatted about call of duty and how this was the best thing that could possibly happen to them in their sophomore year. One of them even fist-bumped another when the other claimed that they'd totally outlive this and that they had trained years for this, as if this was all a game to them and real lives weren't at stake.
They skipped by most of the empty isles and soon found themselves near the shelf with the energy drinks, letting out cheers over their found treasure and celebrating some kind of made up victory. The tallest one said that those cans were bonus points and that they'd be able to outrun anyone, to which the shortest agreed even though he joked about his own short legs.
The middle two seemed to argue back and forth about which taste they would take but eventually, they filled their bags in haste, a few cans falling here and there and making loud clanging noises as they hit the floor, one or two bursting open in miniature explosions and covering the isle in sugary goodness.

Jackie continued onward through the bodies; his innocent eyes focused in front of him instead of on the ground. He didn’t want to look at all the blood, the one body was enough. Will however, walked with eyes intensely focused on the bodies around them, some of his white fur at the bottom of his paws becoming wet with blood from puddles that he passed through. The dog's long nails picking up the red from the floor, that could leave less than cute puppy prints behind him. Jackie looked beside him at the isles, still trying not to look at the ground. His face held a look of surprise. He thought what he’d seen before was it, guess he wouldn’t be going hungry after all. He and Will looked through the isle, hallelujah ringing in their minds. Jackie stuffed things into his bookbag. Beans, granola, water and even toothpaste. Jackie even took a packet of toothbrushes, as he ignored some of the blood he found on a can of beans.
Just as Jackie turned to take a little more food and maybe try and find some hair ties, the door to the grocery store made a buzzing noise indicating a presence. Both Will and Jackie froze at the sound, not daring to let out breath. Jackie heard four sets of feet making way around the store, all together. He gulped and peeked out of the isle he and Will stood in. There were four of them, all looking to be around Jackie’s age. Jackie may have greeted them or said hi, maybe even share the things he’d found, if not for how intimidating and scary they looked. To top it off they spoke in such harsh ways. Jackie could almost barf out of nervousness as they

The young men continued to fill their bag with the cans and as some exploded on the floor, laughter filled the store caused by the two that had been arguing about the tastes earlier. The tallest one shook his head at their antics and soon their bags were piling out, the shelf with energy cans nearly empty.
The harsh ways in which they spoke continued as the topic changed to them discussing a freshmen they'd seen around the school before the army had come, and how she'd been looking "mighty fine" in that purple flowered dress. They said how they wanted to tap that and even did a little dance with it, making utter fools about themselves and being loud as usual. They were utterly oblivious to the fact they were no longer alone in there, and only the shortest one of the four seemed to notice the presence of another even if he couldn't particularly see Jackie from where they stood.
"Yo, I think someone's there." He claimed and the others stopped what they were doing and turned to him, confusion drawn on their faces as they frowned.
"Nobody's here, shut your ass up." The oldest replied, but the other two immediately started arguing about it as well. One claimed they could feel a presence while the other said that he was probably slowly losing his sanity. The banter continued until the tallest sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, after which he cleared his throat and shouted.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are!" He called, only waiting a second before turning to his companions.
"See? Ain't nobody here, you foo-"
His statement was interrupted by the loud opening of a door in the back as it was pushed against the pile of bodies and the stench of rotting reached the noses of the four as creatures spawned from it, gnarling and making their way to the group of youths. For each of them there was a zombie, smelly and covered in blood and pieces of flesh with bones sticking out from their own flesh. One of them even had a dislocated jaw but didn't let that stop him as it made it's way to the newfound meal.
"Oh shit!" The shortest shouted and he turned on his heel in an attempt to bolt out of the store. The others allowed him to run as they stood there, two frozen in shock while the tallest took his shotgun and aimed.
"It's gametime." He snarled, and he attempted to walk forward and shoot one of the zombies just as he slipped on the floor that was covered in the energy drink, which sent him toppling over, dragged down by the weight of his bag.

Jackie was alarmed, they knew he was here. What would he do if they started looking for him would he have to kill them? He definitely didn’t want that, he couldn’t kill another human. His eyes wandered back to Will who kept barking at him to come with him. What if he was caught running though? It would only take a second for one of the strangers to aim and fire a hole through him. Jackie didn’t want to do anything. he didn’t even want to move. But he knew staying in once place for too long would get him killed in this situation but, so could running. Jackie really didn’t feel like getting his brain blew from his head. Jackie huffed and stood up, ready to run but, before he could a foul odor and the sound of the dead filled his sense. And with a loud gunshot Jackie never took a glance behind him as he raced toward Will and hiked him up in his arms, bat in hand. His boots meeting the concrete of the outside
His emerald eyes searched the outside for any danger while his back was still exposed. His boots beating the ground, his head down and eyes up. The air was cold, and it was dark outside. No streetlights to light his way. He cursed himself for not looking around for a flashlight in the store. He was running around blindly with a giant dog and a halfway filled backpack on his back. He thought about just turning back around and taking his chances playing hide and seek with the strangers in the grocery store, at least he could see. Suddenly it seemed as if the sun had risen. White light covered Jackie's back, casting a large shadow in front of him. He turned around, his giant frame being covered by the headlights of the truck in front of him. A red headed woman leaning out the trucks window. She motioned hurriedly for him to get in, yelling about a crowd of the dead. Jackie was hesitant, he tried to search the woman with his eyes but, nothing would come of it. Her face was shrouded with shadow. He sighed, not wanting to risk if what she said was true. He shoved himself and Will in the bed of the truck with a few other survivors. He kept hus head down and to himself.

The shortest of the four had made it's way out of the store before Jackie had and had taken off into the street, running as far and fast from the grocery store as he could. The others had remained in the store even as Jackie took off, the arguing two doing their very best to help their friend get up as the zombies approached. The two of them wanted to run as well and would as soon as their friend stood up. After they'd seen Jackie run, they knew it wouldn't be a good idea to stay there.
The tallest managed to get up with his friends' help and managed to shoot the zombie that was closest to them. The others followed his example and shot the zombies before turning and sprinting out of the store. Once all four zombies had been shot through the head, the tallest followed them, only to have their exit blocked by two more zombies that seemed to have appeared out of thin air. The men stared at each other in alarm, knowing they were slowly running out of bullets as they hadn't managed to find more ammo yet. Confusion was growing too, as the arrival of the zombies hadn't been announced by the buzzing of the door. No, the door had only buzzed twice when the others ran out, so how did these zombies get here?
Soon enough, that question was answered for them as before they could choose to shoot the two zombies, movement could be seen behind them as well, where the pile of bodies had disappeared and become another group of walkers that was quickly closing in on them. A shot was fired, then another as blood was splattered onto the windows before screaming was heard and one of the men fell against the door of the grocery store, which was pushed open by the weight of his body.
As the door was opened, a terrifying sight was seen by those outside of the store. A single zombie digged into the men that had opened the door for them while others climbed over it and made it's way into the street, moving towards the truck just like the other group of zombies was doing.
