She had spent hours organizing the shelves, book by book. Nothing was in the right place. The library was not often used these days, with everyone having their eBooks and technology. So few people cared to check out a hard cover or paperback. There was no excuse for the disarray. Nothing was in the right place. History mixed with Science. Non-Fiction mixed with Fantasy. Romance with Horror.
"I swear I did all of this already last time I was here. Why do they keep screwing it all up? Who else works here that nothing is where it should be? I could see a stray book or two, but entire SECTIONS of the library are wrong. That's not where it's supposed to be, this ISN'T HOW IT WAS!"
The manic girl had been on a tear for hours now, fighting through tears, anger, regret....feelings coming and going. The dim computer in the library corner was still on, a message about an account suspension for violating terms and conditions by using profanity in the chat program burning itself into the screen. The hapless woman in the sweater and skirt, graying hair tied in a bun, lying on the floor next to the spot where she had tried to shoo the girl out at closing time. She was still breathing, though she would have a nasty knock on her head from having hit it on a table when she went down; though she probably wouldn't be awake for hours after having her psychic energy ripped away.
As for Sera, at least that usually would have meant a place to sleep for the night out of the weather. Only, this night, sleep was not coming to her. Books were scattered all over the place from every shelf, while the raven haired young woman continued trying to fix the shelves as if trying to piece together a shattered glass vase, as she was moving entire sections of the library around to some form she had once seen in her memories.
"I swear, if they do this AGAIN..... they keep.....trying to ERASE you. Keep pretending that just because.....you're not here....means they can just change everything like you NEVER existed! You....YOU were the librarian, mom. You were in charge of all of the books here at the academy. It's why you came. You and dad came here from Darien City to help run the new academy. Was you....and me...and Tawny...you came here for something better for us all. And.....and I didn't like it at first. But....it grew on me. It really did. We were happy, most of the time. You were happy. Daddy had his big office and responsibilities and you had your books and....they tried to CHANGE all of that. You DIED for your job...for the academy...for all of us and they wanted to CHANGE everything soon as you were gone! But I'm gonna put it all back the way it's supposed to be again! THEY AREN'T GONNA TAKE YOU AWAY FROM ME AGAIN!"
Morning was approaching, as the daytime Librarian, along with a couple gentlemen there for an early morning delivery of new books had arrived. Startled that the door hadn't been locked, she and the delivery guys would peer about, not taking long to find the other librarian on the floor. Her hair was flowing down now, and her sweater was missing, with her only wearing her undershirt at this point.
"Ellen!? Ellen!? Are you alright!? Oh my god...call for help we need an ambulance!"
"I'm fine. I was just sorting the books. What's wrong?"
Sera emerged now, having finished a good chunk of her task, wearing the unconscious woman's hairclip, sweater and glasses, causing the other librarian to shriek in surprise and fear.
"WHO ARE YOU!? WHY ARE YOU WEARING ELLEN'S THINGS!? CALL THE POLICE!"
One of the delivery men would indeed be calling for help, while the other picked up an odd looking hand sewn doll that was sitting on the desk...one that looked like a caricature of Sera herself, holding it up to where Sera herself could see.
"I told her to leave! Told her it was closing time, and she was still playing around on that computer. Kids, I tell you, they don't listen anymore! But it's fine! I just wanted to fix the shelves so I stayed late...."
And then, she would shudder, shaking her head rapidly, throwing off the glasses and hairclip and sweater.
"PUT HER DOWN RIGHT NOW!"
Before the baffled fellow could even respond, a sphere of negative energy was already being hurled at him, slamming the guy right through the computer desk and smashing the device on the floor. The other librarian and delivery guy would run away in fear, leaving the unstable girl to pick up her doll, stepping over the man and woman on the floor as if she didn't even see them. She was quiet now as she just slowly shambled out the front door of the library past the frightened employees, turning down the street cradling the doll.
"I'm sorry....for not wanting to be....you....for having to.....put you away sometimes so I can be.....someone who isn't you....who isn't me....but it doesn't even work right anymore....even when I'm somebody else...they just leave me again..."
