The act of summoning has fallen out of favour in the past few decades, as human technology has improved to a point that it is capable of performing most tasks which previously relied on spirits. In addition, many humans now believe that the act of binding a spirit is unethical, although opponents to this line of thought point out that the spirits of the Badlands are unintelligent and will kill all humans they are able, so they are hardly creatures to be pitied. If a spirit is released or escapes from the spell that binds it, it will often enact revenge on the humans who have trapped its will. There have been incidents where spirits have destroyed entire towns in this rampage. If a spirit's use is no longer required the usual procedure is to banish it back to the Magical Plane.

As far back as human history tells, there have always been a small number of dazed and confused spirits wandering around Altaire. These spirits appear after the sun sets and feast on any mortal flesh which crosses their path. They have consumed all wildlife. The forests are silent. Human civilisations have long been protected with magical wards which spirits cannot pass through.

There are two images: The first of a purple, spirit of aquatic appearance standing behind a human soldier, giving a salute. It is captioned: A Military-Bound Spirit Salutes.
The second is of glowing eyes, illuminating the exposed rib bones of a dog. It is captioned: A spirit eating a runaway dog.
