Unlike Altaire, where magic is a mundane part of life, the average Ziran has no magical signature, and cannot cast magic, interact with magical objects, and many spells are ineffectual upon them. Only about 2% of the population have a magic signature, and almost all of those are very weak. Magical people and objects who remain on the island for long periods of time will find their magic drained. Magic is slightly more common amongst women than men, and slightly more common from people with non-native heritage.

One of the few types of magic that is effective within the nation is necromancy, which often takes the form of organ or limb transplants. Although many outsiders consider it distasteful, for Zirans it is just a part of life.

The Ziran language is both incredibly simple and incredibly complex. It holds no linguistic root with the Common language spoken throughout Altaire, has many complex tenses, gendered nouns, and congregations making it a difficult language for the average Alt to learn. However, the writing system is very sophisticated and completely phonetic, so the average person with only a day or two of study can read and pronounce Ziran but not understand it.

The highly secluded military and the old-fashioned island of Bandar both speak distinctive and archaic dialects.

There are two images. The first of a hand, while most of it is pale, the pointer and middle finger are a darker skin tone. The caption reads: Above: A hand healed with necromancy with two distinct skin tones.

The second is of a large light-house style building, its light reflecting off the dark ocean. The caption reads: Shrine De Lune
