I'm going to rec Armored Hearts
This comic has a great, realistically casually brutal tone that comes with war. It is still pretty new, so you can and should give it a read through.

Desperate and destitute, Temir signs his life away to the military to become a mech pilot. Neurologically augmented to be the perfect tool of war, he wants nothing more than food and shelter. He has learned never to ask for too much. It’s safer inside the machine. It’s safer to be an unfeeling machine. Dancing on the edge between vulnerability and power, his new skills come at the cost of needing his mind constantly tuned and adjusted by his handler Kergat. Adael's shoes are still soaked.
Adael: I know I need to work off that debt but-- When I get some cash the very first thing I'm going to buy is a better pair of shoes.
Barame doesn't even look up from his mobile phone.
Barame: Buy?! Wow I thought you were smarter than that.
He turns to face Adael.
Barame: You going to work yourself to death like Losay?
Adael: Then tell me, what is the smart thing to do.
Barame points dramatically at the camera
Barame: We gotta go about this the right way.
