Notoriety is the experience and social status level one earns by being active in Undertow.
It is a leveling system that isn't limited to combat encounters, and can be earned by just being a regular presence.
Staff and their characters can give it to any character for any reason.
There is both Crew and Personal Notoriety.
Crew is a ship as a whole, so for example, Heartseeker and it's captain, Jesper, could each have varied levels.
It will give you bonuses to rewards, discounts during market days, as well as initiative bonuses for combat.

1-100 notoriety.

You might get discounts from merchants, and tasks give extra money reward.
Crew get bonus rewards from Quests.
Personal get 1d6 permanent HP and an initiative bonus of +2.

Known in the tavern.
Crews are given their own half priced drink day, and rests will give a 1d10 temporary HP for first encounter of the week.
Personal might find that NPCs will pay their tab. Initiative bonus of +3.
