The Tales of Illysia takes place in a fantasy setting inspired but media such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Ixalan from Magic the Gathering, Eberron the D&D, expansion, Arcane and other such works. The world is based around Steampunk / Fantasy where you can find all sorts of technological wonders mixed with magical mysteries.
Our story takes place in the Crescent Moon Isles, a collection of islands that mirror the shape of a crescent moon, mainly the story is focused in the city of Illysia an independent republic that was besieged by a faction of Dwarves called the Ironbound Übermensch a totalitarian government ruled by a dwarven emperor-god who's main reason for being is to bend all magic to their whims as dwarves in this world do not have magic themselves.
In this world merfolk are the most magically attuned species, with incredibly short lifespans they resort to the use of dark magic to extend their lives, thriving off powers and dealings with dark gods its not uncommon to see them practicing necromancy, vampirism, voodoo, blood magic and so on, it is so common in fact that undead walking the streets is a well regulated and managed branch of the former Illysian government.
The former ruling party has been disposed of after the take over of the Ironbound, a foreign empire of technologically superior Dwarves bent on the destruction of magic and all that would use it! And now separate factions fight for dominion of the city, among them one of the most powerful is a pirate alliance known as the Scourged Legion. A band of pirates both living and dead that out number any current government in the isles.
