The black plague swept across Europe in the 14th century, but it wasn't the only pandemic ravaging the lands. Those who wished to be spared turned. This coincided with a mysterious sinkhole opening in London, and so the vampires were promptly disposed of and tossed underground.
The sinkhole was not the gate to hell despite what the church told the masses, but lead to an an underground sea.
We pick up hundreds of years later, ANNO 1828. Most people down here these days either live long enough to give up, or die before making it back onto the surface. Why don't you make yourself at home, like the rest of us? So many others before you have.
Yet, despite extensive colonization, whatever lurks in the darkness largely remains unknown...
