Terminology

  • Sorted by letter, for your convenience!

    • Cave-dweller
Rude slur for everyone living in the Nether, used by those who generalize and hold prejudice mainly against the undead. More often heard above ground.

    • Judicants
A faction of assassins contracted to hunt mainly Seconds (see further below), but also other outlaws by any means necessary. Their status forgives excessive violence which otherwise would've sent them to the mines. Judicants are often Seconds themselves, only pardoned and spared to carry out the grisly task of persecuting their own kind.

    • Netherling, or Underling

Humans that have lived in the Nether for more than a few generations have adapted to the darkness. Some say that it's natural selection, but popular belief is that the Nether corrupts. The mystery is yet to be solved by someone who dares to seek answers. Though vampires remain unrivaled in their heightened senses, a netherling will have developed above-average eyesight and hearing. They're usually gaunt, with large eyes. Even older generations may develop tapetum lucidum, webbing between fingers and strange spinal growths, among other deformities.

    • Nethizen
Any permanent settler in the Nether.

    • Seconds
Refers to vampires illegally sired and hunted by Judicants. There's a sanctuary somewhere, providing respite for this marginalized and shunned group of vampires...

    • Shimmer
A luminescent, relatively rare crystal mined primarily at the labor camp far southwest of Netherwell. It's pleasantly warm to the touch. The higher the lumen, the pricier. The radiating glow is usually warm yellow to orange and can be seen illuminating the streets of most towns and cities, with rare variations of warm white being used for high-end luxury items, like jewelry and fancy indoor lighting. The red shimmer is monopolized by the authorities, and if you're caught in possession of it they will not only confiscate it but also fine you. A combination of yellow and red lanterns is always used for the identification of their navy ships and personnel.

Yellow, distant clusters of shimmer can sometimes be spotted in the roof of the Nether, reminiscent of actual stars.

    • Undead
Refers to the populace of vampires living in the Nether. The two words are used indiscriminately on a daily basis, but officials are encouraged to use the word undead.
