There are many means through which mortals may access the power of magic. Anyone of any race, creed, or moral leaning may practice magic, and the ends to which it can be used vary just as much as its casters. Some mages are born with magical abilities that simply need coaxing (sorcerers), some are granted power by magical or eldritch beings (warlocks), and some study magic at length to gain their power (wizards). In some cases, one may fall under multiple classifications. Even beyond this, there are many other ways for magic to manifest, including magical items (both enchanted and cursed), alchemical concoctions with various effects, and so on.
The potential of magic is functionally limited only by the caster and their finesse with the craft. Some mages only utilize their spells for daily needs or household chores, like a homemaker witch performing multiple chores at once. Some use their magic in service to an adventuring lifestyle. Others pursue magic academically, or use it to further the fields of science and technology through innovative uses of its energy. Others still may use it to dominate or manipulate others, threaten them into submission, or even commit atrocious warcrimes.
Suffice it to say, magic reflects its caster.
