Unlocking the Server & Activity
Once your sample post and first character are approved, the rest of the server will become available to you. To stay active, we look for two monthly contributions (RP posts, art, or stories) per character. See #activity-checks for details.
WHERE SHOULD YOU PLAY?
Unlocking the Server & Activity
Discord is for rapid-fire scenes (responses under an hour).
Forums (RPR) are available for slower paced roleplay.Room Activity
Discord rooms are shared. If a scene is idle for two hours, others may use the space. We don't allow "room camping," so if your posts consistently take over an hour, please move to the forums. Just remember to be kind-- sometimes people are just stepping away for a quick break. Make sure you note if you plan on coming back too!
Missions
Missions found in the #missions-terminal have special activity rules attached, so please be sure to check them out before applying to any missions!
PUBLIC ROOMS & PARTNER CHOICE
AotM Characters range from all sorts of eras, fandoms, and personal preferences. You never have to play with anyone you don't want to, but remember that Discord rooms (except Gates and Dojos) are public spaces.

Joining In
It's polite to ask how to fit into an ongoing scene. You cannot bar someone from joining a public room, but you can kindly let them know if your needs or styles don't mesh and you won't be engaging.
Here's a script for you!
Hey! I noticed you're roleplaying in #xyz! I'd love to join in with -your character's name- if you're open to new parties. Any way I could fit them in?Respect Boundaries
If someone tells you they aren't interested in playing, please respect it. It's okay not to be everyone's cup of tea!
Parallel Play
Multiple scenes can happen in one room. If it gets crowded, bolding or underlining character names helps keep track of who you're talking to.
Need Privacy?
For guaranteed private 1-on-1 scenes, please use the Gate rooms, Dojos, or our forums on RPR.
GHOSTING & COMMUNICATION
AotM does not believe in fostering a ghosting culture. Please communicate if you need to step away for your mental health or a busy schedule. Real life comes first, and you'll never be judged for taking a break-- but let your partners know.
We define ghosting as two weeks without a post or a word for our forum rps, or two days after dropping a Discord rp without letting someone know why. If this happens to you, please alert staff so we can help. If you struggle with basic communication, AotM might not be the right fit for you.

We are an inclusive 18+ community. Bigotry and hate are never welcome. If you roleplay experiences outside of your own, such as marginalized cultures or disabilities, please do your homework.

RESPECT & BOUNDARIES
No Trauma Dumping
This community is here for pretendy fun times. We are not a crisis center. Do not use OOC spaces for sympathy fishing or heavy emotional unloading. Serial whinging will result in a boot.
If you are in need of emotional support, please utilize this resource list. They are more equipped to help than we are.Keep OOC Stress Free
Real world politics, religion, and conspiracy theories stay in character only. Do not bring them into this space in an OOC capacity. People come here to relax and decompress from real life stressors. We are all aware of the various ways the world is on fire at any given time.
Don't Yuck Other People's Yums
You don't have to like everyone else's favorite fandom, character, or the fact that they like to roleplay smut or that they get the willies at the very thought of a character kissing someone. But you do have to be respectful to them. If you don't have anything nice or constructive to say, keep it to yourself.
Shipping & Discourse
No one has to ship their character with you. Canon relationships do not mean those relationships must be played out here. No means no, not get sneaky, and consent may be withdrawn at any time. People may also ship whoever they'd like as long as they're not breaking the rules.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Please make an effort to reach out to players directly before asking staff to intervene unless someone is making you feel unsafe or breaking community rules. If you don't mesh with someone, it's okay to just stop interacting. Here are some scripts if you're unsure of what to say:
"Hey X! I know nothing was likely meant by it, but XYZ is bothering me a little bit. Can we talk about it?"
"I appreciate your interest in writing with me and my characters, but I think that we're probably not a good match as partners. This isn't really something that I'd like to discuss, I just wanted to let you know that I will be stepping back from our roleplays and interactions."
"Heya! I just wanted to reach out about X, because you might not be aware, but XYZ."
If you need staff for more serious issues, please utilize our #problem-report room, which will walk you through the process.
PINGS & ALERTS
On Discord, @pinging someone to get their attention for a post or a conversation is the default for most spaces. If you'd prefer people not ping you, please let your partner know and consider offering alternatives.
Please respect preferences, but give others grace if they forget. Remember that quoting also pings!
READ THE PINS
Always check the pins in every room. Pins contain vital info that you'll miss if you skip them. Ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse, as there are reminders everywhere, including in our rules. Jabber eats one small and adorable animal with a little sprinkle of hot sauce each and every time you forget to read the pins.
If you're on mobile, you can find the pins by clicking on the room name at the top of the screen, then selecting the little push pin button.CONSEQUENCES & RETCONS
We don't do takesy-backsies just because your character is facing consequences for their actions. Major retcons are only for extreme circumstances, as they make it more difficult for others to continue their own stories. Consequences are opportunities for character growth.
If you find yourself in a sticky situation with your character, plot a way forward with your partners instead of erasing the past, or ask staff for help.

Character images are optional, but if you use them, please select from ethical sources.
ACTOR REPRESENTATION FOR CHARACTERS
Real life images should be celebrities or models. Avoid using photos of random people you found on youtube. Youtube stars are a gray area and will be accepted on a case by case basis. Please check with staff first.
ETHICAL ART SOURCES & CREDIT
Indie artists must be credited, whether it's fandom art or otherwise. Ensure that you have permission to use their pieces. Art theft is not tolerated here. Art from major published media like DC Comics or Star Wars does not require attribution.
OUR STANCE ON AI
You may not use artificial intelligence to write here, nor do we accept AI Art for characters. AI Art steals art from artists to use in its training data, and whatever you may think about the product itself, the methods used to train these models are unethical. Until this changes we will not allow them.
We are a Multiverse setting, and that leaves a lot of wiggle room for creativity! But don't abuse that privilege. Writers consistently abusing powerful concepts will no longer be allowed to play them here.
Please also note that while we allow a wide amount of different kinds of characters with different powers and power levels, if you bring in a character who has traits that others may find difficult to play with, they may elect not to engage with these characters. No player is required to play with any character or take part in any plot they don't feel compatible with. You should always feel free to (kindly) turn down a roleplay.
As an extension, if you see an ongoing scene, it's always polite to ask before joining in case character concepts aren't compatible.

Multiple Versions of Canons -
With respect to the other person(s) playing that canon.
Anthro Characters
❔Powerful Characters, Deities, Folklore or Spirits
Remember, there's always a bigger fish, and that your fun should not detract from other people's fun. Concepts from major real life religions are not currently being accepted. Ancient Egypt? Yes. Modern Christianity? Do not pass go. Appropriated folklore is not allowed here either. Please respect the wishes of the cultures of origin of any concept you are considering.
❔Relatives of Canons
Canon relatives of characters may be apped freely. Original characters who are relatives of a canon must be bought through activity points. Please note that either situation will not be every player's cup of tea, and they do not have to interact with you or your character, or even acknowledge the relationship. Fandom relationships can be tricky on the best of days.
❔Original Characters from Extinct Races
You may app original characters from extinct fandom races, such as Kryptonians, but they must be well thought out and respectful to the source material, and will likely receive extra scrutiny from staff during the application process and play.
❔Time Based Powers, Ability Mimicry Powers, or Reality Manipulation
Reality benders like Q or Mxyzptlk may be apped, but they will be subject to higher standards than other characters. These are difficult characters to play without stepping on other people's toes or killing the story vibes. Consider playing them for a single story as a side character instead in order to get a feel for them before you app them. This goes the same for other similarly powerful abilities. Reality benders require purchasing via Activity Points.
❔Characters over 15 Feet Tall
Characters who are over 15 feet tall require purchasing with activity points from the supply store. Long characters are fine (your nagas are safe) as long as they don't fall into extreme territory, and don't need any points to app. Please check our Size Guide to see who will fit where!
❔Abilities Capable of Affecting Free Will
If your character is a telepath, empath, or has other similar abilities that may change how characters naturally act or what they think, ask before employing their abilities on other people's characters. These sorts of abilities need extra care and plotting.
❔Non-Sapient Animals
If you find playing a regular, normal ass dog fun, then you're welcome to it. But expect other people to treat your character as such. This sort of character may also not be everyone's cup of tea. Please respect individual preferences.
❔Too Cartoony? Personify it!
Some characters out there, like Bugs Bunny or MLP characters might be too cartoony and unrealistic for the vibes of our game. Feel free to adapt or personify them instead to make them fit better! Staff is always available to help idea bounce if you've got your heart set on something.

❌ Joke Characters. Adult Comedy Shows like Family Guy, TV Shows with dubious cartoon physics or the more out there, wacky animes probably aren't a good match for this game.
Note: If your character is otherwise realistic, and is more sitcom than slapstick and doesn't break immersion, you're probably fine.
❌ Real Life People as characters, living or dead. We may make some exceptions for some historical figures, but talk with staff first please. Most really, really old historical figures like Blackbeard or Cleopatra are generally fine.
❌ Other's OCs, including those from certain D&D podcasts. We will make exceptions if you receive direct permission to use them.
❌ Canons from small time or 'indy' platforms such as hobby comics. Same deal as above. If you get permission from the creator, you may play them here. For the sake of clarity, we do not consider media popular enough to wind up on steam or in local libraries to be 'indie' for the purposes of this rule.
❌ We do not accept glorification of characters played to uphold harmful ideologies.

To ensure a good balance of what everyone likes to play and what they like to play against, some character types require purchasing with points from the community's Supply Store. You can earn points for these characters by doing things like helping out, recruiting other players, apping characters from wanted lists, and participating in site events.
To avoid serial apping and dropping, each purchase only works once. You cannot app an OC, then drop them a month later to get your points back and app another one. You may, however, switch out a character for free if they haven't yet had a roleplay with another player.
SPECIAL CHARACTER TYPES
❖ Original Characters - 500 Points
Your first OC here on AotM is free. OCs after your first require points.
❖ Non-Canon Relatives of Canons - 1000 Points
This slot applies to characters who are OC relatives of canons. Brothers, sisters, kids, cousins. You may have a canon adopt your character as a child without this slot if it happens in roleplay, or if the players of all parental characters are present and agree to allow an OC relative. Everything else falls under this rule and needs to be bought with points. Please keep in mind that this does not necessarily guarantee that a canon's player will want to play with you. AU relatives, particularly kids, are a tricky topic for a lot of people.
❖ Any character over 15 feet tall - 500 Points
Giants are popular, it seems, and there's limited space for giant stompy people everywhere. Characters with truly extreme sizes must be discussed. There is a limit to how much we can accommodate narratively. Characters that are temporarily large, like Ant Man from Marvel, or Steven Universe fusions do not require a purchase, as long as they spend most of their time below the threshold limit.
❖ Character with powers considered 'reality bending' - 1500 Points
