The Garden Square
Location Native to: World #10025 - Barbary Grove
Barbary’s Garden Square was named for the many little gardens that hug the red-brick walkways and cobblestones of this ever popular artisan market. The majority of the inner market is closed off to cars in order to make it more accessible for foot traffic and the occasional horse and buggy. These have proven to be very popular with visiting couples, particularly during the city’s yearly winter festival. But there are other little gems to be found all year round here, from the center’s colorful little cafes, to local art galleries, to shops selling all manner of kitschy goods, shiny trinkets, and tasty snacks. There’s a farmer’s market on Sundays, and an old fashioned theater at the end of the square that both plays recent blockbusters and puts on the occasional play. It's an old and beloved building, a survivor from the time when ‘movie palaces’ were all the rage, and it still has several crystal chandeliers, and all of its original crown molding. |

Varney's Veggies NPC Info: Varney is known to be an eccentric, soft spoken gentleman who mostly keeps to himself and grows vegetables. His long, dark hair is often neatly tied back, and there's a certain air of loneliness in his pale blue eyes. He always dresses well, but not extravagantly, and prefers to stay beneath the shade of his vendor's tent. If engaged in conversation, he will be polite, but he will rarely speak in an animated fashion unless asked about his produce, which he is quite proud of.
All sorts of interesting and heirloom fruits and veggies can be found here!
Specialty items: UFO peaches, black elderberries, genovese basil, purple broccoli All the Buzz NPC Info: Maggie is a bubbly and bright red-head who sells honey and bee related beauty and health products. She can sometimes be seen with her two children who like to sell fizzy lemonade sweetened with honey when they accompany her.
Various kinds of honey, beauty, health, and bath products, as well as the occasional fizzy lemonade can be found here.
Specialty items: Honey & Lilac Oatmeal Soap Bar, Golden Poppy Honey, Fizzy Lemon Mead Rise NPC Info: Richard is an older black man with salt and pepper hair. Despite his age, he's clearly kept up with his health-- all that kneading probably doesn't hurt. He's generally quiet, but has a good sense of humor and a belly laugh that can be heard across the market. He takes a lot of pride in the breads and pastries he makes, but is a pretty humble guy despite his considerable skill.
Breads from sourdough to pumpernickel to rustic country bread can be found here, as well as plenty of cookies, small cakes, and pastries. There is also some kind of hot coffee available usually, basic but good. Occasionally in the fall Rise also sells fresh pressed cider, both cold and hot.

Along with the more temporary vendors that come and go with the Sunday farmer's market, the Garden Square also has several more permanent places to shop and eat! The Whistling Cafe The Whistling Cafe is a business that’s been in the same family for generations. Rumor has it that a sprightly spirit haunts the building, whistling into the quiet late at night, and supposedly, this is where the Cafe gets its name. The building has definitely weathered the years, but it’s well taken care of, and its owners give it a new coat of deep green paint every spring. Planters full of Barbary poppies cordon off the cafe’s outdoor portion from the rest of the area’s foot traffic, and it’s a pleasant place to just sit and people watch during a nice summer afternoon. Read more about the Whistling Cafe here! The Lazy Serpent Noodle Bar Owned by the charismatic Sam Mink, The Lazy Serpent sells noodle based dishes from a generous handful of different cultures, from gooey mac and cheese to spicy potato noodles, as well as several types of ramen, soba, and udon with an ever rotating menu. The Lazy Serpent is also well known for knowing how to accompany its dishes with the perfect drink, be it non-alcoholic or a little more on the boozy side. The Lazy Serpent is a little tucked out of the way, but just look for the sign with the little silver-green snake curled up in a noodle bowl and you're bound to find it.
