Barbary Grove
Botanical Garden
Location Native to: World #10025 - Barbary Grove

The verdant green of a botanical garden is a place that soothes the soul to retreat to, and though Barbary Grove’s botanical garden is somewhat smaller than other gardens you’ll find across the state, it’s an undeniable refuge for the little city.

Among its water lily ponds and quiet bridges, the botanical garden is famous for its display of golden, Barbary Poppies, a subspecies of the flower that only grows in and around the city of Barbary Grove. During the summer they paint the fields the walking trails wind through a soft, sunshiny gold, filling the air with a fragrance both sweet and slightly spicy.

There are rumors that the poppies are actually a species that was once abundant in parts of Egypt, but are now long extinct. Legend has it that a local found the seeds in a tomb there, and brought them back to Barbary Grove long ago, finding that they grew quite well in Barbary’s soil. But who knows if that’s true or not? People can have such wild imaginations…

The Gardens
The Gardens are open from 10AM - 6AM Wednesday through Sunday & for Special Events

Woodland Grove
The Woodland Grove is the largest area of the gardens, spanning several relaxing walking trails that wind through trees and fields and even over a small stream that trickles into a quiet duck pond. In the spring and summer the maple trees are most noticeable, including sugar maples which you can take part in tapping when in season. You'll also see brilliant pink gooseberry flowers, golden currant, and salmon berry. Come fall, you can enjoy bright red elderberries and the various birds and butterflies they attract!

Poppy Fields
Our golden Barbary Poppy fields are perhaps our most famous garden. Unlike many poppy species, which tend to bloom in the spring and die off by early summer, the Barbary Poppy thrives in the heat and can be enjoyed all summer long, blooming from late spring to early fall.

This part of our garden is very popular for picnics, and a small shaded picnic area can be found at the top of the field.

The Mossy Glen
The Garden's Mossy Glen is a quiet, cool place to relax, shaded by a thick canopy of trees that enables the moss growing in the glen to thrive. The glen hosts many different varieties of moss including bent-leaf moss and snake liverwort. A nearby dragonfly pond handily deals with any mosquitos, and you are welcome to take a seat on one of our stone benches and enjoy these jewel colored beauties zipping back and forth for as long as you'd like.

Reflection Pool
Just off the Starlight Pagoda, the Reflection Pool mirrors the sky above as well as the tower's intricate beauty in its still waters, and reminds everyone who visits to stop a moment and enjoy the world around them. The pool is framed by a ring of smaller pools decorated with water lilies and other various water dwelling plants.

The Starlight Pagoda
The Starlight Pagoda is our garden's event center and local art display space. Its first two floors are open to the public to enjoy visiting artist galleries. The top two floors are available for private events as well as occasional tea tastings and workshops.

The Pagoda is a beautiful building, with deep blue roof tiles and dark grey wood work. Various celestial scenes can be seen carved into its railings and pillars, and several murals are featured within. Each of the four floors depicts a different time of day, with the entry floor starting at dawn and the top floor ending at midnight.
