Currency in Sanctuary & Harbor
Currency and Commerce Bartering and trades for services are far and away the most common way of obtaining goods in Sanctuary. Sanctuary doesn't have an official currency, and in its cold and barren wastes, outside money has very little use. Still, some currencies with base materials that are valuable within the community in practical or ornamental ways are accepted by many, though not all sellers. On occasion, you may also get hopefuls that plan on getting rich when they get home and will trade for currencies that might be valuable in their own home worlds. Most of Sanctuary considers these individuals fairly foolish, but frown all the same on those who take advantage of their naïve behavior. Whenever the AotM can, they will take any off world currencies with them to other worlds for supply runs and will return with any requested items as long as those making the requests put forth a portion of their funds for the larger community's needs. However, these runs are not regular, and the AotM can't guarantee that they will always be going to places where certain currencies are viable. Those who live in Harbor may be more willing to take a wider variety of coinage, if perhaps simply because of a larger amount of individuals driven by greed, but weapons and illicit goods are also a popular currency there. |
Coinage in Sanctuary & Harbor Currencies made from precious metals are about the only universally accepted currency in Sanctuary. They are also included here for reference so that it's easier to determine the worth of items in trades, whether using coins or not. Most places will take the equivalent of these prices in trades or services. You can also see more examples in information threads for places such as The Sparrow and Hare Tavern and the Mammothjaw Hotsprings. Not all information threads will have prices, because not all in world locations will have prices. Visitors to these places are fully expected to haggle and suggest their own trades. The most commonly accepted coins are copper, silver, and gold.
10 copper = 1 silver piece
10 silver = 1 gold piece Bars are common ways to keep large amounts of metal on a person. Each bar is worth about 100 pieces of its respective metal. |

Rare Goods
There are some goods in Sanctuary that are hard to find that may be unexpected elsewhere. Dairy, for example, is always in high demand, because Sanctuary has no cattle at the moment. Livestock in general are a rare commodity, because even when someone manages to bring one in, between the weather, the predators, and the lack of grazing grounds, they rarely survive long.
The only truly established domestic animals in Sanctuary are predator species like dogs and cats, as well as the Harlequin Ducks that the Sunbirds cultivate. They sell the eggs for a pretty fair price, but the ducks themselves can be expensive.
Likewise, technology takes a hit outside of havens like Harbor. Between the Cracklers, rust, and not having enough power sources and replacement parts, they tend to fall apart quickly in Sanctuary. Some people have given up on technological goods altogether, while others will pay a premium for them.
Anything modern and luxurious like pre-packaged snacks, imported fresh fruit and vegetables, candy, coffee, canned or bottled drinks, or hygiene supplies are always in extremely high demand, as they have to be brought in from off world through the Gates, and often very carefully.
Wages & Debts
Since hauling around a bolt of cloth or a pound of vegetables for trade would be inconvenient, most traders will take debt counts to be collected at a later point, either at the end of the day or the end of the week. It's considered polite for the buyer to be the one to deliver the promised goods, but traders who are owed will come calling, and it's a small town, so it's always a good idea to pay what you promised.
Labor is often paid similarly, or in coin if so desired. Some examples of the coin equivalent of what difference services cost or pay can be found below.
General Labor - 5-6 for a day's labor.
Usually odd jobs like mucking stables, sweeping, harvesting crops, that sort of thing. If you can do it with your hands or minimal tools without too much thinking about it, the job usually falls into this category. This definitely doesn't pay as well as other jobs, but the upside is that many employers will offer a place to sleep and daily meals to supplement.
Forest Guide - 1-2 , typically charged per hour or mile traveled
A Guide for Foraging, Hunting, or General Exploration. Typically these parties aren't meant to go far or into dangerous territory, so guides will be minimally armed and may have varying levels of wilderness experience.
Armed Escort - 16 per day
Generally meant for more dangerous expeditions, these individuals are usually paid by the day to get parties where they're going and back alive. They are usually well equipped, well trained, and knowledgeable about the surrounding areas. They also know that they're in high demand and typically charge accordingly.
Builders & Artisans - 10-15 per day for a small job
Another profession in high demand, Sanctuary always needs people to build new shelters, upkeep the existing ones, and improve the town's quality of life for everyone. The prices can fluctuate a lot from job to job and person to person, but people with building skills are usually well compensated in Sanctuary by a town glad to be kept out of the cold.
Packages & Mail
Sanctuary's mail system relies on a series of couriers hired by a central agency. There are four drop off and pick up points for regular mail: One at The Sparrow and Hare, one at the entrance of both the Fireside Market and the Scrapyard, and one at the Bathhouse. Mail at these points is dropped off twice each day.
Regular mail service is usually no more than about 1 . Special mail to specific individuals and locations can be delivered for a higher price. Mail must be under two pounds, inert (magically and physically) and inanimate.
