I just read the wackest thing ever.
The google... AI... told me that in West Virginia, there are no Federally recognized tribes associated with the area because, I quote from the page: "There were none when someone arrived to see it"

So, I guess I'm gonna try falling down an internet hole to learn more about that.

Wasn't there a whole ass war involving the natives in that area or am I just wrong?
I could be wrong, but my understanding is that no tribes settled middle Appalachia at the time the Europeans showed up– Poor land, plus no one wants to be permanently sandwiched between the Cherokee and Iroquois (Very scary)– but they did travel and hunt through it.

Virginia fought Lord Dunmore's War against the Shawnee and Mingo Iroquois, then the US of course had the Northwest Indian War and Tecumseh’s War right across the Ohio River.

In other words, mid-Appalachian natives were just easier to displace.
Ah I was thinking of Metacomet's War, my apologies. Saw the Shawnee labeled as an Algonquin speaking group and connected the two.
