The culture of the High Renaissance was dominated by the Republic of Venice which possessed a seemingly infinite wealth owing to its mercantile successes tracing back to the earliest Crusades. Most of the greatest composers in Italy, particularly the many Franco-Flemish expatriates living in the northern Italian city-states, had their masterpieces published in the busy printing presses of Venice throughout most of the 1500s.
