❖ Personality ❖
Devious, indifferent, taunting, intelligent, manipulative, cruel, callous, failure-intolerant. The Cardinal is considered to be a very devious man, who uses his position to manipulate the administration of Venezia, and the Empire. Leader of the Red Guards, and a man who dislikes the Reggimento Corazzieri, and it’s former Captain, Enrico de Parma, now the Provveditore Generale degli Affari Militari (Superintendent General of for Military Affairs), he uses his leadership to try and frame the Corazzieri, in order for the Doge to lose faith in them and Enrico de Parma. Ultimately, he is an intelligent individual who is able to conform spies and agents to do his bidding and provides enough scare factor from his position to keep them obedient. Mainly, the Cardinal is cruel and callous and would kill anyone who disobeyed him or got in his way. When he discovered that his mistress was sleeping with other men in his own bed, the Cardinal took her to the Veneto, out deep into the woods and had her executed by his guards, shooting her in the back of the head.

❖ History ❖

Decio was born 1 July 1529, to Pompeo Azzolini, of Corsica, and Maria Ferrara, of Sardinia in Ostia, just 80 kilometers from Rome. Being the fourth of five children and the last of three sons, unlike his father or brothers, he was delicate from childhood, and suffered frequent bouts of ill-health throughout his life. His family belonged to the lesser nobility of Corse, his father was a soldier and courtier who served as the Grand Provost of Corse and his mother, Maria Ferrara, of Sardinia, was the daughter of a famous jurist in Naples. When he was five years old, his father died brawl while gambling, leaving the family in debt; but with the aid of his mother’s family, and of royal grants, however, the family was able to avoid financial difficulties.

At the age of 9, young Decio was sent to the College of Navarre in Paris to study philosophy. Thereafter, he began to train for a military career with the Corsican Navy. His private life seems to have been typical of a young officer of the era, but in 1549, age 20, he was treated by for pneumonia and released from service.

As a educated man of only 22 years (1551), Decio moved to Rome and was accepted into the court of Cardinal Felice Condoletti, who employed him as private secretary. Then in 1554, at age 25, he became a Deacon in Ostia... then on July 6, 1557, at age 28, he took his vows as an ordained priest and returned to Rome. Thus, Decio continued to rise in prominence and practicality of duties within the Catholic Church, such as, on 15 November, 1564, age 35, he was appointed Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cervia.

Four years later, in 1568, Cardinal Felice Condoletti elevated Decio (age 39) to Cardinal Bishop in the Consistory (imperial cabinet). Then in 2 February 1571, by special dispensation of a Papal Bull by Pope Pius V, at an unusual age for a Cardinale, Decio was awarded the cardinal's hat, as a non-voting member in any Papal Conclave until he reaches the voting age, and the titular church of San Matteo in Merulana, Espania on January 15 of the following year, 1572.

Then in May, 1572, now Cardinale Decio Azzolini, a mere age of 43, was assigned to Venezia as Patriciate di Venezia.
