There had been quite a trail of events lately, and Red was having a fascinating time working to figure them out. Red had been in law enforcement quite literally as long as the occupation had existed, and yet it never failed to intrigue him what one human being would do to another. In many sadistic ways, it pleased him, but it made him work to understand the why just as much. It was the knowledge he followed from job to job, and part of the reason he, and his best friend and his authority commissioner, Asher, had sailed their way to some shady apartments in Florida. The other part of the reason was much more personal to him than that.

It started when he had been called in initially to find a missing movie star, and when he got there, discovered an entire mess of a police department. He had barely had time to move in, let alone truly begin to find the girl, when one rare day he was actually home for a few minutes, the apartments caught fire, he was almost sure, by the very girl he was looking for. Or, quite possibly her kidnappers, judging from the way the girl was then carried out of the apartment in tears, by a very suspicious looking tattooed man. As if that hadn’t been strange enough, following the two of them, again he was almost sure, was the very same blonde that he knew unlike any other. Now, Red was not a soft man, a humorous man, or an affectionate one, but even he couldn’t help as he watched in near disbelief and amusement as the three of them then piled into a very familiar white SUV and peeled out of there like a bat out of hell. He might have laughed, if not for the burning building. He could have caught them easily, and he had all their scents now, but he enjoyed a good chase.

He finished dealing with the investigation of the fire, which turned out to be a packet of foil that had been nuked in the microwave, and then the microwave had exploded. It was fairly open and closed on the fire side, but that left Red still having to find and figure out what happened with the movie star. Since he hadn’t officially taken over, as he had been planning, he and Asher found it of no difficulty to pack up and leave to go in search of his missing movie star. As usual, the two bickered on the trip over as Asher told him precisely where to go, and exactly how to get there, but he was once again, burning in curiosity as he pulled his boat up to the marina that was in front of a horrible condo building. As he stood there, judging every part of the land, he couldn’t help but ask himself; “How is it people still live like this?”
