The Train Station at Sherman serves as a crucial hub, one of many along the rails, for transportation, commerce, and communication, connecting distant regions and facilitating the movement of people and goods across the expanding United States. Sherman, being the last stop before the heights of Sherman Pass, was significant to the Laramie District of the Wyoming Territory as a continuing pivotal point for transportation, trade, and expansion, contributing significantly to the development and growth of the American West.
Sherman's Train Station has varied significantly in appearance, operation, and ownership, through the years. But here is some current general characteristics:
Appearance:
❖ Design: The Train Station has grown from a simple wooden platform to a larger, more elaborate structure built from wood and stone. It has a distinctive architectural style, which has been influenced by Sherman's local materials and architectural trend.
❖ Platform: It typically has a raised platform for passengers to board and disembark trains, often covered to protect travelers from the elements.
❖ Signage: The Train Station usually has signs displaying the station name, schedules, and directions for travelers.
❖ Ticketing and Waiting Areas: The Train Station has two ticket counters available, three offices, a telegraph room with service window, a medium sized waiting room where passengers purchased tickets and waited for their trains, and a medium-sized warehouse area for storage.
❖ Freight Area: There is a separate area for loading and unloading freight, often adjacent to the passenger section.
Operation:
❖ Schedule and Timetables: Schedules are posted for train arrivals and departures. Timetables are relatively basic and are subject to delays due to weather, maintenance, or other factors.
❖ Staff: The Train Station is staffed by ticket agents, stationmasters, conductors, and other personnel responsible for maintaining operations and assisting passengers. Once UPRR employees, Jon Claridge's efforts to end the transient nature of the employees added jobs to the town for its own residents.
❖ Freight Handling: Freight operations is a significant part of the Train Station. Goods are loaded onto trains for transport to various destinations.
Telegraph Office:
Still, messages of joy, sorrow and success come in those hand-delivered yellow envelopes thru the Post Office.... but for more expeditious messages, the telegraph changed the world with Samuel Morse’s invention; and communication sped through the land in a way never known before.

Ownership and Management:
❖ -- The Train Station was once owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad company that owned the tracks and ran the trains. But the transient nature of jobs and personnel frustrated the people and businesses of Sherman, and the UPRR reluctantly gave over ownership of the station to the town at the behest of Jon Claridge as a kind gesture to his community.
