Rules of Avalon
General/RP Ethics
1:Godmodding-Over the years this term has developed numerous meanings and as such no one true definition can easily be pinned down. As a result, everyone has pretty much compiled their own lists of what entails Godmodding to them. The following list is what constitutes as Godmodding in Avalon...
- Gods, Deities, Etc: This will be covered a bit more in the character creation section but portraying a character who is a god or deity of some form is fine but this will not make them an exception to any rules. If you think that or do it, that makes it where your Godmodding.
- Limitless Blocking/Dodging: This is where a character seems to be able to dodge and block every single thing that comes at them regardless of the circumstances. Such as jumping a few feet into the air to dodge a fireball thrown at them when they have a spiked ceiling inches above their head.
- Limitless Energy: This is where a character can sit there and do all kinds of stuff be it being hit in fights, running several miles or whatever and still seem like they just got up fresh out of bed that morning. Having a character with extremely high amounts of energy is understandable but not no limitless crap. Everyone tires eventually.
This list will be updated as time goes and new circumstances arise that can be constituted as Godmodding, but either way it isn't allowed in Avalon.
2:Consent- Everyone should be familiar with this. If not then it is simply asking another player your RPing with if it's ok if a major circumstance that could have drastic life changing effects on their character happens. Things requiring consent vary from person to person but the following list are things you should always ask for consent on.
- Death: The most common thing to ask for consent on. The main reason is mainly because players just enjoy their characters they don't want them to die yet or just perhaps have their own vision of how the character will die when their time comes.
- Dismemberment: The loss of a limb can have a severe drastic effect on a character. That and some people just want their characters to have all their limbs in tact when their time comes. This is why this is one of the things one must ask for consent on.
- Rape: No one ever really wishes to be raped. So why would you assume it's cool to just go ahead and do it to someones character? Yes it can add to character development and what not but still. Ask first.
- Pregnency: The birth of a child is truly a wonderful and glorious thing but that doesn't mean someone wants their character to experience it. Maybe there exists a reason why that is.
- Slavery: The master/slave scene is indeed a popular one. No argument there. But this doesn't mean everyone wishes to participate in it. Maybe someone despises it or whatever. That is why this is on the list.
When in doubt about something, play it safe and ask. And remember. No means no. If you get a no as a response for something, it can be downgraded, such as instead of losing a limb, a character instead gets a really deep wound.
3:Power Leeching- This term, as it pertains to Avalon, is properly defined as one who is friends with another who has banning/ejection power and tries to take advantage of their friendship to use these powers for their own personal gain. For instance telling your friend to ban someone just because you had an argument with them. It isn't your decision who gets banned and what not. If you have an issue with someone, either try to resolve it with them or bring it to the attention of the staff.
4:Respect: This is something that is shown, earned and given. Despite your personal preferences as it pertains to respect when OOC, you must show respect to guests members and moderators alike. I don't mean you got to say sir or ma'am, but be kind. If you got a reason to not show someone respect, then don't show it in the forums. Just ignore each other or try to resolve your differences via pm/whisper. When IC however you don't have to show respect as it's your characters and not really you.
5:Drama- Depending on the cause this rule can go hand in hand with the rule on Respect. OOC Drama, we ask you go ahead and let it out but do it via PM/Whisper with someone who's willing to lend you an ear. You are allowed to mention it in the OOC forums for the purpose of finding someone who's willing to listen or possible get a group of opinions on the matter.
6:OOC- Out of Character, or OOC for short, is to be kept to the designated OOC forums or, in the case of Furcadia, to designated OOC/AFK areas. The only time OOC should appear during a RP is just to confirm something that happened. And that's something that can be handled via PM (RPR), or whisper (Furc).
Character Based
1:Names- All names must be realistic. So no crap like sexyman58. A character may lack a last or first name or substitute a name altogether for a title given there is a decent backstory to explain this.
2:Gods- There are no issues with characters being gods, deities and so forth but do note. This does not make you an exception to the Godmodding rule. Especially when it comes to being harmed as there as numerous accounts in legend and lore as well as in RPing in general of weapons and items that can cause harm to, and even kill gods.
3:Basic Info- To help ensure a degree of realism that all RPs have, on your characters page there is some mandatory basic information your page must contain. Mainly things that can be seen with the naked eye or can at least be estimated. Visible weapons/armor, height, weight. Those sorts of things.
4:Infinite Holding- The Bag of Infinite holding. And item of D&D Fame. The item has recently become an annoyance to me mainly because everybody always seems to conveniently have an item needed for a given situation within it. If you want to have this nifty little bag, that's fine. BUT you WILL list every item your character has stored in it on your characters page. It's either that, no bag, or no joining. Plain and simple.
5:Originality- Avalon is a strictly OC continuity and as such we ask that you do not join with any kind of fandom character. It is understandable that coincidences can and will happen and as such it won't really be held against you. Due to the fact that someone can claim a character is original just by simply changing their name, Names won't be looked at. It will be the characters details. If one of your characters is pegged as a carbon copy of one that already exists, you will be asked kindly to modify them or risk their being booted from the continuity.
6:Character Limits- This rule was recently thought up but due to people attempting to join with an insurmountable amount of characters we have decided to place a limit on the amount of characters a player can join the continuity with. This limit is simply seven and the characters known as The Elysium and TatZ N ThingZ, which are dreams on Furcadia, do not count towards my own and Nikina's character counts as their sole purpose in the group is for NPC controlling.
7:Anonymous Players- It is understandable that some people wish to maintain some level of secrecy as it pertains to their real selves and as such there is no problem with a character being labeled as played anonymously. In order to maintain a level of secrecy for them, anyone wishing to join with a annonymously played character will be contacted by a member of Avalon's staff to confirm other joining requirements such as their age and what not. A list of said staff will be available so that the anonymous player will know who they can answer to. If someone claims to be a new staff member hence the absence of their name on the list, contact either myself or Nikina to confirm first before telling them anything.
Worldly Travel
1:Use- Worldly Travel is for parts of the main story line RP that don't occur within the area of one of Avalon's cities or landmarks. If your character chooses to leave the city in which they are in to head to a new city, you would begin posting in this area to document your travels with extended RP info. Such as battles they may fight on the way to their destination and what not.
2:P.S.A.- If you don't wish to post about your characters travels for whatever reason, you may substitute with a Public Service Announcment (P.S.A.) post instead. Basically posting saying that so and so was spotted around, heading towards or whatever to whatever.
Physical Combat
1:General- Physical combat in the continuity of Avalon is done based on a trust system. This is where you trust who you are engaging in RP combat with to be fair and help weave a story with the fight. It's an art form of sorts really. But the point is be fair and don't be afraid of your guy being put in a position where he has no choice but to take a hit or 3.
2:Attacking- When attacking, it must be worded so it can be shown as an attempt. Just like if you get into a fight in real life. Just cause you swing at someone doesn't mean it's automatically going to hit. This is where the trust factor comes into play cause you'll be trusting your opponent to judge if the attack hits or not based on various factors such as if your character did something to distract them before attacking to lure their attention and other things like that.
3:Taking A Hit- Part of the trust based combat system involves taking a hit or three. If you can manage to go through a fight without taking a hit, hey good on ya. Flawless Victory as the ominous voice from Mortal Kombat would say. But I hope you didn't Godmod your way to that flawless victory. If your put in a position where your character has no choice but to take a hit, then well...a hit better occur unless they got some kind of spell or something that allows them to avoid it somehow. I mean if you created a fighter and don't want him to ever take any damage then why in blazes create a fighter to begin with? Fighters become fighters knowing full well that there's a good possibility their gonna have some scars with stories to tell when their time has come.
4:Dodging- Dodging is a good way for any combatant to avoid taking damage. Possibly the most common way. All we ask here in Avalon is that if your put in a posistion where you can't dodge for whatever reason, such as lack of movement room, then don't try to make it where you can.
5:Blocking- A fair substitute for dodging, blocking is another way to avoid taking damage, or at least most of the damage from an attack. Just like with dodging however, if circumstances prevent you from blocking then don't do it.
6:Countering- The art of countering an attack is a good way though not fool proof way to catch an opponent off guard. Preforming a counter in Avalon can be preformed in the same action as one in which you took a hit, blocked or dodged. It, like regular attacking however, must be attempted though as your opponent could block or dodge it themselves and even counter your counter. You can even have a long chain of counters depending on the situation.
Magic Combat
1:General- The use of magic is allowed here in Avalon and there is a whole nifty little set up to allow you to figure out how it works from recognized elements to what is weak and strong against what and so forth.
2:Prepping- Whenever using a spell, it usually requires charging. Or as Furcadians know it, prepping. This is where you show in your posts that your character is getting ready to launch a spell of some kind at your opponent. Yeah sure it gives them a warning so they can think up possible ways to avoid it but hey. A spell that that possesses the ability to alter the surrounding landscape isn't exactly something that can be fired off at the snap of a finger now is it?
3:Releasing- People have different ways of judging when their character is going to release a spell. In the case of Avalon, your final prep post is when your spell is classified as released. So when your prep gauge, as I'm gonna call it, reads [4/4] [2/2] or whatever, that's the post your spell is released.
4:Prep Gauge- When prepping a spell, here in Avalon we ask that each prep post includes a, as I'm calling it, Prep Gauge. What the prep gauge is is a little mark at the end of your posts that shows how far along a spell is from being ready to fire off. It will look like [x/x] where the first x represents which number prep post your on and the second x represents how many posts it is you need till you fire it off. This also doubles as a way to show how powerful the spell can be so I don't wanna see no [1/2] crap for a spell that destroys an entire castle or something of that sort. Some spells get stronger based on how long you charge them. In the case of spells like that your prep gauge can look like [2/x] to show it's one that can be released whenever you feel like releasing it.
5:Quick Firing- Quick firing spells, which are spells that are fired off in one post thus nullifying the need of a prep gauge, are allowed in Avalon but just like anything that is done quicker than normal, it's not going to be anywhere near as effective as it would be if you took the time to charge it. With that said, I say simply that I don't want to see any spells that have the capacity to destroy entire castles actually destroying entire castles in one post.
6:Blocking/Canceling Out/Countering: Blocking and canceling out spells can be done in a variety of ways. Rather it be specially crafted armor or whatever. In the case of using a spell to block a spell, that all depends on strength and weaknesses of the elements. For instance if your using a wind element spell to block a wind element spell, their the same element so if you use a weaker one, the most it'll do will be deter it if it isn't completely overridden itself. A spell of equal strength can fully block/cancel out a spell of the same element and a stronger spell of the same element will completely overtake and counter another spell of the same element.
7:Necromancy Etc- There are other aspects of magic that aren't necessarily classified as elements. But to simplify things, these aspects of magic will be divided among the regular physical elements. These will be explained in the Magic tables.
Training
1:How To- The training system we use here in Avalon is actually quite simple and is the only bit of Avalon that requires dice rolling. Obviously whenever someone learns something new they train themselves to use it. So this training system is to aid in maintaining a sense of realism as well as preventing people from doing some kind of train once, mastered a high powered technique thing. And here's how it works.
- Step One- Roll 1D20. If your roll lands in the the success area for the level of training your technique is currently at, it goes to the next level.
- Step 2- There are 5 training levels you work through before a technique is mastered. When training a new technique, you will always start at level one regardless of how your character got the idea for it.
- Step 3- You can use a technique your training in when in combat and what not and it count towards your training it so whenever you use one, make sure you always roll them dice.
- Step 4- Whenever you make a roll, check the result against the roll success chart to see if you succeeded. You can go back and edit your post to word it accordingly. As for when you roll, you roll during your first initial post. You can word any post thereafter to indicate the techniques success or failure so long as you do it before releasing. For example, if you fail a roll, and your spell is a 5 prep spell, you can show it's failure at post 3 or 5 or whenever. Whenever a spell fails, it is going to be a negative effect. Something like the spell exploding in their face, dispelling itself due to lack of energy or it fires but just kinda bounces off of a target. Something like that.
- Step 5- The roll success chart mentioned several times can be found on Avalons Magic page. Even though it's located on the magic page, the above steps apply to training both new spells and physical techniques.
You can have more than one spell that your training in at a time.
2:Mastery- Aside from spell and technique mastery there also exists elemental mastery. This mastery is done on a scale of 1 to 10 and is done simply by mastering spells of the different elements. It works simply as such. For every 2 spells you master of an element, you gain 1 mastery level on that element. This means you need 20 spells of one element to fully master it.
Joining
1:Pre-Read- Prior to joining Avalon, we ask that you have read all the rules. As insurance that you have read them all, you will be quizzed on them in some way on the application. You may also randomly be quizzed at anytime during your membership in Avalon.
2:Age- Due to the fact that there exists a high chance of gore, sexuality and drug references and language in Avalon, we ask that anyone asking to apply be at least 15 years of age OOC and the characters they are joining with being at least 16 or be 'Accompanied by an adult'.
3:Application- To get to the application to join Avalon, simply look at the top of the screen. You'll see a link that says Join Avalon. Click on it and it will take you to the application.
Joining The Team
1:Knowledge of Rules- In order to become a moderator of Avalon, you will be asked to have a fair knowledge of the rules. Not memorized but at least known well enough where you can deliver a prompt answer or judgement on a situation based on what the rules state.
2:Unbiased Judgment- I understand the fact that people become friends and as a result it makes for making choices as it pertains to punishment and such hard or unfair. Especially when all parties involved are friends of the decision maker. We do ask in Avalon that if you wish to be a moderator, you try your best to be unbiased in decisions you make. If you feel you can't handle that pressure and responsibility, then simply don't bother applying for a position.
3:Willful Power Leeching- This is the act of willfully allowing a non-staff member to use your power. Any staff member caught doing this will be released from their position immediately.
4:Fake Staff- Let it be known now that if anyone who is not a staff member of Avalon tries to pose as one will face punishment. If you have put in an application to join the staff, this does not give you the permission to act as though you are one. - Gods, Deities, Etc: This will be covered a bit more in the character creation section but portraying a character who is a god or deity of some form is fine but this will not make them an exception to any rules. If you think that or do it, that makes it where your Godmodding.
