This group has been archived by its founder. It may still be viewed, but can no longer be joined or posted to.

Toasty wrote up a lovely blurb on this new species for our Urban Legends page, but you'll find detailed, expanded information below. These fish folk are an open species, but if played within the NV continuity, they must follow the guidelines below. Anyone can make one! You do not have to buy a design from myself or anyone else in order to create a character. Just do your research, and have fun.

Quote:
Deep in the bayous, mysterious creatures have long been hidden away from the eyes of man. Notorious in rumour, strange in truth, these creatures have only recently begun to attract the attention of those in the bigger city.

The Poisson-Garou, colloquially known as the Nightmare Fish, has been haunting the bayous for generations. Often considered the culprit behind near drownings (especially of children), these creatures are viewed by fear and suspicion by many. The few concrete facts truly known about these creatures have been collected, and will be listed below.

  • They are comparable in height and weight to humans
  • Their senses appear to be keen enough to track fleeing prey both on land and in water
  • They appear to be able to breathe air just as easily as they breathe water
  • A slimy secretion coats their bodies, making them especially difficult to get a hold of
  • They have been known to steal fish from local fishermen. Some also report the fish monsters have stolen their beer.

It's been claimed that those who suffer a Nightmare Fish's attack will have nightmares about them for one hundred and one nights. The nightmares grow increasingly terrifying over the months, and have been said to grow into hallucinations if the sufferer tries to avoid sleep.

Legend Created by Corvus & Toasty

The Poisson-Garou have two forms, one natural and one humanoid.
This is not an illusion or a fae-gifted glamour, but a physiological shift.
Because of this, some monstrous traits will linger as a 'tell,' although
they can be hidden with consistent effort and attention to detail.

Natural Form

  • Scaled from head to toe
  • May develop head and facial hair that grows from under the scales
  • Patterns an certain physical attributes are based on mundane fish
  • Humanoid lungs are present in addition to functioning gills
  • Saltwater Poisson-Garou cannot breathe in freshwater, and vice versa
  • Toes and fingers have webbing that extends to the second knuckle
  • They have fins on their forearms, thighs, calves, and back
  • Certain breeds may also have whiskers or additional fins
  • Certain breeds may have a tail, but this is extremely rare
  • Ears are present internally, covered with a membrane
  • The mouth runs the width of most of the face, and jaws are strong
  • Some are herbivores, some are carnivores. Structure of the teeth matches dietary needs accordingly.
  • The species has very little sexual dimorphism. Facial hair can present in either sex.
  • Genitals are internal. For males, they function like lizards - hidden unless in use. They do not have breasts or nipples (sorry).
  • Following mating, females will lay 1-3 eggs in water. Coloration and appearance vary by breed.
  • All breeds are slender in build, but they can vary in height from 4'-7' when fully grown.
  • In their natural state, the are covered with a thin layer of slimy, toxic secretion which can cause vivid hallucinations and nightmares pursuant to contact. Poisson-Garou are naturally immune to this.

Humanoid form

  • As with their natural form, neither sex will have breasts, nipples, or external genitals
  • The cannot interbreed with other species, even in humanoid form. (Sex, sure, but hybrids can't happen.)
  • Skin is clammy and has a slight rubbery texture
  • Some markings from their natural form will transfer over onto their skin
  • Natural hair color will persist, but this can be dyed (swimming will strip the dye faster)
  • Natural eye color will persist
  • The nightmare toxin is absent
  • Gills are absent
  • Humanoid ears are present
  • Their size and build is consistent with their natural form
