Ever think much about why your villain is a villain? Do they have a particular reason, or are they just crazy? If they're just crazy - are you doing the crazy "right"?

I've always had an explanation for why Taryn likes to hurt people - in essence, she has the intelligence of an adult, but the emotional maturity of a baby. (To be fair, despite appearances, she is, like, only actually 2 years old.) She is selfish, entirely devoid of empathy, and incapable of complex feelings like love and friendship. She doesn't set out to annoy or hurt people; she is merely trying to entertain herself.

With Gregor, on the other hand, I only recently realized that the way I've set him up is pretty much a textbook sociopath. (Mind you, sociopathy does not necessarily mean evil; "evil" is just easier for them than for most.) I've got a fondness for psychology and have been looking closer at sociopathy and similar things lately (in part because one of my cousins apparently has several similar conditions), and while I had no particular mental issue in mind, it's all there: deceptive, charming (toward strangers), egotistical, highly intelligent, lacking in remorse or empathy, driven toward violence... I suppose it shouldn't really be a surprise, but I still hadn't expected it to work out that way.
The reason why Feldar Verdince is evil is quite a story. In fact you may even say that this story has many twists and turns that make it unique.

The story begins here where Feldar Verdince is younger and a part of the Templar Order. The Templar Order is known to worship the Gods which people had forgotten about. It is said that the gods had abandoned man kind and in return they had forgot about them. The Templar Order is some of the few individuals who hadn't forgotten or given up with faith.

Feldar had been a higher official within the Templar Order. Eventually even the Templar Order had begun to spread outwards in their "faith". Through a turn of events the Templar Order ran into strange occurrence. During the time that the men were on their search, a parallel series of events was occurring that opened the opportunity for what happened next.

The world opened up and allowed these men to traverse onto Purgatory's land. Through further exploration of this new land the men came across a man who claimed to rule the land as a Lord. This man never gave a name but it was clear he was that of God like power. This part of the Templar Order broke apart from their original faith to help this man.

The Lord of this land was that of a God to them that restored their faith. In return the man granted them powers from his realm which gave them strength. This was the Dawn of the Harvesters of Souls, which would soon become strong warriors of Purgatory. These individuals soon became imbued with the power of souls and their energy. The Harvesters of Souls used these energies as a source for their great power. Soon these men became corrupted under this new power. The corruption didn't spread through them all. But instead split the group into two separate kinds of people.

You had the Soul Shapers who claimed souls by normal means and you had the Harvesters of Souls who killed for a thirst of more power. The Soul Shapers were out numbered at first before the men turned on one another as well. Unfortunately the souls the Harvesters of Souls carried became corrupted as well. Making them unable to be used by any other people but themselves.

Among the Harvesters of Souls was Feldar Verdince who claimed many souls by deeds of murder and theft. Unfortunately as time passed eventually Feldar was killed by a certain individual. This death had caused a very strange incident to occur which was a fluke. Feldar Verdince was immediately resurrected from death within a few hours. The Corrupted Souls he harvested had mixed with his own personal soul. The corruption spreading throughout his entire being. This strange event managed to resurrect Feldar from his eternal prison of death. Upon returning Feldar had lost all emotions and couldn't feel anything emotionally anymore. Along with this resurrection his body changed entirely. His skin color became pale the color of death, his eyes became a Deep cold scarlet and even his size changed.

Eventually Feldar figured out that through misfortune of others he could develop his own feelings. This began to lead Feldar down a path of evil to make himself feel alive again. The path he went down was entirely different and changed from his original Path as a Templar. Instead of being driven by his father now Feldar was driven by the desire to feel alive and cause misfortune.

Throughout the years of Feldar spreading misfortune, He eventually discovered a very unique trait. Within his own dreams he begun to only have lucid dreams. Inside of these dreams Feldar began to realize that he was indeed the reason he was having lucid dreaming. The corruption of his soul had pulled him back from a realm beyond this one. Upon returning from that realm he had taken a certain trait along with it. It seemed that Feldar had developed the rare magic of the Dreams.

Over years Feldar pushed this power and developed it quickly. He soon began to push this power to influence the dreams of others. This seemed to cause misfortune as he manipulated Dreams into nightmares. This was the way Feldar began to stimulate his emotions at a reasonable level. Soon enough as time passed Feldar had begun to enter people's dreams and summon their worst fears into reality. He finally surpassed the point of just controlling the magic and he pushed himself into the realm of Dreams.

From this point on Feldar pressed forward through the dream realm. He eventually took over the Nightmare Realm and took over the land. With these actions Feldar Verdince earned the title of "The Manifestation of Fear". He gave up his last bit of mortality and became what was known as a nightmare being.

(Hopefully you enjoyed reading about Feldar Verdince. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. I enjoy elaborating on my characters.)
Charlie Shepherd's 'evil' is mostly fueled by his determination. At the start he wasn't willing to kill people but that slowly changed over a period of time. He killed people he needed out of the way.
All that stopped when he met Susan Williams. She was someone who actually liked him, of course she still doesn't know everything about Charlie. All the murder stopped as he was content with what he got. They had a boy, called Jack. Years later however, Susan and Charlie stopped getting along and started getting into arguments. They divorced which would lead to his return to violence, sex and drugs. The only person that he likes now his his son, he doesn't like anyone else. Overall, everything that makes him how he is, is his determination to get what he wants, and keep what he wants.
Old post, I know.. sorry!

What makes Cathziel evil?

Ambition, and a blatant disregard for the lives of others.

I don't think she would necessarily describe herself as evil.

Ok, perhaps she would, she's done some heinous things, but only because they needed to be done in order to serve a greater purpose. After all, in order to get up in life you have to step on a few heads.

Beyond that, her personality is flawed. She is vengeful to a fault, and when one grows up utterly powerless, sometimes the only way pleasure can be felt is when you take it from someone else. After all, the weaker they are, the stronger you become.

But remember that evil is not always senseless, evil can be calculating, evil can be quiet, evil can appear to play nice. The evil knight might help the old lady to cross the street.. but only so that he can find out where she lives in order to steal all her stuff later.

But generally the evil character is always ego centric; whether they are blindly selfish, perverse, or believe they must commit some kind of atrocity for the greater good, their desires trump all.
After his experiences which resulted in his mind fracturing into two different personas, Vastator submitted to sheer nihilism. In the beginning, he felt the only way to cleanse all worlds of hopelessness and despair was to eradicate such things and war, bloodshed, deception, those sorts of things. However, it wasn't long after this that his motivations mutated into simply a belief that there's no reason for any of it to exist at all, thus spurring on his insatiable desire to destroy. Now he (or rather his less-than-savory side) simply wants to see everything gone forever, and there's no force in existence or no that can make him change his mind. This sort of outlook, of course, means that he sees little to no value in anything that wouldn't assist him in his efforts to wipe it all away, meaning he's quite prone to inflicting unimaginable atrocities on others for his own entertainment; he can understand that these acts are wrong, but he cares not for this understanding as he doesn't see any reason to not be horrid to the people he sees no value in.
The reason Lucifer is evil?

Hmm....

Lucifer isn't evil....more....power mad and unable to realise the human concept of mortality...

Lucifer doesn't act out of sadistic intent most of the time nor does he do bad things for fun, he does these things because this is his self assignment, he is the founder and Elder Grand-Master of the Council Of Fate, he attempts to guide the human race upon varies paths, the main three being: Destruction, Neutrality and Prosperity.

Lucifer leads humans down a worker path depending on how many sins they commit, he is currently set firmly in Destruction, he is constantly appearing with his legions to massacre humans, he eventually wants to unleash a 'Order Crystal' into the Earth's crust, which will crystallize the plants crust within a few years and make Earth inhospitable
