  • THE PURGATORY HOUNDS
The Reaper Hound; The Ethereal Hound; The Ghost Dog

    ZPBp76R.png

The purgatory hounds are essentially souls of purgatory that appear as 'loyal-hounds', otherwise known as servants of purgatory, set out to fulfill the wants and needs of their soul-bound prison so as to cleanse their soul of all past sin. This is known as a cleansing period. To fulfill their purpose and pass-on into the afterlife, they must complete tasks assigned to them by purgatory until their cleansing period is finished, only after will they undergo judgement made by more powerful entities than themselves. These entities comprise all completed or past deeds of a single purgatory hound preformed during their fanciful cleansing-period for thorough judgement. This particular event will call for a decision which will determine where the soul will reside in permanence, weighing whether or not the soul is worthy of eternal happiness or eternal damnation.

Comparatively, it is their household appearance that purgatory hounds claim many nicknames: such as the Ethereal Hound, 'Reaper Hound,' and even 'Ghost Dog,' one of those in particular being inspired by obvious relations--in terms of work and purpose--to the Grimreaper.

Purgatory hounds are tasked with the responsibility of guiding--or chasing--lost souls shortly after death to their proper place in purgatory where those lost souls, not unlike the hounds, will be tasked with servitude to purgatory be it one form or another until their cleanse period is finished. Purgatory hounds are expected to do this for as many times as is required of them while during the duration of their assigned cleansing period.

They find those who have denied their summon to light or to darkness,
They find those who resist the guidance otherwise,
The fine those who are trapped, lost, or bound,
They find those with no place to go.

Some purgatory hounds can be fended off by passing spirits, usually dark and riddled with anger, or unnaturally resistant, as well as--and more rarely--powerful supernatural beings. However, in denying ferry from a purgatory hound the soul is shackled to their place of passing. This often curses the soil where lay at rest their very corpse and is the result of restless souls and dark entities, often described to haunt houses and the like.

Since purgatory hounds are ethereal, they are considered to be low-class entities and can easily be destroyed by those with the power to interact with the supernatural, they are especially susceptible to divine or demonic powers, although their lower-class status makes them less target-worthy. It is not often a purgatory hound dies without purpose or cause outside purgatory itself.
They are not hellhounds, they do not originate from hell nor do they ferry souls to hell.

The answer to this is no. Purgatory hounds do not require sustenance. They do not require sleep. They do not require anything beyond the eventual return to purgatory.

However, they are expected to eat/consume/rid any trail of ethereal essence left by souls bound to the human plane. It is especially important that purgatory hounds consume the essence of a newly passed corpse, as this prevents the possibility of a lingering soul, or a demon possession, eliminating all opportunity of gaining access of a body after it's deceased.

Purgatory Hounds--from purgatory--often resemble whimsical and ghostly canines, however the breed of said purgatory hound often varies from any of Earth's purebred canines. It usually shows face in form of a large dog with long, wispy hair. In this ethereal form the hounds appear as a transparent-white color but in actuality can be found in an array of pastel. It is only just before a person's death that purgatory hounds can be seen by the human eye, appearing as black dogs.

It's been said that a person fated for death can spot the black dog the morning just before their death. However, only people with clairvoyance will take immediate notice before then.

Purgatory Hounds | Plague Dogs | Mongrels & Zombie Dogs

While there are many different breeds of purgatory hounds, there are three types that do not originate, or even reside from purgatory, but are instead Earth Bound Creations. It's important to understand the origins of where these subgroups come from.

The past is key to the present.

    The Purgatory Hounds

    - with origins specific to purgatory, consist primarily of a single person's soul transformed. Since purgatory acts as a midway point, a place of cleansing, and test of truth, there is only so much space for the undecided, purposeless, and deceased to venture. In saying as much, purgatory is not forever. Souls eventually find a place of rest. Only select souls are chosen to become purgatory hounds as many are assigned different tasks to complete during their cycle of cleansing. Their appearance explains their various nicknames.

True Purgatory Hound are strictly ethereal. They do not require things like food, sleep, sunlight, or general social interactions. They also cannot change shape until returned to purgatory. They are but ghosts. However, sometimes they appear as black dogs to those with clairvoyance. more info here...

    The Plague Dog

    - is the product of a deceased human-being whose soul merged with that of a purgatory hound, forming what's known as a mutt.

WAIT, WHAT? When a person is dying, or recently deceased and a purgatory hound is sent to retrieve them, should the person return to life by way of modern technology or miracle, the return of the soul to the body sucks in the purgatory hound with it, merging the two souls into one. OH OKAY.

A plague dog is still human, however, but with the added benefit of two souls and a twisted change whenever someone dies nearby. This type of purgatory hound requires all the necessity of human life in order to survive, and in fact the newly made plague dog still remains quite human. It is only when the dead linger, or pose some sort of threat, that a plague dog is trigged, taking on a near-demonic canine appearance, physical and capable of very real damage. The plague dog will still seek to fulfill the same duties as had been previously given to the merged purgatory hound inside of them.

The change or transformation can sometimes be violent.

Plague dogs are by any and all means, rogue purgatory hounds, since they cannot be controlled directly by purgatory. They are sill independent, despite being overcome by instinct. However, due to the strength of these instincts, they are often under cautious watch and are required to communicate regularly with a guide from purgatory, sent to watch over them. So long as they contribute their purpose to the benefit of purgatory and do minimal damage, they are quite often permitted to remain in existence.

NOTE It is not unusual for plague dogs to form packs which they as alpha oversee and rule, thriving while others obey under their command in order to fulfill this tameless desire to ferry the dead back to purgatory (which they can also venture in plague dog form). Like how birds migrating south for winter, a plague dog simply knows what to do and how to act when the time arrives. more info here...

    Tainted Mongrels

    - are humans bitten by an unmonitored plague dog, infected successfully and enduring through the first transformation into a tainted mongrel with ease. Some infected humans will die from the bite, some will not. A tainted mongrel carries only one-third of the virus and although the instincts are less influential than that of a plague dog, they are still very prone to following an alpha-like figure or leader insight. In essence, it's a very mild form of lycanthropy with half the violence and less need or desire for flesh--or in this case, to ferry the dead. more info here...

    Zombie Dogs

    - are humans bitten by plague dogs that remain unstable after the bite, in essence, a zombie dog is a tainted mongrel that failed to take the virus and maintain a balance within, loosing things like sanity and general motor-skills. The host body undergoes a violent transformation back into a purgatory hound but without the conscience to function regularly. They are unpredictable and somewhat schizophrenic. Their soul has essentially shattered and thus creates an abomination of unstable man and unstable dog, which proves the zombie dog to be more of a threat than any of the other three purgatory hound types. They are usually killed either by their creator, or a hunter of the supernatural when too wild or too strong to diminish immediately. They unlike tainted mongrels, can infect people with incurable disease and thusly are very dangerous. more info here...
