The oldest known Struth, Apteribis is a sage, telling the oral history of his people. In the Epic Week 2023 research library, we do not actually have any letters penned by Apteribis himself. However, most of the correspondence we do have to study is addressed to Apteribis (sent to him by Moa or Sylviornis, perhaps suggesting that Apteribis was the one who gave these materials to us.
Struth whose eggs have a special sheen on them before they hatch are said to live much longer, and Struth oral history holds that Apteribis’ egg was exceptionally shiny and beautiful.
He also seems to have tried to create some community spaces for the Struth diaspora, counseling them, holding dinners for them, etc. He even continued to reach out to Moa and try to invite her to be part of those community moments despite her angry letter to him, remaining patient and consistent enough that eventually Moa and Apteribis appear to have become good friends.
Despite the initial strained start of their relationship, Apteribis appears to have given Moa the space that she gruffly demanded. Moa admits that "I was in pain and I lashed out at you, and you had the courtesy never to bring it up or ask me to apologize for all these years. I’m sorry for the things that I said to you" after Apteribis steps in and handles the details of Viti's funeral (Moa's husband) for her when she couldn't face doing it. After this they become frequent pen-pals.
Apteribis and Moa remained in contact for close to 100 years (and counting?) eventually becoming friends. Moa rarely accepted his invitations to join him for dinner or other community events, feeling that she had an obligation to continue her adventures to try and find a way back to the Struth Isle, but she still wrote to him regularly.
Apteribis was the one who alerted Moa to the fact that 3 Struth eggs had hatched on the mainland in 1936, pulling her back from the brink of despair and giving her new focus on saving the Struth.
Over time, as Moa started to show signs of aging, he began expressing concern to Moa that she might want to pull back on adventuring for her own safety. Moa rebuffed him, but in a good-natured way.
When Moa formed her plan to retake the Struth Isle using a walrus army, Apteribis was doubtful of the plan, but insisted that if she was determined to do it, she would absolutely have to accept help. Moa resisted, but after years of Apteribis being firm with her, relented and allowed Apteribis to appoint Sylviornis as her general.
Age
Apteribis took part in an 1865 study about why some Struth are so much more long-lived than others. At the time of the study, he was (at least) 300 years old, which would make him (at least) 458 in 2023. You can see in renderings of him that he looks closer in age to Sylviornis (who was 24 in 2023) than he does Moa. Moa, who must have been over 100 in 2023, looks like an older woman, with visible age lines. Role after the Struth were exiled
After the Struth people lost access to the Struthian Isle in 1923, Apteribis seems to have attempted to take on a leadership/emotional support role for all of the remaining Struth. For example, he wrote letters of condolences to every Struth family whose eggs failed to hatch on the mainland each year, whether he was close to the individuals in the families or not. He seems to take on fatherly behaviors toward her, fussing over her health or lecturing her to try and get her to see what he thinks is sense. Once the plan to retake the Struthian Isle was underway, Apteribis appeared a great deal in the main plot, working directly with players to explain the history of the isle and what needed to be done with the prisms to restore them.Trivia
